Amazon MGM has released the action-packed first trailer for A Working Man, which stars Jason Statham as a seemingly average, blue-collar construction site employee who happens to be a one-man wrecking crew himself.

Directed by David Ayer, A Working Man is based on the 2014 novel Levon's Trade (the film's original title) by Chuck Dixon, and follows Statham's former black ops agent attempting to lead a peaceful life working as his friend's foreman.

Despite the nostalgia factor of Robert Zemeckis‘ Here, reuniting him with Forrest Gump stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright in a multi-generational tale, its use of AI bodes for a frightening future to some.

Lisa Kudrow recently criticized the film’s use of digital de-aging to depict the cast as their characters over several time periods as “an endorsement for AI” after the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes called for efforts to regulate the technology.

“They shot it, and they could actually shoot the scene and then look at the playback of them as younger, and it’s ready for them to see,” she explained on a recent episode of the Armchair Expert podcast.

“And all I got from that was, this is an endorsement for AI and oh, my God. It’s not like, ‘Oh, it’s going to ruin everything,’ but what will be left? Forget actors, what about up-and-coming actors?...

Tom Hanks‘ new film, Here, only made $5 million at the box office during its opening weekend.

Hanks teamed up with Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis and co-star Robin Wright for the film, which follows multiple couples and families who inhabit the same home over the course of a century. Despite the all-star team and its $50 million production value, Here has failed to deliver in revenue.

According to Deadline, multiple studios originally passed on the film due to it being “a risky and difficult movie for broad audiences.” Zemeckis said former Miramax head Bill Block is to thank for Here making it to the big screen.

During the Robert Zemeckis film’s Friday premiere at AFI Fest in Los Angeles, Hanks opened up about reuniting with Wright for the century-spanning epic drama after starring together in Zemeckis’ Oscar-winning Forrest Gump (1994).

“Everybody was [saying], ‘Oh, what was it like, the reunion?’ You know what it was? It was like, ‘Hey, how you doing?'” Hanks told People.

“We just picked up right where we left off. Exclusive: In a wide open awards year, it has been surprising to see the Forrest Gump reunion Here barely get a mention on recent Oscar prediction lists and on betting websites.

Multiple distributors I’ve spoken to who have seen the ambitious Robert Zemeckis movie are fans. One told me it’s a “unique, Oscar contender”, while another said it “packs an emotional wallop and had me in tears.” Admittedly, some others I spoke to were more in the middle on it.

One of this year’s most acclaimed genre movies, director J.T. Mollner’s Strange Darling is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% score from critics and an 85% score from audiences, the film making over $3 million in relatively limited release across the past month. Even Stephen King called the thriller from Magenta Light Studios “a clever masterpiece.”

But there was a time when Strange Darling almost didn’t even get finished. After just two days of filming, production company Miramax shut down the production of the genre film!

Thankfully, Spooky Pictures producer Roy Lee stepped in to fight for the film and get it back on track, and both Lee and writer/director J.T. Moller detail those early production woes in a new chat with the podcast The Business with Kim Masters.

“It was very traumatic for me,” Mollner explains. “It took almost six years to get [Strange Darling] off the ground.

IFC Films has nabbed rights to the spy thriller Inheritance, which hails from Divergent director Neil Burger and stars Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans. IFC has set a theatrical release date of Jan. 24, 2025 for the project.

“My comedy is too dry and unsentimental for the new masters,” says Greg Mottola of his cancelled Confess, Fletch sequel.

A planned sequel to the 2022 comedy Confess, Fletch is no longer happening, its director and co-writer Greg Mottola has confirmed. Jon Hamm, who played the title role of Irwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher, was keen to return for at least one further film, and a script had been written, but a changing of executives at Miramax appears to have ended the chances of it getting made.

“Alas, the new head of Miramax, who controls the rights to all the books, shot down my sequel project,” Mottola wrote in response to a post written by critic Bilge Ebiri on Twitter/X/Muskbook. “The Fletch curse got me.”

With that response triggering messages from other users who expressed their affection for the comedy thriller, Mottola responded with some surprisingly candid insights into the sequel’s cancellation.

Fans of the Fletch franchise might need to console themselves with a steak sandwich or two.

Sony Pictures has moved up the release of TriStar’s “Here,” the upcoming drama that reunites “Forrest Gump” trio Robert Zemeckis, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, to Nov. 1.

Also starring Michelle Dockery and Paul Bettany, the film focuses on a single spot of land from the creation of Earth to the present day, eventually focusing on a couple that gets married and moves into the house that is built on that land.

“Here” was previously set for release on Nov. 15, but now has some space from two major tentpole films: Universal’s “Wicked” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II.”

The movie will now be released alongside a pair of specialty titles with Oscar potential: Focus Features’ Vatican thriller “Conclave” starring Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, and Searchlight’s Sundance acquisition “A Real Pain” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin. Unlike those films, “Here” will be a wide release.

Updated with new release date: Sony said Tuesday that it will now open Miramax’s Here, the reteam of Forrest Gump filmmaker Robert Zemeckis and its stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, on November 1. It’s the only studio theatrical release going wide on that day after Samuel Goldwyn’s Liam Neeson title Absolution, Viva’s animated Hitpig and the George Huang-directed Luke Evans movie Weekend in Taipei. There’s been no buzz that Here will land a place at the fall’s film festival troika of Toronto, Venice and Telluride.

Previously, June 21: Sony said Friday that its new film Here, reuniting the director, writer, and stars of the classic Forrest Gump, will open wide via TriStar Pictures on November 15.

Previously, the film had been scheduled for an exclusive run in Los Angeles in New York on that date, with a limited and wide release to follow on November 22 and November 27, respectively.

Veteran film producer Spencer Ela has joined Miramax’s Motion Picture Group as a senior vp.

He most recently worked at The Safran Company as a vp under DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran and producer John Rickard.

Ela arrives at Miramax months after Jonathan Glickman became CEO of the film and TV studio, replacing former CEO Bill Block, who departed last year after a six-year run.

Spencer Ela has joined Miramax’s Motion Picture Group as a senior vice president.

He arrives at Miramax by way of The Safran Company, where he served as vice president under DC Entertainment Co-Chair, Peter Safran, and producer John Rickard. During his tenure at The Safran Company, Ela co-produced Amazon Studios’ upcoming action thriller, “Heads of State,” which features John Cena, Idris Elba, Priyanka Chopra and Jack Quaid and was directed by Ilya Naishuller. In addition, Ela oversaw the development and production of DC’s “Blue Beetle,” which starred Xolo Maridueña and was directed by Angel Manuel Soto.

Ela joins Miramax shortly after the studio has undergone a major leadership change, one that saw Jonathan Glickman take over as CEO in April following the departure of the company’s previous leader, Bill Block. Glickman quickly tapped Becky Sloviter, a veteran producer and executive, as president of Miramax’s Motion Picture Group.

Robert Zemeckis is reuniting with his “Forrest Gump” stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright for another decades-spanning epic, “Here.”

This time, though, both Hanks and Wright are digitally de-aged with AI-assisted technology Metaphysic Live, which face-swaps in real time. For example, Wright was de-aged using footage from her at age 19 to be paired with her present-day performance.

“Here” is the story of a room and the events that have taken place there over the course of hundreds of thousands of years. Hanks and Wright play a couple who spend their whole adult lives in that house; the film also includes other tenants played by Paul Bettany, Kelly Reilly, Michelle Dockery, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and David Fynn.

The feature is based on Richard McGuire’s graphic novel of the same name, which was released by Pantheon Books in 2014 starting with a six-page comic strip McGuire originally published in 1989.
