Thunderbolts*, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's answer to the Suicide Squad, comes out on May 2. Director Jake Schreier will surely want to distance himself from those kinds of comparisons, but it’s hard not to see the similarities between the two stories. Thunderbolts* stars a rag-tag team of misunderstood antiheroes working for a shadowy organization ruled over by a badass woman. If Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) getting an expendable group of souped-up villains to do her bidding sounds similar to Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) pulling the strings in 2016’s Suicide Squad and 2021’s The Suicide Squad, that’s because it is.
Still, Schreier’s take on Thunderbolts* revamps the typical Thunderbolts lineup from Marvel Comics and gives it an MCU twist. There’s no sign of Daniel Brühl’s Helmut Zemo, nor the original comic book roster of Goliath, Beetle, Fixer, Moonstone, and Screaming Mimi. Instead, the live-action Thunderbolts...

Adapted by Fleming, the film — an Australian-French co-production — is being directed by Fred Schepisi and is described as “a tragedy, a comedy, a drama and a mystery.”
Set in the late 1980s, “Burnt Piano” revolves around a boutique bookstore owner (Cornish) who is infatuated with and would do anything to meet famed playwright Samuel Beckett (Rush), much to the chagrin of her father, a mediocre short story writer (Winstone). Theo James is the talk of the town at the moment for his new comedy-horror The Monkey, but he's also got The Gentlemen fans buzzing with his latest season 2 tease. In a new interview, the actor hinted that the upcoming season will take a darker turn while also sharing an exciting update on when filming is set to begin. While major details are still under wraps, James' comments have only fueled anticipation for what’s next in the gritty, high-stakes world of the hit Netflix series.
The crime drama series premiered on Netflix in March 2024 and was an instant hit. Due to the success of the first season, Netflix went ahead and renewed the show for a second season in August 2024. At the time of its renewal, it was revealed that the second installment would see the return of James as Eddie, Kaya Scodelario as Susie, and Daniel Ings as Freddy.

Alan Clarke’s brutally unflinching prison drama Scum is set to make its long-awaited return to digital platforms in the UK and Ireland, with Vertigo Releasing confirming a release date of 17th March. The controversial 1979 film, which remains one of the most hard-hitting portrayals of the British borstal system, stars Ray Winstone in a breakthrough performance that would cement his status as one of the country’s most formidable actors.
Originally produced as a BBC television play in 1977, Scum was banned before its intended broadcast, deemed too extreme for public consumption. Clarke and screenwriter Roy Minton refused to let their vision disappear into obscurity, reworking the film as a theatrical release in 1979. What followed was a harrowing portrayal of institutional brutality that quickly became one of the most infamous British films of its era.

The crime drama The Gentlemen, which became a hit when it premiered last year on Netflix, has left fans eagerly awaiting its next season. In August 2024, Netflix renewed the series for a second installment, and viewers are excited to see what’s in store for their favorite characters. But unfortunately, it doesn't look like the crime drama series will be returning for its second season this year. The Gentlemen was noticeably absent from Netflix's 2025 lineup, leading many to believe that its second season won't be released until 2026.
Given that the crime drama was renewed in mid-2024, it initially seemed like there would be plenty of time for the filmmaking process for The Gentlemen season 2 to make a 2025 release. However, that doesn't appear to be the case anymore. Production on The Gentlemen season 2 is reportedly set to start sometime in April this year and is expected to last for about four to eight months.

When The Substance picked up five Academy Award nominations - including Best Director - during Sunday's announcement, the usual jokes about director Coralie Fargeat immediately getting swept up in the superhero movie vacuum followed.
Now, it's come to light that the filmmaker actually did come close to accepting an offer to helm a Marvel Studios project while she was still working on the script for her surreal body-horror satire.
In Variety's piece on Fargeat's struggle to stay true to her original vision for the film despite certain Universal execs feeling that the extreme gore and nudity would make it a hard sell, it's mentioned that the director walked away from preliminary discussions to helm 2021's Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson in order to stay focused on The Substance.

