Beverly Hills Cop was truly one of the greatest comedies of the 1980s, and it boasted an incredibly talented cast of comedic performers. While this was the movie that turned Eddie Murphy from a notable comedian into an international superstar, it also featured many iconic performances from the rest of its acclaimed cast. Although for some Beverly Hills Cop cast members this may have been their best-known role, when digging into the backlogs of their filmographies, its shocking just how many hidden comedic gems there are just waiting to be discovered.
The legacy of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise has been absolutely huge, as not only did it feature one of the greatest synth movie scores of the 1980s, but it also helped revitalize the buddy cop genre for a new era. Murphys characterization of Axel Foley was packed with humor, but just as important were his supporting actors, who...

Eddie Murphy fought to keep the iconic banana in the tailpipe joke out of the new Beverly Hills Cop sequel. The director kept pushing for the joke, but Murphy insisted on avoiding recycling the gag. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F brings back famous franchise cast members and music, but not the banana in the tailpipe.
Eddie Murphy reveals the one reference to the original Beverly Hills Cop that he fought to keep out of Axel F. Murphys iconic 1980s cop is back in Netflixs streaming sequel, and so too are many elements from the original movies, including the iconic "Axel F" theme song. One joke from Og Beverly Hills Cop that didnt make its way to the sequel, however, is the banana in the tailpipe, a gag that, in the first film, saw Axel foiling police officers on his tail by sabotaging their vehicle in a hilarious way.

There was little doubt that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F would enjoy quite the debut on Netflix, with the only question being just how well it would do. Well, Netflix announced today that the long-awaited sequel has debuted at the #1 spot on the English Films List with 41 million views, easily making it the most-watched title of the week.
The #2 spot was filled by the romantic comedy A Family Affair, starring Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron. It had 31.9 million views, nearly 10 million less than Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. I still think this film would have done great in theaters, but what can you do?
Now, what does this mean for another Beverly Hills Cop sequel? It likely confirms that Eddie Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were right to have already started brainstorming ideas. “They’re developing it,” Murphy said at last month’s world premiere. “If it comes together, we’ll be doing another one.

There are quite a few movies that would be perfect to watch after Netflix's Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. This includes classic buddy movies such as Rush Hour and 48 Hrs. Other perfect post-Axel F movies include the action legacy sequels Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Shaft.
After watching Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix, there are ten titles to watch that can recapture the tone of the new movie. Axel F is a legacy sequel to the Beverly Hills Cop action-comedy franchise, which stars Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley. The franchise originated with the 1984 movie of the same name, which was followed by a pair of sequels in 1987 and 1994. Although a television spinoff was explored with an aborted pilot in 2013, the franchise remained dormant for thirty years until the release of the new installment.

The Beverly Hills Cop series of films is a pop culture phenomenon. The first film was released in 1984, and ever since, it has set quite the precedent in the comedy genre. Eddie Murphy became a superstar overnight, and the actor/comedian has not looked back ever since. Beverly Hills Cop is a cop comedy film that follows Axel Foley, who always finds himself in this part of Los Angeles and has friends who help him solve cases that are outside his jurisdiction. The fourth film, a Netflix Original, is a sequel to the third film released thirty years ago. Three decades later, Axel is back, and this time there are far more important people to him whose lives are at stake.

Eddie Murphy reunites with familiar faces in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, adding Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige, and Kevin Bacon to the cast. Not all original characters return, with some killed off or retired, such as Inspector Todd and Lt. Bogomil. Some actors like Lisa Eilbacher and Theresa Randle, who played significant roles in previous films, do not return for Axel F.

Eddie Murphy is back as Axel Foley to help celebrate the 4th of July holiday. He is returning to one of his most legendary roles in Mark Molloy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which is playing exclusively on Netflix. The previous entry in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Beverly Hills Cop III, was released in 1994 and received mixed reviews. In the latest chapter of the Axel Foley saga, Detroit’s finest ditches the rickety rides of Wonder World to return to the streets of Beverly Hills after his daughter, Jane Saunders, is threatened.

Actors almost never become movie stars overnight. Even the born-to-dazzle likes of Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, and Paul Newman needed a bit of runway to soar to that rarified Hollywood air. Eddie Murphy, however, needed just one moment in his first movie to become a generational showbiz phenomenon.
That moment arrived 38 minutes into Walter Hill's 1982 action-comedy hit "48 Hrs.," when Murphy's furloughed criminal Reggie Hammond convinces Nick Nolte's Detective Jack Cates to let him shakedown a redneck bar's racist patrons for information on the whereabouts of a cop killer. Reggie, tired of Cates insistence that it takes "bullls*** and experience" to successfully interrogate suspects, invites the officer to "Come on in and experience some of my bulls***." Armed with nothing but Cates' shield and his mouth, Reggie bullies cows a saloon full of hostile white folks into terrified silence.

