A reboot of Red Sonja spent nearly fifteen years in development hell before going into production in 2022 with director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) at the helm. Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Matilda Lutz ended up starring in the film, and while we still don’t know when we’ll get to see her version of the title character in action, a set pic has just arrived online to give us a look at a blood spattered Lutz wearing a version of the character’s iconic bikini armor. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Today The Hollywood Reporter posted an interesting article about how Red Sonja was able to escape from development hell… and it basically boils down to a director’s enthusiasm for the material and a producer’s desperation to get the movie made.

A new exciting chapter in the Stan Lee's Alliances universe has been launched, as acclaimed creators Luke Lieberman, Ryan Silbert, Bill Sienkiewicz, and Szymon Kudranski partner up with Dynamite for Alliances: Orphans, an original graphic novel that expands the sci-fi setting co-created by the late Stan Lee along with Lieberman and Silbert, after the two Audible Originals A Trick Of Light (also a Nyt Bestseller book) and A New Reality. Opening with Traitor's Revenge, a prologue co-written by Lee and drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz, Alliances: Orphans thrusts its readers into the middle of a galactic struggle for supremacy, while a ragtag band of survivors tries to keep the pieces of the universe together.
We sat down with Luke Lieberman and Ryan Silbert to discuss the Alliances universe, how this new graphic novel expands on its mythos, and what it means to them to keep a part of Stan Lee's legacy alive.

Near the end of August, it was announced that the long-awaited Red Sonja reboot was filming with M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) directing and Matilda Lutz (Revenge) taking on the lead role. In early September, we heard that Oliver Trevena (The Rising Hawk) had joined Lutz in the cast – and Trevena’s character was the only one, other than Red Sonja herself, we ever got a description of. The actor had been cast as Tr’aal, “a gladiator-type warrior who joins Sonja in her fight against an evil emperor”. Unfortunately Deadline reports that Trevena has since had to drop out of Red Sonja due to scheduling issues. They also report that Rhona Mitra of Doomsday and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is in the cast, but no details about her character have been revealed.

“Red Sonja” has found its star.
Hannah John-Kamen, best known as the villain Ghost in “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” will wield the sword of the comic book fantasy hero in Millennium Films’ long-gestating feature adaptation. Joey Soloway (“Transparent”) is directing the film, from a script by Soloway and Tasha Huo (a writer on Netflix’s upcoming “Tomb Raider” TV series).
“Hannah is a very talented actress who we’ve been following for years and she is Red Sonja,” Soloway said in a statement. “Her range, sensibilities and strength are all qualities we have been looking for and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey together.”
Created in the early 1970s by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel’s “Conan the Barbarian” comics, Red Sonja quickly became popular enough for her own spinoff series. That is certainly due in part to the character’s formidable fighting skills and forthright personality,...

The late, great Stan Lee is known for pretty much being the grandfather of comics, as he is the creator of so many of our favorite superheroes. But he had his hand in even more projects than we even knew of. One of the final projects Lee created before he passed away was Stan Lee's Alliances: A Trick of Light, an audio drama that is set to be released on Audible this June!
Read the press release below with the description of this cool story, and then watch/listen to the trailer below that. It’s pretty awesome to still be able to hear Stan Lee’s voice, hear his stories, and see him in the movies that are continuing to come out. I know they will run out at some point, but he gave us so much to look forward to even after his passing. He was such a cool guy.

Bryan Singer is in negotiations to direct “Red Sonja” for Avi Lerner’s Millennium Media, according to a spokeswoman for the producer.
The news comes three months after Singer received the directing credit for Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” despite being replaced by Dexter Fletcher during the latter stages of the shoot. Fletcher came on board to direct in December after Fox fired Singer from the project after repeated absences from the set had forced the studio to halt production.
Singer’s other directing credits include “The Usual Suspects,” “Superman Returns,” “X-Men,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” and “X-Men: Apocalypse.” He was also dropped as an executive producer on FX’s “Legion” in January in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations.
Millennium Media announced in November during the American Film Market that it was rebooting “Red Sonja” and was planning to finance and produce a new movie based on the female warrior.

Exclusive: Red Sonja has been raising her sword in comic books since the 1970s, hit the big screen in 1985 (and will again), stopped by for a visit on the late-’90s syndicated TV series Conan and was animated in 2016’s Red Sonja: Queen of Plagues. Now, finally, she’s getting her own traditional longform book, and author-songwriter Amy S. Foster has signed to write it.
Whether the bikini armor survives the transition, well, not likely.
Foster has signed a deal with Red Sonja LLC to write the first traditional book featuring the sword-and-sorcery heroine. Foundry Literary + Media, the literary and media rights agency, is shopping the project to publishers.
Foster’s The Rift Coda — the finale to her The Rift Uprising Trilogy — will be released in October by HarperCollins Voyager.