Over the last decade or two, one particular trend in Hollywood has left moviegoers divided. This specific trend involves major studios electing to remake their fan-favorite films from years before. Some enjoy seeing their favorite stories be brought back to life, while others would prefer to see studios dedicating their resources to more original ideas. Regardless of where you stand on this debate, it is impossible to deny that the movie world has recently been flooded with remakes of popular films.
A major reason why so many of these remakes are happening is because they often feel like a surefire way to make a massive profit by capitalizing on a pre-existing audience. However, several recent attempts have demonstrated that success is not a guarantee. Some remakes unfortunately end up thoroughly underwhelming their audiences, failing to offer all the exciting elements that made the original films so popular, particularly when it...

The romance genre might have a reputation for telling sentimental and sweeping stories, but it's easy to forget that there are typically exciting subplots that feature additional thematic tension. This is especially true with movies that blend the best parts of adventure films into the structure of a romance movie, or vice versa. While daring chase scenes, action-packed fight sequences, and races to unearth buried treasure have enough built-in drama on their own, this can only be elevated through a romance plot. That extra layer of tension and intrigue makes for a relentlessly compelling movie that's worth rewatching.
Though many adventure films make the love story the side plot, some of these action-packed romance movies have complex relationships at the heart of the narrative. Films that tackle both love and action understand that what propels these plots forward is the character development and the dynamics between them. It's common for...

A movie version of Wicked has been a long time coming down the yellow brick road and this week’s new release still only covers the first half of the smash-hit Broadway musical. Once you’ve completed all three rounds of movie-related questions, you’ll find a link to a separate post with the correct answers at the bottom of this post. As always, this is just for fun, but please let us know how you did in the comments (scores out of 31 this week!) and give us any other lovely feedback.

Over the years, there has been more than one instance in the entertainment industry where the actors were actually asked by the filmmakers to work past their limits or go to other extreme measures just to get their roles or scenes right for the particular project. Turns out, director Darren Aronofsky is no stranger to making his actors undergo the same either.

Though he is a commendable filmmaker, Aronofsky’s works don’t come to fruition without having his actors go through a grueling process to make the project perfect. The same was the case with his 2014 film Noah as well, which had Black Widow actor Ray Winstone pretty much lose movement in his right arm because the director wanted to make the perfect biblical apocalypse film.

Beowulf is one of the foundational texts of English literature, an epic poem about a warrior named Beowulf who takes on a fearsome monster named Grendel, then Grendel's mother, and finally a mighty dragon. In 1971, author John Gardner wrote Grendel, which tells the story of Beowulf from the monster's point of view. Grendel imagines the titular character as a thoughtful, angry outcast who doesn't know how to fit into the world.
Grendel has been adapted to the screen before, but the story has resonated down through the decades and writer-director Robert D. Krzykowski is taking a crack at it for modern audiences. The new movie will feature Jeff Bridges as Grendel; Bryan Cranston as King Hrothgar, whose court Grendel harries; T Bone Burnett as the Shaper, whose music and tales drive Grendel to fits of existential madness; and Dave Bautista as Beowulf, the warrior who puts an end to Grendel's rampage.

Russell Crowes divisive epic movie Noah gets a glowing review from VFX artists 10 years after its original release. Inspired by Noahs Ark, the biblical drama follows a man (Crowe), chosen by God to construct a vessel for his family and various animals to brave an impending apocalyptic flood. Along with Crowe, the cast of Noah includes Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, and more. The film, directed by Darren Aronofsky, earned over $359 million at the box office, and though met with polarizing reactions, audiences praised the effects.