The trend of "legacy sequel" films are called that for a reason. For one thing, they cannot be labeled as such if a franchise has been mostly active ever since its inception (thus most horror franchises need not apply). For another, they all tend to deal with a literal question of legacy in some fashion. Some of these films approach that question from a "What influence does someone leave on the world" perspective, but many look at it from the most relatable angle: family.
Even though, technically, "Beverly Hills Cop" isn't wholly a 1980s franchise, it effectively is. The original 1984 film, directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify Eddie Murphy as a bonafide movie star, kicked the careers of producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson into a higher gear, and showcased a score by composer Harold Faltermeyer that arguably best encapsulates the sound of the decade. The sequel, made in 1987 by Tony Scott,...

It’s been over 30 years since Eddie Murphy’s intrepid Detroit detective, Axel Foley, last graced movie screens in Beverly Hills Cop III. A much-loved franchise from the 1980s, the films followed the fish-out-of-water Axel as he traded the gritty streets of Detroit for sun-drenched Southern California, blazing his own trail to solve crimes and throwing more than a few spanners in the works of the fancy Beverly Hills Police Department along the way.
Now in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy returns once again as the wisecracking yet dedicated cop, this time bringing his rebellious energy to help his estranged lawyer daughter Jane. When masked intruders dangle her from a parking structure, Axel jumps on a plane and dusts off the signature Lions windbreaker that made him an icon to find out who’s behind the threats. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F will go down as one of the best legacy sequels because it walks the fine line between being nostalgic about the past and welcoming new fans to the franchise. It has some Easter eggs and references to the last three films, but the movie doesn’t linger on those moments too much because that might alienate viewers who are entering the franchise with this Netflix release. Now, those who watch and rewatch the first three Beverly Hills Cop movies on an annual basis will probably be aware of the callbacks and nods to the films. However, those who are just getting familiar with the series will probably be a little clueless. So, here’s a list to help them out.

Eddie Murphy was a household name in the United States of America way before he forayed into films due to his standup comedy. But, if my memory isn’t failing me, he garnered international fame after his work in The Nutty Professor, Mulan, and Dr. Dolittle. And after he became the voice of Donkey in Shrek, every kid in the whole wide world became familiar with Murphy’s body of work. However, as the cinematic landscape, especially the comedy genre, started to change, and the pile of bad reviews turned into a mountain, Murphy decided to take a break. His return to the big screen wasn’t all that good. So, he took yet another break and returned with one of the best movies of all time, Dolemite Is My Name. Now, he seems to be in the mood to reprise some of his older roles. Comedy 2 America wasn’t good.

Review: Right off the bat, it’s clear that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F director Mark Molloy nailed the assignment. In the movie’s first scene, we see Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley driving around his beloved Detroit, cracking a smile as Glenn Frey’s “The Heat is On” fills the soundtrack. It’s not subtle, but it delivers the message loud and clear that for the first time since the second film in 1987, we can legitimately say there’s a new Beverly Hills Cop movie out, and it kicks butt. Wholeheartedly embracing an R-rating, with frequent F-bombs and surprisingly hardcore action beats, Molloy’s made a movie that will likely prove to...

Eddie Murphy cheerfully shoots his way through California’s wrong ‘uns in a charming revival of a 40-year-old franchise. Here’s our Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F review.
As the first Beverly Hills Cop movie to be released after its iconic theme was covered by Crazy Frog, Axel F perhaps lands on Netflix with more baggage than most.
It’s landing straight on Netflix, for a start, in a period where the streamer’s original output hasn’t been exactly glowing (Richard Linklater’s Hit Man being a notable exception). Action-comedy The Fall Guy just failed to set the box office alight, and after years of sequels, reboots, and sequel-reboots, it’s easy to imagine that we’re approaching peak franchise-fatigue. Was anyone really asking for a Beverly Hills Cop 4?
The answer might well be no, but, now that it’s here, I’m happy to report that Beverly Hills Cop...

