A new take on the cult horror classic “Audition,” one of the more influential modern horror films in the torture-porn genre, is coming to the screen.
Focus Features is nearing a deal to produce a feature adaptation of “Audition” based on the 1997 horror-thriller novel by Ryū Murakami, which was originally brought to the screen by Japanese master Takashi Miike in 1999 starring Ryo Ishibashi and Eihi Shiina.
Focus will produce the project alongside Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment and Mario Kassar Productions, who have tapped Christian Tafdrup to write and direct the film. Tafdrup is the Danish director behind the original “Speak No Evil,” which was last year adapted into English by Blumhouse and Universal. Tafdrup is co-writing the script with his brother Mads Tafdrup.

A true horror classic, Takashi Miike’s Audition is impossible to scrub from your brain even 26 years after its original release, and a fresh take on the tale is now in the works.
Deadline reports today that Focus Features, Hyde Park Entertainment and Mario Kassar Productions are “nearing a deal” to produce a new adaptation of Ryū Murakami’s 1997 novel Audition, which served as the basis for Takashi Miike’s movie back in 1999.
Christian Tafdrup, who directed the original Danish version of Speak No Evil that was remade by Blumhouse last year, is co-writing the new Audition with brother Mads Tafdrup.
Executive Producers include Cineverse’s Chris McGurk and Yolanda Macias.
Ryo Ishibashi and Eihi Shiina starred in Takashi Miike’s Audition. In the Japanese horror film, “A widower takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife.

The 45th Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) will be held on March 1, 2025, to recognize the worst films of 2024. The nominees were originally set to be announced on January 16, but due to wildfires in Southern California, the announcement was delayed several times, eventually being revealed on January 21.
The nominees were chosen by 1,202 members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation, including movie fans, critics, and journalists. This year, many comic book adaptations received nominations, such as ‘The Crow,’ ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’
Several well-known actors, including Ariana DeBose, Cate Blanchett, and Joaquin Phoenix, were also mentioned, with Jon Voight getting a nod for his roles in four films. 2024 was really bad for superhero adaptations considering that the movies received eighteen nominations overall.

Meanwhile, Dakota Johnson and Lady Gaga have also been nominated for this infamous award. Scroll below for the nominations.
The first Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony was held in 1981, and to date, Sylvester Stallone is reportedly the most-awarded actor ever. He has received 12 Razzies. There are few awards shows more mean-spirited than the Razzie Awards, which each year join the awards season circus to ridicule the previous year’s most notable flops. 2024 gave the Razzies plenty of punching bags, as Joker: Folie a Deux, Megalopolis, and Madame Web were among the nominees for Worst Picture.
The other films rounding out the five Worst Picture nominees were video game adaptation Borderlands and Dennis Quaid vanity project/biopic Reagan. All five movies were also well-represented in additional categories including Worst Actor, Worst Actress and Worst Screen Combo.

As this year's awards season gets underway, Hollywood prepares to celebrate the very best - and worst - that 2024 had to offer.
The Academy Award nominations were recently delayed due to the California wildfires, but we do have the nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards, and several superhero/comic book-based movies were "honored" in a number of categories.
Not too surprisingly, Warner Bros.' Joker sequel picked up the most nominations, with stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga up for Worst Actor, Todd Phillips for Worst Director, and more. Sony Pictures' Madame Web was a close second with noms in six categories, tied with Megalopolis and Reagan.
Lionsgate's ill-fated The Crow reboot picked up two.
Nominees were chosen were via emailed ballots to 1,202 Razzie members from 49 States and about two dozen foreign countries who chose five top contenders in each of nine categories.

The Razzie Awards spread the “wealth” this year, with five movies receiving a leading six nominations apiece, including in the unfortunate Worst Picture race: Borderlands, Joker: Folie à Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, and Reagan. Meanwhile, Unfrosted received four bids, while The Crow nabbed two.
“At the dawn of a dark era, the 45th Razzies remain ready to pounce,” declared the organization, which announced its bids one day after the inauguration of the 47th president and two days before the 2025 Oscars nominations. Fun fact: the ultimate “winners” of these categories will take home a “$4.97 gold spray-painted statuette.”
Oscar winners nominated for Golden Raspberries this year include Joaquin Pheonix (Joker: Folie à Deux), Cate Blanchett (Borderlands), Lady Gaga (Joker: Folie à Deux), Ariana DeBose (Argylle and Kraven the Hunter), and Jon Voight.

