His Dark Materials is officially coming back for a third and final season.
HBO and BBC One have renewed the drama for a third run with the eight-episode season set to close the story. The latest season, which is based on Philip Pullman’s novels, begins production in Cardiff, Wales in 2021.
This comes as the second season of the Bad Wolf-produced drama concludes on Monday, December 28 on HBO.
Last month, Bad Wolf co-founder Jane Tranter told Deadline that Jack Thorne and a team of writers were working on scripts and that the series will be based on The Amber Spyglass. In January, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Deadline that he was particularly pleased that the drama had been a co-viewing hit with families.
The second season, which consisted of seven episodes due to Covid-19, follows Lyra, played by Dafne Keen, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world.

Lyra Belacqua’s story is getting a closing chapter.
HBO and the BBC have renewed “His Dark Materials,” the series adaptation of Philip Pullman’s classic novels, for a third and final season. The first two seasons have mirrored the books relatively closely, so it’s no huge surprise the show is being given one last outing to take a crack at “The Amber Spyglass,” the final book in Pullman’s trilogy.
News of the renewal comes less than a week after the season 2 finale is set to drop HBO, and only two days after the curtain call aired in the U.K. Production on the eight-episode third season is slated to begin in Cardiff in 2021.

His Dark Materials will be back with a bang in November as the HBO and BBC big-budget co-production returns for its second season.
HBO will launch the second season of the Bad Wolf-produced adaptation of the Philip Pullman books at 9 p.m. November 16. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
This comes as the team behind the series, which includes writer Jack Thorne, are prepping scripts for a possible third season. Although a third run hasn’t been commissioned, the hope on all sides is for it to run for more seasons.
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys told Deadline earlier this year that the first season had performed very well for the network and that he would like to do more. “One of the things that I was hoping for, and the numbers we’re seeing bear this out, it is more of a co-viewing show than we’ve ever had.

The creative team behind His Dark Materials has called the Philip Pullman adaptation a “challenging” show to write but the “quintessential” HBO/BBC co-production.
Writer Jack Thorne and exec producer Jane Tranter, who runs production company Bad Wolf, spoke about the big-budget fantasy epic alongside stars including Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda at its TCA press tour panel.
Thorne admitted that he wrote several dozens drafts for the first episode of the show, which is set to launch on HBO in October. “We wrote papers to ourselves about all the different ideas in the show. We wanted to do a Ph.D. in Phillip Pullman and we tried to do a Ph.D. in His Dark Materials. I wrote 46 drafts of episode one in order to find a way to tell this story as elegantly as possible. [Pullman’s] denseness is a blessing and a curse; it’s so exciting.

Slappy returns with a few frightening friends in the official trailer for Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.
Director Ari Sandel (The Duff) is directing the sequel to Rob Letterman's Goosebumps from a screenplay by Rob Lieber (co-writer of Peter Rabbit). The Goosebumps sequel is scheduled to haunt theaters on October 12th, 2018, so if all goes according to plan we'll have a new Goosebumps movie and a new Halloween film to look forward to this Halloween season. Like the first film, the sequel is based on R.L. Stine's Goosebumps book series, which originally ran from 1992–1997 and still continues with new releases today.
Variety previously reported that Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ken Jeong, and Chris Parnell had been cast in the Goosebumpssequel. The trio of comedic actors join a cast that already included Madison Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Ben O’Brien (Manchester by the Sea), Caleel Harris (Castle Rock), and Jeremy Ray Taylor...

No Jack Black in Goosebumps 2, but we have a new group of kids led by It star Jeremy Ray Taylor and Caleel Harris (Castle Rock).
In the sequel, two kids (Taylor and Harris) wander into Stine’s old house — “I don’t think this house is giving out candy,” says one. Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Madison Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Chris Parnell (Archer), and Ken Jeong (Dr. Ken) round out the cast. Sandel directs from a script by Rod Lieber. Neal H. Moritz produces via his Original Film shingle,...

Universal has released a unique first trailer for “Mortal Engines,” depicting a world of predator cities existing thousands of years after current civilization has been destroyed by a cataclysmic event.
“We have to stop London before it destroys us” is one of the lines in the FX-heavy footage, released Tuesday.
Peter Jackson is on board as a producer and screenwriter, re-teaming with “Hobbit” screenwriters with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens in “Mortal Engines,” set in a steampunk world where entire cities have been mounted on wheels and prey on one another. It’s Jackson’s first feature project since the completion of the Hobbit trilogy in 2014.
Robert Sheehan stars as museum apprentice Tom Natsworthy from the city of London who finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive assassin Hester Shaw, played by Hera Hilmar, who’s out to avenge the death of her mother.
