When Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets was announced, it felt like a potential triumph for science fiction cinema. With the visionary director Luc Besson at the helm, best known for his beloved sci-fi classic The Fifth Element, audiences were promised an extravagant space odyssey based on a series of groundbreaking French comic books. Besson’s ambitious goal was to build a cosmic saga with cutting-edge visuals, a sprawling narrative, and an impressive budget of nearly $200 million, making it one of the most expensive European films ever made. The movie boasted a star-studded cast including Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, and Rihanna, and it had the look and feel of an epic new chapter in science fiction cinema. However, when Valerian hit theaters in 2017, the results were disappointing. While praised for its groundbreaking visuals and vast world-building, it failed to connect with mainstream audiences and ultimately suffered a massive financial blow.

Film Fests 2024: Shah Rukh Khan Excites Locarno, ‘Anora’ Seduces Cannes, Erotic Fare Turns on Venice
The 2024 global film festival circuit featured something for every taste — from celebrated Lithuanian art house fare, such as Locarno winner Toxic and Drowning Dry, to such audience favorites as Sean Baker’s Anora and Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, from the highs to the lows, all garnished, of course, with a big serving of star power.
Some film events, such as Poland’s Camerimage, were hit by controversy, while others boosted their prominence, with Switzerland’s Locarno, for example, cementing its role as a top-tier global fest, and Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic showed once again why it is known as Central Europe’s biggest film party of the summer.
Here’s a look at The Hollywood Reporter highlights of the 2024 film festival season.
Female power at Cannes.
Anora, Emilia Pérez and body horror The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, were among the revelations of the world premieres on the Croisette.

Spike Lee's "Inside Man" is a loving homage to New York City and Sidney Lumet's "Dog Day Afternoon," infused with post-9/11 anxieties, an eclectic cast, and unexpected twists. Sleek and exciting, this popcorn flick is about a game of wits between law enforcement officers and bank robbers as they try to get hostages out safely. All of this unfolds against the backdrop of Wall Street corruption and a bank owner with blood on his hands.
There's a palpable tension between Keith Frazier, who wants to make detective first grade after being falsely accused of stealing money from a drug bust, and the robber, Dalton Russell, who claims he will execute "the perfect bank robbery." Spike Lee offered both of these lead roles to Denzel Washington, who had been in several other of his films such as "Mo' Better Blues," "Malcolm X," and "He Got Game." As Spike Lee...

As anyone who's watched any of the Star Wars sequel trilogy will already know, Daisy Ridley is no stranger to a spot of badass action. Fighting Kylo Ren on Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens, taking down the Praetorian Guards in The Last Jedi, *that* flip over the Tie Silencer in The Rise Of Skywalker — all in a day's work for our Daisy. But all of that pales in comparison to what the Magpie star has in store with her latest movie, Sky Original action joint Cleaner. Directed by none other than Goldeneye and Casino Royale helmsman Martin Campbell, this one is set to see Ridley get her John McClane on as an ex-soldier-turned-window-cleaner tasked with saving hundreds of people from a Clive Owen led cell of criminal activists — all while suspended at great height from a London skyscraper. Check out the vertiginous first trailer below:

Daisy Ridley joins forces with GoldenEye and Casino Royale director Martin Campbell for the upcoming thriller, Cleaner. Here’s a trailer.
While Lucasfilm dithers over whether or not its umpteenth script is good enough to get another Star Wars movie up and running, sequel trilogy star Daisy Ridley is taking on another genre entirely. Bruce Willis and all of the other Hollywood stars who’ve tried to emulate the success of Die Hard are squarely in her sights and she’s coming for them.
Ridley will next appear in Cleaner, an upcoming thriller in which her ex-army skills become vital in saving innocent lives. Here’s the synopsis:

When it comes to jobs, there’s not a lot I wouldn’t consider doing… but high-rise window cleaner is certainly not one of them, and that’s without a group of gun-totting extremists in the picture. Quiver Distribution has dropped the official red-band trailer for Cleaner, an action thriller starring Daisy Ridley.

"If you touch him, I will end you." Daisy Ridley is the new John McClane? Quiver has revealed the official trailer for Cleaner, an action thriller for Martin Campbell. This has such an extremely dumb, propaganda-based concept pegging environmental activists as bad guys. It's obviously influenced by the UK's hate for the "Just Stop Oil" people, which I have always found strange, with a script that makes them look even worse. Ugh. Even the action doesn't look unique or exciting, which is a pity. In Cleaner, activists hijack an energy company's gala, taking 300 hostages. One extremist plans mass murder as a message to the world. An ex-soldier turned window cleaner now works to rescue the hostages. Starring Daisy Ridley, Taz Skylar, and Clive Owen. So this is pretty much just a redo of Die Hard, but instead of Hans Gruber they have these "rogue" activists vs a window cleaner? I...