This year’s Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Thursday, after being delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires. As such, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.
For “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated DC Comics crime film “Joker,” landed nods in worst picture, director, screenplay and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are both up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. All the stars are here! It’s that magical time of year when the biggest bombs in Hollywood gather to celebrate mediocrity at the Razzie Awards! This year’s presentation of The Golden Razzies finds multiple flops joining hands in the battle to escape accolades as the worst movies and performances of the year, including Joker: Folie a Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, Borderlands, and Reagan.
Borderlands, Megalopolis, Madame Web, Joker: Folie a Deux, and Reagan earned six nominations apiece, forming a Megazord of misguided executions on the silver screen. Not far behind are Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted and The Crow swooping in with four nominations and two nominations, respectively. Aw, c’mon! The Crow wasn’t that bad! It was a tad uninspired, but at least they didn’t try to remake the original full-stop. Who’s with me? Bueller? Bueller? Oh, well.

It’s that time of year again, when Hollywood celebrates the year’s best motion pictures and performances and such. It’s also when the Razzie Awards turns all that on its ear.
In the running for Worst Picture at the 45th Golden Raspberry Awards — watch a video about them above — are vidgame adaptation Borderlands, musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, Marvel’s Madame Web, Freancis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis and presidential biopic Reagan.
Not coincidentally, all five are tied with six Razzie noms apiece. Those films’ helmers also are up for the Director “prize,” except for Reagan‘s Sean McNamara; Jerry Seinfeld took that fifth slot for his Pop Tarts comedy Unfrosted. The erstwhile sitcom king also is up for Worst Actor.

Patrick Dempsey's potential Scream 7 return has been clarified after a surprise casting announcement. In the slasher franchise's 2022 legacy sequel, it was revealed that longtime final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is married to a man named Mark, which seemed to imply that she had married Dempsey's Scream 3 character, detective Mark Kincaid. However, it was recently revealed that the upcoming Scream 7, which is currently filming under the auspices of director Kevin Williamson, had cast Community star Joel McHale in the role of Mark instead, and that the character's last name is Evans.
Entertainment Weekly has followed up on this surprising casting announcement. After reaching out to representatives for both the production company Spyglass and Patrick Dempsey, they learned that the actor will not be appearing in the movie whatsoever. That’s all the more impressive considering it was shot over the course of seven years in the ‘80s by teenagers in Mississippi, meaning the actors visibly age from scene to scene. The shot-for-shot remake fell into the hands of Eli Roth, who arranged for its screening at a film festival in 2002, bringing it to a wide audience. Having emerged as one of Hollywood's biggest stars over the past few years, Barry Keoghan is set to join the Peaky Blinders universe, and his upcoming movie is the perfect preview of what his role could look like. The Peaky Blinders movie's cast already looked exciting before Keoghan was brought on board, as alongside the returns of Cillian Murphy, Sophie Rundle, and other series regulars, Rebecca Ferguson and Eli Roth's additions added some real star power to the film. However, with the Irish actor also involved, the franchise's cinematic debut looks extremely exciting, and Keoghan may have the ideal warm-up.

We have the recent box office success of the Scream and Halloween franchises, coupled with Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving back in 2023, to thank for the return of the holiday slasher movie, which was of course a staple of the genre back in the 1980s. Everything is an allusion, a pose, in the films of Quentin Tarantino, right down to the font and colors that he uses for his title sequences—even the name of his production company, A Band Apart, which arrogantly asks us to think of him as our generation’s Godard. And how willingly we indulge him says plenty. Tarantino is as much creator as curator, and his overbearing cinephilia appeals to audiences who not only lost it at the movies but can’t seem to live without them: From Reservoir Dogs to his Kill Bill diptych, his films are solipsistic totems to his favorite things, and their effect is often suffocating.
Inglourious Basterds, a WWII-set revenge fantasy about the secret and sometimes not-so-secret maneuverings of a group of gung-ho Jewish-American Nazi hunters known as the Basterds, is no less meticulously engineered than Tarantino’s other pulp fictions. Except this one is...