Eddie Murphy was only 23 when "Beverly Hills Cop" arrived in theaters in 1984, and the action comedy helped make him a superstar. Murphy's raw talent was already apparent thanks to his work on "Saturday Night Live," a show he joined when he as 19. His feature debut in Walter Hill's 1982 flick "48 Hrs." took him even further, as did his follow-up movie, 1983's "Trading Places". But "Beverly Hills Cop," directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify that Murphy was the real deal; a bonafide movie star. It was a mega-hit, and almost immediately made trash-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley an iconic character. Murphy was so cool, so confident, so suave that he took the character to extreme heights, taking a high concept pitch — what if a tough city cop ended up in posh Beverly Hills? — and creating movie magic in the process. Like Eddie Murphy, Axel Foley was young, hip, and in-demand.

It is hard to believe it has been 40 years since Eddie Murphy first exploded onto the screen as one of his signature characters, Axel Foley, in 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop. But even if that 22 year old is now 63, he is still on the beat and doesn’t miss a beat all these years later in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, almost seeming to have stopped time with this character who is just as funny, sharp and entertaining as ever.
The original was the top-grossing movie of its year and led to two sequels, one in 1987 and another in 1994. That’s right, we haven’t had an Axel fix for 30 years, though not for lack of trying; there were several scripts along the way, but none felt right to its star until finally bringing in producer Jerry Bruckheimer who (with late partner Don Simpson) made the first couple of films.

There are a few valid reasons to make a sequel four decades down the track from an action-comedy blockbuster that left an indelible pop-cultural imprint: 1. A smart script with a completely fresh take on a formulaic genre. 2. Writing that digs into the ways an iconic character known for his rule-breaking irreverence adjusts to the social shifts of a different century. 3. New technology that allows for more explosive thrills. 4. The nostalgia of audiences for whom the original holds enduringly fond memories. 5. Lil Nas X agrees to write and perform a song, spinning rap verses around synthmeister Harold Faltermeyer’s catchy theme tune.
Sauntering along 30 years after the third installment opened to scalding reviews and underwhelming grosses, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F justifies its existence only with points 4 and 5. Which will likely be enough to satisfy diehard fans. Directed with journeyman efficiency by first-timer Mark Molloy and written by a committee that...

A renegade cop who refuses to play by the rules or pay any mind to the ungodly amount of collateral damage he causes in the name of saving Los Angeles from its own systemic rot, Axel Foley makes so much sense as the hero of a Netflix movie that it’s hard to believe the company didn’t invent him itself. Maybe that helps to explain why “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” feels sturdier and more self-possessed than your average straight-to-streaming legacy sequel, including Eddie Murphy’s own “Coming 2 America.” Here is a story of — and about — the diminished but enduring power of a classic brand in modern Hollywood (or at least the greater Hollywood area), and the moral of that story boils down to a simple idea: Familiarity is such a powerful force that it can inspire people to forgive pretty much anything.

If you are shocked by the rating we gave Netflix’s upcoming action-comedy sequel to the 40-year-old franchise Beverly Hills Cop franchise, then I am with you because I also went into watching this film with a lot of skepticism, but it kept winning me over again and again. After almost three decades, Eddie Murphy’s most famous and goofy character, Axel Foley, is back on our screen with Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024). While binge-watching those first three films in the franchise, I found myself wondering what makes Axel so special. I mean, he definitely has Eddie’s charm and wit, but what else? I guess it’s the way Axel solves crime. He is not your regular law-abiding cop who follows a chain of command. Instead, Axel lays down his own path. In his own words, Axel wasn’t always a cop but someone who had “fractured an occasional law” as a kid. I guess you know what it means. So, Axel thinks like a criminal to solve crimes, which is one of the many qualities that makes him stand out. And Axel doesn’t take anything to heart. Even in the worst situations, he is flaunting his healthy gums.

Axel Foley returning to Beverly Hills, an animated feature from former Studio Ghibli talent, a jaw-dropping doc about love-struck “rooftoppers” and final seasons from three big shows — a Spanish teen drama, a viking saga and Daniel Larusso’s last hurrah — are some of the highlights on Netflix in July.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Netflix’s high profile feature release for this month, arrives on July 3. The fourth installment in the Eddie Murphy-led action-comedy franchise, sees Detroit detective Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills, thirty years after his last visit. This time, Foley must team up with a new partner — played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt — when his daughter’s (Taylour Paige) life is threatened. Franchise fans will be happy to see regulars Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot) make appearances and series newcomer Kevin Bacon is also part of the action as Captain Grant.