Exclusive: Millennium Films has tapped Ashley Edward Miller to pen the screenplay for Red Sonja, the feature film based on the comic book heroine from the 1970s. The female-strong project is being financed by Millennium and produced by the company along with Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon of Cinelou, Christa Campbell & Lati Grobman and Red Sonja rights holder Luke Lieberman.
Red Sonja, which Dynamite Entertainment continues to publish in comic book form today, was put into fast-track development by Avi Lerner after the success of Warner Bros’ female empowerment film Wonder Woman, which captured a new generation at the box office with a big $821.8 million worldwide gross. Red Sonja, who wields swords and sorcery, is known as the she-devil with a sword.
Miller’s most recent credits include Fox’s upcoming Big Trouble in Little China, but he began his career in television on Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda and has...

I’ve been a fan of Red Sonja for a long time, and I’ve been waiting to see the character get a new live action adaptation for years. Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in a Red Sonja film back in 1985, and there have been plans for a new film since 2008. At that time Robert Rodriguez was attached to develop it with Rose McGowan, then Simon West was going to take it on with Amber Heard in the lead role. The last year I heard, Christopher Cosmos (Game of Thrones) was hired to write a new script. There’s been no news on the project since.
Now Bleeding Cool is reporting some news from a “reliable source” that director Bryan Singer is currently developing an R-rated TV series adaptation that will bring the “She-Devil with a Sword” to life. This is one of those series that could potentially land on HBO,...

Following the release of X-Men: Apocalypse, it’s thought that Bryan Singer is going to turn his attentions to a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. However, could the filmmaker also have his sights set on a comic book TV show? Well, if a new report is to believed, he’s developing a very adult take on Red Sonja for the small screen.
The “R-Rated” TV series is apparently being developed for a network like HBO or Showtime (or possibly streaming services like Netflix and Amazon), and Red Sonja rights holder Luke Lieberman is reportedly executive producing alongside Stephen L’Heureuxm, Jason Taylor, and Singer. The director is also likely to take the helm of the pilot by the sound of it.
Red Sonja made her live-action debut back in 1985 in a movie which starred Brigette Nielson and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The character has been making her presence felt in comic books since 1975 though,...

According to Bleeding Cool, X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer is developing an R-rated (well, that'd be TV-ma) Red Sonja series for television along with rights holder Luke Lieberman and Jason Taylor, via Singer’s production company Bad Hat Harry. They don't mention which network it'll be for, but if the show is indeed going for a full-on R rating with blood, guts and sword 'n sorcery sex, then that definitely narrows it down some. HBO? Showtime? Netflix, perhaps? The character is probably best known from the 1985 movie with Brigette Nielson and Arnold Schwarzenegger, but more recently she's featured in a very successful Dynamite Entertainment comic book series, which has crossed over with Conan The Barbarian. Don't take this as gospel just yet, but if it does turn out to be on the level, who could you see playing Red Sonja on the small screen? Sound off below.

With Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian hitting cinemas in August 2011, there was plenty of speculation that a Red Sonja film would follow it up with star Rose McGowan. But then, the delays started to happen (here, here, and here).
Luke Lieberman, the writer of the series, gave an interview to comicbookresources on what’s going on with Red Sonja, plus a possible spin-off with Thulsa Doom:
“It sounds like they are lining up a new director for ‘Sonja.’ I think ‘Conan’ is hitting theaters soon, and if that proves itself in the market, it will bode well for both ‘Sonja’ and ‘Thulsa.’ On ‘Thulsa,’ we just finished the script and are looking for financing partners. Hollywood is always ‘hurry up and wait.’ Using ‘Conan’ as an example, this new incarnation took more than 10 years to hit screens. Warners had it, put it through countless rewrites and directors, Warners lost it,...

Writer Luke Lieberman has revealed the details of his forthcoming miniseries Red Sonja: Wrath of the Gods from Dynamite. The series - illustrated by Walter Giovanni - sees Sonja battling the Norse gods and going head-to-head with the god of mischief Loki. "We have never done anything quite like it before, and I am not certain we will again," Lieberman told Cbr. "I wanted to take Sonja through the looking glass, beyond the borders of the Hyborian world to a place where magic is more common. High fantasy, without being hokey (more)...

Rose McGowan revealed in November that she thinks the adaptation of Red Sonja will "start filming again in maybe a year," but it looks like she and producer Robert Rodriguez will likely have to wait longer than that. In an interview with ComicBookResources, Luke Lieberman, a Red Sonja comic book writer and executive producer for the movie, revealed that the Conan reboot is shooting first.
There are a few things brewing, but it looks like they are going to shoot Conan first, in the early spring.
The Marcus Nispel-directed reboot of Conan has yet to choose its leading man, though the part is rumored to be between X2: X-Men United's Daniel Cudmore and Terminator Salvation's Arnold Schwarznegger-body double Roland Kickinger.

Fantasy heroine Red Sonja is to return in a new comic series titled Wrath Of The Gods, publisher Dynamite Entertainment has revealed. Written by Luke Lieberman and drawn by Walter Geovanni, the tale combines Robert E. Howard's Conan universe with Norse mythology, as the 'She-Devil with a Sword' teams up with Thor and Odin to do battle with Loki. "Wrath Of The Gods explores the mysteries of Sonja's past, while presenting her with the malicious threat of Loki in the present," read Dynamite's solicitation for the book. "Can Thor, the God of Thunder, and Odin, (more)...