Viola Davis and Ted Danson got their golden moment a couple of days before the Golden Globes.
On Friday, the duo was feted in a lavish “Golden Gala” as this year’s recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award (Davis) and the Carol Burnett Award (Danson) for their respective career achievements in film and television. (Watch their full speeches below.) Traditionally these awards have been bestowed live during the annual Golden Globes broadcast, but that’s not the case this year; instead, Davis and Danson have been asked to present at Sunday’s ceremony on CBS.
Meryl Streep presented the award to Davis, exactly eight years after Davis honored her Doubt co-star with the same prestigious trophy. As for Danson, his wife Mary Steenburgen served as the presenter. The Cecil B. In 2006, Stephen King wrote an apocalyptic horror novel that remolded the contagion metaphor into something atypical. While zombies are front and center in this paranoia-fueled tale, these creatures are not reanimated corpses who have mutated beyond recognition, à la the infected in "The Last of Us." Instead, these zombies are former cell phone users who have transformed after a global network signal called The Pulse is sent out, turning them into rabid killers. This novel, "Cell," captures the unprecedented chaos brought about by this unlikely situation, with a struggling artist named Clayton serving as our entry point into this world on the brink of collapse.
It is worth noting that King wrote "Cell" during a time when cell phones weren't as accessible as today (to the point that they have evolved into a necessity), offering a technologically-wary perspective of a phenomenon yet to happen. This pessimistic outlook serves the purpose...

George Folsey Jr., the longtime producer and film editor for director John Landis, has died at the age of 85, according to his family.
The son of 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer George J. Folsey, whose credits included “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “Forbidden Planet,” Folsey Jr. got his start in editing at Kabc in Los Angeles, where he edited documentaries and news reports for broadcast in the 1960s.
He then moved into cinema by learning the trade at MGM, where his father had worked, alongside “Grand Prix” Oscar-winning editor Henry Berman. His first feature film project was Alexander Singer’s “Glass Houses,” a 1972 film in which Folsey was editor, cinematographer and producer.
A year later, Folsey was hired to edit John Landis’ debut feature film “Schlock,” a sendup of “King Kong” in which an ape man chased out of his cave wanders into a Southern California neighborhood and develops an unrequited crush on a teen girl.

After Peaky Blinders' epic conclusion in 2022, it seemed like the series was done for good, but the franchise's future plans are a positive omen for Tommy's fate in the upcoming movie. The critically acclaimed drama show blew viewers away with its gripping story following Thomas Shelby and his criminal gang slowly growing its empire after WW1. Despite the plot concluding in a definitive fashion, a Peaky Blinders movie was confirmed and is set to debut on Netflix with the project wrapping filming in mid-December, hinting at a late 2025 or potential 2026 release date for the project.
Alongside Cillian Murphy and many other series regulars reprising their roles for the cinematic project, the likes of Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson, and Eli Roth have also joined the Peaky Blinders movie's cast. Murphy's stock has only grown since he last played the character, as his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer makes his return to...

What are the 10 worst movies of 2024? There has been some debate about whether you should write an article listing the “10 Worst Films of 2024.” For me, I think it’s imperative to keep studios in check. Yes, it was an excellent year for film, and you can read our ranking of “The 20 Best Movies of 2024” as well, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t a few cinematic experiences so awful they made you regret your most precious resource: time.
Yes, some misfires had their hearts in the right place. However, most were intentionally bad and ploys to steal your money and your sanity. Check out our list and let us know if you agree.

The long-awaited Borderlands movie finally hit theatres on 8th August 2024 and has finally transitioned into digital media less than three weeks after its release. Directed by Eli Roth, the film has faced a turbulent journey from production to release, with reshoots, delays, and a significant creative overhaul. Despite its star-studded cast, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black, the movie has been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, holding piss poor 9% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Our very own critic at High on Films called it the ‘worst movie of the year.’ Now, as more viewers are likely to pay attention to the video game adaptation after its lukewarm performance during the theatrical run, the chaotic and action-packed events that unfold on the desolate planet of Pandora, many may find themselves being puzzled by Borderlands (2024)’s various turns and ending.

Full of snappy dialogue, stylish scenery, and captivating stories, "Suits" more than passes the bar when it comes to contemporary, mass appeal, prestige television. After enjoying an impressive but relatively muted nine-season run from 2011 to 2019, the USA series suddenly became one of the most popular TV shows in the 2020s thanks to a bump from Netflix. The renewed interest in it has apparently been so overwhelming that NBC ordered a spin-off from series creator Aaron Korsh.
Korsh's new series -- titled "Suits L.A." -- will feature a new law firm and a brand new cast of characters, led by "Arrow" star Stephen Amell. While fans of the mothership series may not be surprised by this choice, the absence of these beloved actors will surely be felt, especially since it's hard to find many of them in other shows, unless you know where to look.

I’ve said it time and time again, but Christmas is definitely the holiday with the most horror movies centered around it. Classics like Black Christmas which got no sequels, but two Very different remakes, Gremlins, and Christmas Evil gave way to modern classics like Better Watch Out, Krampus, and Terrifier 3. Then you have the one series that decided to make a whole interconnected universe out of the holiday. With 5 movies that sometimes, rarely, kinda connect with each other and 4 of them out of the way, its finally time to look at the last entry in the series before the quasi remake came out in 2012. I’ve had the pleasure to discuss 1, 3, and 4 in one way or another on the channel and part 5 deserves its flowers too. While two is an awfully good movie, 3-5 can all count as a black sheep and 5 especially has its weird moments both in...

