Her ancestry is mainly English, with small amounts of German, Scottish and Scots-Irish/Northern Irish, and distant French and Welsh. She has also described herself as being of part Cherokee Native American ancestry. These Cherokee roots have not yet been substantiated.

Was scheduled to be in the "Transformers" movie series, but was dismissed after the second movie because of her statements comparing director Michael Bay to Napoléon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler.

Has a condition called Brachydactyly type D, which caused her to have unique-looking thumbs. Has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, for which she has been medicated since she was a child. Has also discussed her obsessive-compulsive disorder, insecurities, self-harming, and she has revealed that she has low self-esteem.

She and Brian Austin Green are supporters of Generosity Water, and have funded the creation of over 10 water wells for the organization. She also has participated into charity auctions for organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Stand Up to Cancer.

Has around 10 tattoos until now. Although she has removed the tattoo of the immortal Marilyn Monroe on her right forearm (2011). She also has replaced her ex-husband's name "Brian" with a snake winding through a bouquet of flowers on her right pelvis (2023).

On June 24, 2010, she married her boyfriend of six years Brian Austin Green following a three-year on-and-off engagement. They married in a secret wedding ceremony at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea with his son Kassius as their only witness.

At age 15, she was banned from Walmart for shoplifting (stealing cosmetics), and never came back.

Auditioned for the role of Lisa the babysitter in Michael Bay's remake The Amityville Horror (2005), which went to Rachel Nichols.

To prepare for her role as a possessed living-dead teenager in Jennifer's Body (2009), she dropped 15 lbs., bringing her weight down to a near-frail 97 lbs., and remained outside the sun for four months to keep her skin pale. Fox later said this is her favorite of her own movies.

On June 16, 2020, she and musician Colson Baker announced their relationship, several weeks after the release of Baker's song "Bloody Valentine", whose music video features Fox. On January 12, 2022, Fox announced that the two were engaged. On March 21, 2024, Fox announced their engagement was cancelled, and will no longer discuss their relationship in the media.

She returned to work seven weeks after giving birth to her son Bodhi in order to complete filming.

Her sister Kristi Branim Fox is 12 years older than her and is a high school education counselor.

She cannot ride a motorcycle during the shooting of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), so when she shot her riding scenes someone had to push her so that she could have a good start, and when shooting ended someone was always on hand to catch her motorcycle.

Returned to work seven months after giving birth to her son Noah to begin filming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014). Also returned to work eight months after giving birth to her son Bodhi to begin filming the comedy drama Zeroville (2019).

She began her dance and drama training at age five in Kingston, Tennessee. She attended a dance class at the community center there and was involved in Kingston Elementary School's chorus and the Kingston Clippers swim team. At age 10, she move to St. Petersburg, Florida where she continued her training and finished school.

Filed for divorce from Brian Austin Green on August 21, 2015, days after she and Green announced their separation. By early 2016, they were back together and she was expecting their third child. On April 19, 2019, Fox filed to dismiss her second attempt for the divorce in Los Angeles, California. On March 5, 2020, she separated from Green and filed for divorce again on the day before Thanksgiving.

On March 12, 2023, she and singer Billie Eilish attended the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar Party hosted by Radhika Jones at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, California. Fox wore a plunging black velvet dress and a dashing diamond necklace as she posed alongside Eilish.

On August 8, 2023, Fox announced the launch of her first book called "Pretty Boys Are Poisonous", a collection of her own poetry. The book was released on November 7 the same year and she revealed from there that she miscarried her pregnancy with what would have been her fourth child.