Movie studios analyze the market to figure out which movies they should bet big on, but sometimes the market throws up some surprises, and sure-fire hits turn into box office bombs. Movies with great casts, big franchise recognition and exciting ideas can still end up falling short of expectations. In the most extreme cases, this can have knock-on effects which force studios to scrap other movies or shut down entirely.
Even huge franchises like Star Wars and the MCU aren't immune to the odd box office bomb. These are often among the most costly flops, since they have such big budgets and marketing costs. Some box office bombs can salvage their reputations, but money talks in the movie industry. One big misfire can cause financial chaos for the studios involved, even if it looked as if the odds were in their favor.

The trouble with Thunderbolts* is that this is a superhero team made up almost entirely of all those Marvel characters you had completely forgotten existed. Not the cool ones who get their own Funko Pops. We’re talking about the B-team – the backup Avengers. The ones who showed up to the superhero cookout but left before anyone got to taste the chimichangas.
It’s not that Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and David Harbour’s Red Guardian are boring, per se. Their spiky father-daughter banter was the highlight of 2021’s Black Widow. But if they had never turned up again in a Marvel movie – and that would have been a pity – it’s quite possible nobody would have ever noticed.

Earlier this year, we got word that a new live-action take on the tale of Beowulf is in development with an all-star cast on board. We've seen a number of animated and live-action adaptations of the ancient Danish legend over the years, but this one will be a little different.

James McAvoy has revealed that his uber-masculine villain character in the upcoming film, Speak No Evil, was partially inspired by Andrew Tate.

James McAvoy is no stranger to the psychological thriller genre. The actor surprised fans with his skills playing multiple characters in M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and then reprised his role as the Did-diagnosed Kevin in the sequel, Glass. The actor will be seen in the upcoming thriller Speak No Evil, where he plays a murdering doctor.
McAvoy reportedly based his character, Paddy, off of controversial Internet personality Andrew Tate. The X-Men star mentioned that Paddy had touches of toxic masculinity in him and much of his interactions were based on that ideology. However, he did mention that he was more polite than Tate.

Netflix has renewed Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen for a second season.
Ritchie, who set the TV show in the world of Miramax’s film of the same name, will return to direct the series, while Theo James, Kaya Scodelario and Daniel Ings will reprise their starring roles. Additional casting for the second season hasn’t yet been announced.
The first season of The Gentlemen introduced James as Eddie Horniman as he unexpectedly became the new Duke of Halstead after inheriting his father’s sizable country estate. The snag is that the aristocratic pile came with an illegal weed farm run by ruthless Susie (Scodelario) and her crime boss father Bobby Glass, played by Ray Winstone.
Horniman became a reluctant yet genteel gangster and an ally of Susie as they faced down rival and hilarious gangster families in an equally back- and front-stabbing business world. The second season, to be...

In his review for season one, our own Alex Maidy said, “The Gentlemen series feels like a reimagining of the film. The story hits some vaguely similar notes but the vast majority is completely different. […] This is a unique reimagining of a successful story that takes it in a different direction and sets up future seasons.”
Netflix U.K.’s VP spoke ecstatically about the show’s successful first season, “With its gun-toting chickens and drug-dealing Dukes, The Gentlemen was a huge hit with audiences in 2024. Not really a surprise as Guy Ritchie remains one of the industry’s most iconic creators telling authentically British stories with his signature swagger, grit and wit. From Olivia Colman’s fraught sojourn to the Greek Isles in The Lost Daughter to Jessie Buckley’s terrifying trip up the M5 to the English countryside in Men and M. Night’s bummer beaches in Old, taking a little “me time” away from home is often the single biggest mistake any movie character could possibly make. Horror, psychological drama, comedy, mystery, rom-com. The genre hardly matters. In film, the simple act of taking a vacation is rarely the relaxing, restorative interlude one hopes that it might be, placing uneasy personalities in uncertain—even harrowing—circumstances.
So with another holiday weekend upon us and the summer theoretically in full swing, it’s time to make peace with travel advisories being a moving target and hot spots foreign and domestic getting hotter by the minute. No surprise then, that many of us now eye these “escapes” with more than a little bit of skepticism.