2005 was filled with great slasher, spooky, and creature-feature movies. Early 2000s horror movies weren't afraid to push boundaries and scare audiences in new and exciting ways. Movies like Saw 2, Hostel, and The Devil's Rejects displayed a whole new type of brutal horror subgenre and showed just how terrifying the world could be in these franchises. These graphically violent movies weren't the first of their genre, but they brought the shock value that audiences felt worldwide.
Released in the same year, movies like The Ring 2 and The Exorcism of Emily Rose were about ominous, supernatural horror. These movies were about suffering from within and the vengeful spirits inside the main characters. There was such a wide range of horror movies, proving that people loved all subgenres of horror movies and were open to anything unsettling. 2005 was the year of fear in movies, from realistic, sadistic killers to supernatural horror...

Playing host to some of the best movies of all time, the war genre is renowned for producing gripping and nuanced characters of the highest order. Whether these be fictional faces or individuals based on real-life figures, the most memorable characters are usually complemented by the superb quality of the performance coming from the individual playing them. As such, the typical status quo sees the most compelling characters combined with the most talented A-listers' performances to create the genre's most celebrated and influential roles.
However, while such roles are typically associated with the film in question's main character, the genre also features several great supporting war movie roles from A-List actors. From the best anti-war movies ever made to war films that don't focus on the USA, these notable supporting roles have featured in some of the most prominent and lauded movies that the genre has to offer, varying in...

2024 was a rollercoaster of cinematic highs and lows and honestly, we had our expectations from plenty of movies, especially at the box office. Hollywood literally dazzled us with spinoffs, sequels, and original stories that set our screens ablaze. While Deadpool & Wolverine had us cheering and whatnot, Inside Out 2 resonated at heartstrings, and let’s not forget Wicked, which has truly turned theaters into magical concert halls, Joker: Folie à Deux definitely broke out hearts. Undoubtedly, 2024 was a year of bold moves, epic storytelling, and well, some serious box office heartbreaks too.

Quentin Tarantino remains one of the most celebrated and respected directors working in Hollywood today. After he became a major name due to his breakout hit, Pulp Fiction, in 1994, he would go on to direct a handful of films that were either critically acclaimed or box office successes, or both. Tarantino movies often share a number of unique characteristics that make them instantly distinguishable, including memorable dialogue and select actors who have become regulars in his projects.
These regulars include Samuel L. Jackson, Eli Roth, Michael Madsen, and Harvey Keitel, but Fassbender is not among them. Fassbender worked steadily throughout the early 2000s, but it wasn't until later in the decade that his career really started to take off. After starring in Hunger (2008), the actor joined his first major franchise in 2011 with X-Men: First Class, in which he played a younger Magneto. It's been a long road, getting from there to here.
Jon Turteltaub's 2018 shark thriller "The Meg" was based on Steve Alten's novel "Meg" that was published way back in 1997. The book was optioned for a film adaptation by Hollywood Pictures, a Disney subsidiary, the year prior, and several screenplay drafts were immediately written. Jeffrey Boam was said to have written an adaptation of "Meg," but Disney didn't like it. Indeed, none of those screenplays were deemed good enough to develop into an actual feature, and three years passed without any movement on the project. In 1999, the rights reverted to Alten.
Then, in 2005, the book was optioned again, this time by New Line Cinema. The new version of "Meg" was going to be an impressive affair, with Shane Salerno as its screenwriter, and Jan de Bont as director. A 2008 report in the Los Angeles Times even noted that "Meg...

These stars all became icons in their own right, yet each has different qualities that make them stand out in film history.

Eli Roth’s trampoline scene from Grindhouse stands as one of the anthology’s most infamous moments, and the horror director returns to break down the iconic kill. Released in 2007, Grindhouse is a double feature paying homage to 1970s exploitation cinema, comprised of Quentin Tarantino's slasher Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez's zombie-comedy Planet Terror. The anthology also included faux trailers by prominent horror directors, including Roth’s Thanksgiving, a holiday-themed slasher trailer packed with over-the-top gore and satirical humor.
In a conversation with Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo San Francisco (where Screen Rant was a media partner), Roth revisited Thanksgiving's now-iconic trampoline gag, where a cheerleader doing a split meets a gruesome end on a knife. Roth contended that this scene became the standout gross-out moment in Grindhouse, beating the efforts of his fellow gore directors. Here's what he had to say:

