Russell T Davies has been a key figure in the Whoniverse since the show's revival in 2005. And while he might be back for the franchise's new era at Disney, he admits that his tenure is far from permanent. There are already conversations happening behind the scenes about who will take the reins when his time is up.
Doctor Who is going pretty steady at the moment. After a few years away from the show, Russell T Davies returned to the helm to usher in the latest Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, along with a new and rejuvenated story. The Whoniverse is now being made with Disney cash, meaning a bigger budget and exposure to the gigantic Disney+ audience.
The rebooted season 1 aired in 2024 to mixed reviews. Episodes ranged from fantastic, like "73 Yards," to downright disappointing, like "Space Babies." That said, Ncuti Gatwa's electric portrayal of the Doctor was a hugely positive takeaway.

Doctor Who's Russell T Davies has addressed plans for who will succeed him as showrunner in the future, explaining "conversations" are already underway. Davies served as the original showrunner for the sci-fi series' revival in 2005, overseeing the seasons starring Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor and David Tennant's Tenth Doctor. He returned to his role starting with the 2023 60th anniversary episodes prior to season 14, and retained his role into the upcoming Doctor Who season 15. His return to the series ushered in a new era as well, starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor.
Speaking with Tennant himself on his podcast David Tennant Does a Podcast With… (via Radio Times), Davies confirmed he would not return to Doctor Who "a third time" after his current stint as showrunner. Instead, "conversations" are already happening about who will take up the mantle when he's done, even though he doesn't plan on going anywhere anytime soon.

Even if you're a "Doctor Who" fan with just a passing knowledge of the show's massive, six-decade-plus history on the BBC, you probably know that the cult fave has some procedural aspects built in, no matter who the current Doctor is or which person is overseeing the show at a given time. In the modern era of the Doctor, there can be a season-long arc of sorts, such as the Bad Wolf arc of the first modern season with Christopher Eccleston or when the Master became Missy for Peter Capaldi. But within that arc, there tend to be episodes that take place in the far future as well as episodes in which the Doctor inevitably meddles with their latest companion's home life. And there's almost always at least one episode set in a specific past era of British history, enabling the Doctor to encounter real-life figures like Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth,...

Love it or hate it, Rotten Tomatoes is now more important than ever when it comes to whether film and TV fans decide to check out the latest releases at home or in theaters, and it's not uncommon for studios to tout scores as proudly as star ratings.
In 2015, Marvel Television and Netflix launched Daredevil. That was followed by Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and, eventually, an Avengers-inspired team-up called The Defenders. There was even a spin-off for The Punisher.
Following this week's premiere of Daredevil: Born Again, we're taking a look at how each of the shows set in his corner of the MCU compare based on their respective Rotten Tomatoes scores. This era of storytelling was something of a mixed bag and you'll likely be surprised by how these shows fared with critics.

The second season of Good Omens ended with the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) returning to heaven as the new supreme archangel charged with laying the way for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, the demon Crowley (David Tennant) remained on Earth, and just after the two of them had expressed their feelings for each. The breakup was hard for fans to watch.
Also hard to watch: Neil Gaiman, who co-wrote the original Good Omens book with Terry Pratchett, going down in flames as he was accused of sexual assault. Originally, Prime Video was going to make a third and final season of Good Omens to wrap up the story. But after the Gaiman scandal broke, production on season 3 was paused, and eventually it was reworked so that we're getting one final 90-minute episode, rather than a whole season of TV.

Jon Favreau's 2008 film "Iron Man" kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a multimedia superhero property that would remain dominant in the pop consciousness for over a decade. Initially, "Iron Man" and Louis Leterrier's own 2008 MCU movie "The Incredible Hulk" (which finally got a sequel of sorts in 2025) were meant to be mere stand-alone superhero sories, only including references to the Avengers as a cute wink to fans. But when Disney purchased the Marvel library in 2009, a grander plan was put in motion, laying out multiple films at once, each one introducing a new character. Eventually, all the superhero characters teamed up in 2012's "The Avengers," which was essentially the cinematic version of a TV season finale. That structure held fast through to "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019, the 22nd film in the franchise, and one that featured many, many superheroes.

The London TV Screenings, or London Screenings for short, the global TV industry event running Feb. 23-28, is ready for its close-up. The once low-key affair, where networks and sales outfits screen their latest shows for international buyers, has grown to can’t-miss status over the years. 2025 will be London Screenings’ time to shine, particularly without any competition from the now-defunct Mip TV.
That said, Mip will be holding its own inaugural Mip London event during the week, featuring panel discussions on industry trends, hot new properties from the likes of South Korea and Japan, as well as a session with David Beckham and Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria.
The London Screenings come at an inflection point for the global TV industry. After a sustained boom in high-end drama, networks, and streamers are again cutting costs and betting more on lower-cost non-fiction and reality shows. In the fiction arena,...

David Tennant is a good choice for most of the roles that he is chosen for, be it the malicious dragon knight in Critical Role’s The Legend of Vox Machina, The Doctor, or a muted detective in the British version of Broadchurch. However, the American remake of the show sort of made things worse by keeping Tennant as the lead, just expecting him to change his accent.

Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Toby Stephens, Alex Jennings, David Tennant, and Paapa Essiedu are just a few of the actors who have taken on the melancholy royal for the RSC.
Ben Kingsley gave his Hamlet at Stratford-upon-Avon Upon Avon in 1975. When Richard Attenborough couldn’t decide who to cast to portray Mahatma Gandhi in his epic movie Gandhi, he remembered Kingsley’s interpretation of the Dane. The rest is Academy Award history.

It’s always good to look ahead to shows and movies coming up later in the year. Netflix did that recently with their update of what's on their slate for 2025. One new movie coming up in 2025 could be the start of a beautiful deal for an author and viewers.
We aren’t quite at the scale of the Harlan Coben deal with Netflix where the author signed up to transform 14 of his books into TV series around the world. But hey, everyone has to start somewhere, and author Richard Osman could well be heading down a similar if smaller, path. Osman has four books published already in his Thursday Murder Club series and is working on a fifth book to add to that.
The first of those books, The Thursday Murder Club, gave the series its name and is currently being made into a movie. None other than Steven Spielberg...

The modern incarnation of Doctor Who has been running since 2005. That's 20 years of whimsical, very British adventures through space and time. And the series can trace its roots all the way back to 1963, meaning the show has been on for over 70 years, with some notable breaks in there; Doctor Who was pretty much off the air between 1989 and 2005, with only a TV movie to keep things going in between.
It's possible we're heading towards another break. Ratings for the most recent season — which stars Ncuti Gatwa as the titular Time Lord — have been below the expectations of Disney, which partnered with the BBC to produce the newest episodes. Disney gave the show a big cash infusion, and they want to see results.
A new season of Doctor Who once again starring Gatwa will air later this year, but there are rumors now swirling that it will mark his final outing as the lead character.

The 2025 Oscar race took a detour across the pond on Sunday as the BAFTA Film Awards were handed out, with the hometown favorite Conclave finishing on top.
Conclave came in with a leading 12 nominations, and it finished with four overall wins — Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing — on an evening when voters spread the wealth. The Brutalist scored for Best Director (Brady Corbet) and Best Actor (Adrien Brody). The Best Actress race featured a surprise, with Anora star Mikey Madison upsetting Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner Demi Moore (The Substance). It was an otherwise quiet night for Anora, with just one other win for Best Casting after a scorching weeklong stretch that saw the film rack up top prizes from the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, Producers Guild, and Writers Guild.
Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez) and Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) continued their domination of the supporting categories.

David Tennant’s opening monologue at the BAFTA Awards became the subject of attention after certain jokes were left out of the BBC’s broadcast. The comedian-host’s live performance featured several quips about former U.S. president Donald Trump that the network later chose to omit from its edited two-hour version of the show.
During his live set at London’s Royal Festival Hall, Tennant joked that it was unlikely Trump had seen “The Apprentice” because the film’s UK rating of 15 made it unsuitable for Nickelodeon. He followed with a remark comparing the repeated mention of Trump’s name to summoning a character from a well-known cult classic. These lines, along with other Trump-related material, were absent from the televised edit, though his comment linking Trump’s hair to the architecture in “The Brutalist” remained.

Some of David Tennant’s Donald Trump jokes during his BAFTAs monologue ended up on the BBC’s cutting room floor.
Several of the host’s quips — one of which compared the U.S. president to Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice character — were cut from the BBC’s broadcast of the British awards ceremony on Sunday night, which is pre-recorded two hours before it airs in the U.K. The event ran for three hours and is typically cut down to two, so it’s not out of the ordinary for certain bits to be axed.
Though Tennant’s bit about Trump in relation to “The Brutalist” was left in, it cuts off there and does not include the following: “Donald Trump, he says he hasn’t seen ‘The Apprentice’ because it’s a 15 [referring to the U.K. film rating]. It’s not on Nickelodeon. Donald Trump … I’m worried. I’ve said his name three times.

Anora star Mikey Madison paid tribute to sex workers after winning Best Leading Actress at the BAFTA Film Awards.
In the Neon film, Madison plays a sex worker from Brooklyn who meets and impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch. She beat others including Demi Moore, Cynthia Erivo, and Saoirse Ronan to the acting prize.
After picking up the BAFTA mask, she said: “I do want to just take a moment to recognize the sex worker community. I just want to say that I see you. You deserve respect and human decency. I will always be a friend and ally.”
She thanked her Mom, calling her “my favorite screen partner” for driving her to auditions and helping her run lines. Madison added: “To my fellow nominees, I’m just so in awe of all of you. You just gave beautiful performances. And really, the highlight of all of this...

The Ee BAFTA Film Awards happened this evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted once more by David Tennant.
Poking fun at Trump during his monologue, Tennant also offered the usual celebrity gags and had several stars singing part of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)".
Cautioning audience members that there would not be an intermission as with nominated epic The Brutalist, Tennant also admonished winners to "keep your speeches the opposite of your films: nice and short."
A somewhat surprising addition to the night (though perhaps not given their presence on the soundtracks for both Better Man and Anora) was a performance of "Greatest Day" by Take That.
As for the winners, it was a good night for Conclave, which won Best Film, another Adapted Screenplay trophy for writer Peter Straughan, Best British Film and Editing and A Real Pain, which went home with Original Screenplay for...