Archery expert Jim Kent critiques Taskmaster's unrealistic arrow technique in Black Widow. Taskmaster's return in Thunderbolts offers potential for redemption and better fight choreography. Realistic combat understanding could improve MCU scenes, with Thunderbolts learning from Black Widow's criticism.
A new video from an archery expert has taken Taskmaster to task after her appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Black Widow. Jim Kent, a traditional archer, was featured in a Business Insider video where he critiqued the accuracy of several archers in movies and television, rating each clip and provided commentary on technique and realism within the scene. With the McU's movie roster being a cornerstone of recent action movies, Black Widow's Taskmaster was featured in this video, shown firing exploding arrows during a city chase. Interestingly, this part of the MCU timeline scored relatively low.
On YouTube, Kent gave the scene a score of 4 out of 10, noting that "bows don't do that.

Millie Bobby Brown's success in Enola Holmes and Damsel make a Stranger Things spinoff unlikely. Brown's busy career and upcoming projects suggest she is ready to move on from Eleven. A follow-up centered around Eleven may not be necessary as her story in Stranger Things is nearing its end.
Although a Stranger Things sequel that focuses on Eleven might sound fun, Millie Bobby Browns big Netflix career successes explain why this is so unlikely. The upcoming Stranger Things season 5 will bring the Netflix hit to an end after nine years when the outing arrives in 2025. Dave Bautista and Jeff Bridges lead a stacked cast which will flip the Beowulf story and presumably also feature a puppet or two in the mix.
Here’s a fine story to kick off the week. The legendary Jim Henson Company is set to make Grendel, a live action version of Beowulf, the epic tale of heroes, monsters and the clashes between them.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Palisades Park Pictures is launching sales for the project at the upcoming Cannes marketplace. Kaya Scodelario suggests season 2 of The Gentlemen can explore a new country, going beyond the UK setting. Season 2 could involve more business dealings for Eddie and Susie, showing the Glass family's empire expanding to overseas locations like Spain, France, or the United States. Remaking a 2002 Hong Kong hit and setting the story in Irish-Catholic Boston, Martin Scorsese seemed to be out of his element with The Departed—if not, that is, for the fact that the film marked a return to the director’s bread-and-butter mean streets, and that his source material, Wai Keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak’s Infernal Affairs, was itself heavily influenced by his iconic gangster films. Something of a genre homecoming after recent detours into the arenas of the historical epic (Gangs of New York) and the period biopic (The Aviator), The Departed again found him trawling a gritty, brutal urban underbelly where racial epithets spit from roughnecks’ mouths, class divisions are as sharp as a switchblade, and allegiances to others and one’s self are always tenuous at best.

While Steven Spielberg might hail superhero movies as Oscar-worthy, the likes of Martin Scorsese and Anthony Hopkins have gone on to criticize Marvel and DC flicks and even deemed them not cinema-worthy. Although each actor has a right to have their own opinions regarding different genres of cinema, fans have disliked how big names in Hollywood have time and again belittled superhero flicks and the actors who work in them.

Over the years, fans have waged war against such opinions, and comic book actors have defended such movies. And now, even Walton Goggins has joined them after Ray Winstone recently called out the excessive use of green screens in superhero flicks.

Add Kristen Stewart to the list of actors you won’t see in a Marvel movie anytime soon.
“I will likely never do a Marvel movie … it sounds like a f*cking nightmare, actually,” Stewart said Tuesday on the Not Skinny, But Not Fat podcast. She is not alone.
Last Month, Ray Winstone said he almost quit Marvel’s Black Widow because it was such a hassle.
“It was fine until you have to do the reshoots,” said Winstone. “Then you find out that a few producers have come down, and your performance is too much, it’s too strong…That’s the way Marvel works. It can be soul-destroying, because you feel like you’re doing great work.”
Nicolas Cage also recently expressed his reluctance to return to comic-book fare.
“Would I return to the comic book genre?” Cage asked himself earlier this month. He answered with a lukewarm,...