Last November, horror director Eli Roth surprised audiences with a slasher that was less sexy than expected. His film “Thanksgiving” still found a huge following — bringing in $46.5 million at the box office and securing itself a sequel for 2025. But when compared to Roth’s earlier cult favorites (think “The Green Inferno” or “Hostel II”), this R-rated effort from 2023 is decidedly lacking in one thing: nudity.
Now, a year later, Damien Leone has revolutionized genre indies by doing the opposite with his unrated… and, at times, unclothed… “Terrifier 3.” A bareback display of ultraviolence, the Christmas-themed sequel broke records in October — earning $88 million and briefly becoming the No. 1 film in the country. It also features what might be the most brutal shower sex scene ever made. So, what’s different?

The filmmaker, known for Hostel and Cabin Fever, has dabbled in both. His first few movies as director were low-budget horror movies often defined by their intense gore. However, recent years have seen Roth turn to more traditional studio fare with larger budgets; most recently, he directed Liongsate's Borderlands, a large-scale adaptation of the video game series of the same name.
During a panel hosted by Screen Rant's Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo San Francisco, Roth reflected on the career trajectories of filmmakers like Peter Jackson and Christopher Nolan, who started with modest resources before moving on to larger-scale productions. According to Roth, low-budget productions demand ingenuity and adaptability, separating directors who thrive under constraints from those who rely heavily on financial backing. 2024 is one to forget for Lionsgate, but Borderlands stands out as the studio's biggest box office flop. Following a disastrous $9 million opening weekend, the movie concluded its month-long run at the box office with a dismal $31 million before limping on to Digital platforms.
With a production budget of $115 million and a $30 million marketing campaign - which saw fans of the hit series of games largely reject everything they were seeing - the studio has likely lost upwards of $114 million.
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Borderlands is one of the worst-reviewed movies of the year with a dire 10% score. According to the Critics Consensus, "Glitching out in every department, Borderlands is balderdash." Fans, on the other hand, awarded it a slightly better but still-Rotten 51%.
Roth is believed to have run into creative differences with the studio and was reportedly replaced by Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate director Tim Miller for reshoots.

Eli Roth’s slasher Thanksgiving introduced the world to masked killer John Carver last year, nearly 20 years after the concept was originally teased with a faux trailer as part of the Grindhouse double feature experience. We won’t have to wait quite as long for more of Roth’s Thanksgiving, with Sony’s TriStar recently announcing that Thanksgiving 2 is coming in 2025.
Eli Roth and Jeff Rendell are back to write the screenplay for the upcoming slasher sequel, and Roth provides a fresh update on Thanksgiving 2 in a new chat with Indiewire.
For starters, the website notes that the sequel is in “soft prep” at the time of their article being published, “with plans to start shooting [Thanksgiving 2] at the end of March [2025].”
Roth teases, “We’re upping the ante but we are not going to do it with more money. That keeps it tight and lean and mean...

Quick Links Thanksgiving 2: Further News & Info Eli Roth's Thanksgiving brings terror to Turkey Day in a brand-new slasher film, and a frightening sequel, Thanksgiving 2, is on the horizon. Expanded from a fake trailer that originally appeared in 2007's Grindhouse, Thanksgiving is a classic revenge slasher in which a crazed ax-wielding murderer stalks the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts in order to get even for a violent Black Friday shopping riot. Made with Roth's signature penchant for gore, Thanksgiving is also a clever social satire about the rise of consumerism and how it ruins the spirit of the holidays.Despite its divisive subject matter and blood-soaked scenes, Thanksgiving has been warmly received by many critics who appreciate the film's subtext that plays out beneath the typical slasher movie mayhem (via Rotten Tomatoes). Thanksgiving is currently the third movie to be adapted from a fake trailer in Grindhouse,...

Borderlands director Eli Roth candidly recalls the video game movie adaptation's troubled production, following its critical and box office failure. Borderlands' box office performance is one of the worst for a high-budget film in 2024, only managing to scrape together $33 million worldwide against a budget of $110-120 million. The film was also critically panned, sporting a 10% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, citing it as a poor adaptation of its video game source material. This includes criticism of its PG-13 ratings when the games are rated M for Mature, and its generic translation to the big screen.
Speaking with IndieWire, Roth briefly recalled the production of Borderlands, alluding to just how troubled the creation of the video game adaptation truly was. Though he didn't go into detail, he explained that the Covid-19 pandemic was a determining factor in how production shaped up, and that he "could write a book" on all the behind-the-scenes details of the film.