The box office is finally seeing signs of life — once again, animation saves Hollywood — but that doesn't mean there aren't still reasons to stay at home and watch things on streaming. With the summer ramping up, and movies like "Despicable Me 4," "Twisters," and "Deadpool & Wolverine" giving us hope that the theatrical experience will remain a popular choice in the next month, we feel slightly less bad about recommending things to watch from the comfort of home.
Indeed, after a couple of slower months, Netflix is gearing up for one big summer, releasing some very highly anticipated titles, some surprising sequels, and also adding some modern classics with timely ties to movies still in theaters. With so many titles releasing on streaming every month and so little effort done by these platforms in advertising their own product, we're here to tell you what you should prioritize on Netflix in July.

It’s been nearly fifteen years since the release of Shrek: Forever After, but there have been rumblings of a fifth installment of the main franchise for some time. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri revealed last year that they were hoping to get the band back together for Shrek 5, but Eddie Murphy dropped a bombshell while speaking with Collider, saying that he’s already been in the recording booth for the new movie. He also revealed that Donkey will be getting his own standalone movie, which will be released after Shrek 5.
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” Murphy said. “Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek,...

Just two weeks out from the release of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix, Eddie Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are already thinking about Beverly Hills Cop 5.
“They’re developing it,” Murphy told Variety at the recent world premiere of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. “If it comes together, we’ll be doing another one.” Bruckheimer confirmed the news, adding, “We have a couple of stories in mind.” It sounds as though everyone is onboard for another installment, but it will all come down to how this long-awaited fourth movie is received. Our own Chris Bumbray attended the Axel F world premiere and had a blast, so you can expect to see his review right here on JoBlo.com closer to the streaming release of the movie.

Taylor Mac, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated performance artist and playwright, once spent 24 hours on a Brooklyn stage reexamining the American songbook while wearing ornate drag. Mac’s A 24-Decade History of Popular Music devoted one hour to each 10-year span since 1776, tracing U.S. history — particularly that of marginalized groups — through a glittering series of vignettes including “Yankee Doodle,” minstrel numbers, the Carousel aria “Soliloquy,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” lesbian anthems from the ’90s and much, much more. Mac spent six years performing the show in small chunks around the world before mounting it as a one-time endurance test that ranked among 2016’s most acclaimed cultural events.
A mere 650 people got to witness Mac’s feat live, but thanks to Oscar-winning directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Common Threads: Stories From the Quilt, about the large-scale project that memorialized AIDS victims), it’s been condensed and preserved via HBO.

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

The Beverly Hills Cop movie series started in 1984 and it was one of the works that made Eddie Murphy a household star in the 80s and 90s. The first two movies were highly successful, but the third movie was a box office bomb and was panned by critics; today, it is considered to be the weakest movie in the series. Now, in 2024, amidst the revival/reboot craze, Axel Foley is back once again as Murphy tries to revive his career after a series of failures and controversies. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is the fourth movie in the series and it will be released by Netflix on July 3, 2024 globally.
As we wait for the premiere, Netflix has just released the first official trailer for the upcoming movie, several months after the initial teaser was released. We on Fiction Horizon are bringing you the trailer for your enjoyment!

This shouldn’t be a big surprise, but it will be a welcome one: Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has officially been given an R-rating for “language throughout, violence and brief drug use.” Each of the previous three movies in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise was also released with an R-rating, so, as I said, no big surprise.

A number of directors are pursuing litigation against the digital indie film distributor 1091 Pictures for failing to make promised revenue-sharing payments after selling their films to the platform, now owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. Helmers are scrambling to reclaim distribution rights to their work out of fear that 1091 Pictures’ parent company could declare bankruptcy.
Filmmakers say they are owed their share of distribution revenue from licensing deals with 1091 but Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment has not come through with payments. Some have taken the company to court, including small-claims court, to press their cases.

Eddie Murphy is ready to have the last laugh as police lieutenant Axel Foley in the teaser trailer for Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
Hitting the streamer in the summer of 2024, the new movie from director Mark Molloy revives the action-comedy franchise three decades after the previous installment. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F stars Murphy as Detroit native Foley, who returns to Beverly Hills after the life of his daughter (Taylour Paige) is threatened.
The film sees Foley teaming with a new partner — played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt — while investigating a possible conspiracy and spending time with familiar faces including Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot). Kevin Bacon is also part of the action as Captain Grant.
“Watch your ass out there, Ok?” Reiser warns Murphy, who responds, “I’m gonna be fine. They love me in Beverly Hills.