Robert Friedman has been in the media space for decades, helping lead established companies like New Line and MTV, back when movies and television were the only game in town. The media landscape has fractured since then, with the rise of streaming services scrambling the old ways of doing business. And Friedman (everybody calls him “Bobby”), has adapted with it.
In 2013, Friedman left Radical Media, the company behind “Under African Skies” and the “Mad Men” pilot that was a pioneer in the branded content space, and decided to strike out on his own. “The velocity of change was incredible, and I felt like there must be a better way of doing things,” he said during a recent interview at his Manhattan office.

Could the New Netflix JonBenét Ramsey Docuseries Lead to an Arrest? Director Joe Berlinger Thinks So
The unresolved case of JonBenét Ramsey has been the subject of countless documentaries and dramatic television retellings throughout the last 28 years. The latest content about the case is Netflix’s “Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey” — a three-part docuseries about the 6-year-old child beauty queen who was brutally murdered on Dec. 26, 1996, in Boulder, Colo.
JonBenét’s parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, woke up the morning after Christmas in 1996 and discovered a ransom note in their kitchen. Later that same day, John Ramsey found his daughter’s body in the basement, revealing that JonBenét had not been kidnapped but was instead sexually assaulted and killed in the family home. Soon after, the Boulder police, who had little experience in homicide investigations, quickly turned their suspicions toward the Ramsey family, igniting a media frenzy that painted JonBenét’s parents as the prime suspects.

Colin Chilvers, a pioneering, Oscar-winning Hollywood visual effects artist who created movie magic for Superman, apocalyptic scenarios and even The Who’s Tommy, died November 19 in Fort Erie, Ontario, where he lived. He was 79.
His death was first reported Wednesday by the news station 101.1 FM in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Among Chilvers’ more memorable feats were the effects that gave Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder the illusion of flying in Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman, work that had him share in a team Oscar for Visual Effects.
In 1986, Chilvers created the dazzling trickery that allowed Michael Jackson to defy gravity by leaning forward 45 degrees with no visible means of support in the music video for “Smooth Criminal.” Chilvers directed the video, along with various other Jackson video collections.
Chilvers’ post-Superman credits from the ’80s through the 2000s also included Superman 2 and Superman 3, Bride of Chucky, X-Men and K-19: The Widowmaker.

Netflix is unearthing the cold case of JonBenét Ramsey. In a new docuseries, they are diving into the mismanagement of her murder. Furthermore, they are following the evidence that was originally not examined.
JonBenét Ramsey’s Shocking Murder Changed The World
On December 26, 1996, child beauty queen, JonBenét Ramsey’s death shook the world. At that time, she was found murdered in the basement of her family’s home in Boulder, Co with evidence of sexual assault. During the infamous cold case, the focus was on her family during the initial investigation. Since the police were inexperienced and zoned in on proving the parents were at fault, they missed other evidence that was leading to an outside perpetrator. The new Netflix docuseries, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey, will dive deeper into the unsolved case later this month.

While shows like the American Crime Story series and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story continue to grip audiences as tightly as when the headlines first broke, Netflix has now released the trailer for one of the most notoriously unsolved mysteries of the 90s. Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey? will attempt to analyze this media sensation as no one has yet been brought to justice over this crime. The trailer has just been released and the three-part documentary is set to hit the streamer on November 25.
The description reads,
“On December 26, 1996, John and Patsy Ramsey woke up the morning after a loving family Christmas to discover their youngest child, six-year-old JonBenét, was missing, a chilling ransom note left downstairs. Later that day, John Ramsey discovered his daughter’s body in the basement, revealing the shocking truth that JonBenét had not been kidnapped, but was instead sexually assaulted and...

Exclusive: Alex Pettyfer (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) and Karl Markovics (The Counterfeiters) have joined Clive Owen in historical thriller Kristallnacht.
Stefan Ruzowitzky, who teamed with Markovics on 2008 Oscar winner The Counterfeiters, is directing. International Film Trust is selling at this week’s American Film Market in Las Vegas.
Set on the brink of World War II in Berlin, the true story unfolds in a city turned into a powder keg after the assassination of a German attaché in Paris, which is wrongfully branded a “Jewish terrorist attack” by Nazi propaganda. Pettyfer plays Kai Lehmann, a young and impressionable police officer, who, alongside his superior Lieutenant Krützfeld, played by Owen, navigates the turbulent streets of Berlin as citizens turn violently against the perceived “enemy within,” descending on Jewish neighborhoods.

What sets Alfonso Cuaron’s “Children of Men” (2006) apart from other futuristic dystopian films is its immersive world, which at times feels like a premonition of an impending future. It accomplishes this by saturating every scene with images we are all too familiar with – those of homelessness, poverty, terrorist bombings, pollution, urban decay, stranded immigrants, and large-scale protests. The writing then magnifies them to create a portrait of a society on the brink of collapse.
It’s not just the visuals but even the news you hear on the radio and the advertisements that are on some television in the background are meticulously thought out. It’s said that after 9/11, Cuarón traveled the world, including a visit to Ground Zero in New York City shortly after the attacks, capturing images of protests, and migrant camps, and speaking with people from all walks of life. Watching “Children of Men,” I have to say,...

Producers and distributors heading to Las Vegas for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Nov. 5-10, are betting big that indie action is primed for a comeback.
The AFM was built on action movies — the leading independent film bazaar launched in 1981 at the start of a decade defined by the cinematic stylings of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Segal, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. But in recent markets, with the headline-grabbing success of breakouts like Neon’s Longlegs and Cineverse’s Terrifier 3, action has taken a backseat to horror.
There will be scares-a-plenty at AFM 2024, but many of the market’s buzziest projects sit squarely in the action space. Even a few that don’t star Liam Neeson, Gerard Butler, Jason Statham or Nic Cage. How buyers respond to this new generation of would-be action stars — Daisy Ridley, Amber Midthunder, Alan Ritchson — will determine who...

Could you imagine someone other than Mark Harmon playing Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the NCIS cast?
No, we aren’t talking about the Young Gibbs we have seen in flashbacks and on NCIS: Origins. We are talking about someone else nabbing the role on NCIS before Harmon got it.
Harmon starred as Gibbs on NCIS from 2003 until 2021. He left the show early in Season 19, and Gibbs was retired to Alaska.
Harmon also appears on NCIS: Origins, serving as the narrator and appearing in scenes where Gibbs writes a memorial about his exploits.
Actor Austin Stowell now plays the Young Gibbs on NCIS: Origin, taking the mantle from Sean Harmon, who had played Young Gibbs in NCIS flashbacks.
NCIS fans continue hoping that Gibbs (played by Harmon) will have a reason to resurface on the primary show in the future.
Who else could have played Gibbs on NCIS?

The six-episode limited series from William Oldroyd and adapted from Alice Feeney’s novel is set in the sweltering heat of Atlanta where Anna (Thompson) lives in haunting reclusivity and is fading away from her friends and career as a journalist. Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal) is strangely suspicious of her involvement, chasing her into the crosshairs of his own investigation. There are two sides to every story, his and hers, which means someone is always lying.

Villains really are the new superheroes.
DC Studios has tapped screenwriter Matthew Orton (“Captain America: Brave New World”) to write a feature film that will involve Batman villains Bane and Deathstroke, Variety has confirmed. The project is still in its infancy: There are no stars or director attached, and DC Studios chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran have been clear that they will not greenlight a project until they are satisfied with a complete screenplay.
The movie follows a growing trend in the superhero space of projects focusing as much on the villains as on the heroes, from the ongoing HBO series “The Penguin” and Disney+ series “Agatha All Along” to Warner Bros. upcoming sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux” and Sony’s upcoming Marvel adaptations “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kraven the Hunter.”

One of the world's most beloved and distinguished actresses, Dame Maggie Smith, has passed away at the age of 89. While modern audiences know her best as a wise, poison-tongued woman from two major British franchises, she has been charming audiences for the better part of eight decades. Sadly, Smith's publicist reports (via AP) that Smith has passed away. Smith is survived by five grandchildren and her two sons, English actors Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.
Smith is best known for being a core part of millennials' childhood as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the "Harry Potter" franchise -- on set, she despised the hats and is said to have had a scary reputation. Later, she earned critical acclaim as Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in the wildly popular "Downton Abbey" series and its two feature films, though she grew tired of the fame it brought her.
