Director Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” takes place 300 years after the death of Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the previous “Planet of Apes” trilogy, when humanity lost the wars and Apes ruled the world for generations. With the fourth installment, Ball wanted to push visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist and the Wētā FX performance capture team well past their prior achievements.
The Caesar trilogy featured a mix of human and ape characters, with many apes using sign language to communicate. In “Kingdom,” humans take a back seat with 12 new ape leads that walk-and-talk like Aaron Sorkin characters. Ball also envisioned it as a road film with Noa (Owen Teague) crossing an ever-changing landscape to find his abducted clan.
Dating back to “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011), the franchise always pushed performance capture beyond the soundstage but production still centered around carefully prepped principal exterior sets.

Elon Musk, who seems to consider himself a comedian, has opined that “The most entertaining outcome is the most likely.”
So it seemed reasonable to ask Grok, the artificial-intelligence chatbot from Musk’s xAI startup that last month became public to all users on X (née Twitter): Who would be the most hilarious actor to portray Elon Musk in your opinion?
The answer from Grok: Sacha Baron Cohen, the British comedic actor known for “Borat,” “Brüno” and his Ali G rude-boy character. One reason, according to the AI bot, is the surprise factor: Casting Baron Cohen “would be unexpected in a way that would generate buzz. Fans might not see it coming, and the contrast between Cohen’s usual characters and Musk’s tech mogul persona could provide a comedic goldmine,” Grok said.
Last year came news that a biopic of Musk, to be directed by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes wouldn’t seem to owe an obvious debt to the films of James Cameron. But key special effects in the latest simian adventure couldn’t have happened without Weta FX’s creations for the Oscar-winning Avatar: The Way of Water.
“The Water Solver we used came off the back of that movie and had a good half-dozen years of concentrated research and development into water simulation. So coming into the project, that was one of the aspects of this film that I wasn’t as concerned about,” says visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist.
While the building blocks for the effects were there, pulling off director Wes Ball’s vision required “a different mix” of the water itself. “The ferocity and turbulence of the water is very different from what was done with Avatar. This gave us opportunities to add improvements to that tool set,...

The first half of 2024 was pretty unkind to a lot of movies. The box office was on life support for most of that period and it all felt kind of bleak for anyone who pays attention to such things. The most depressing part was that quite a few great movies were being hung out to dry, including "The Fall Guy" and "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," among others. "Abigail," the latest horror movie from the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, was also a big disappointment theatrically. Fortunately though, it's finally finding its audience.
"Abigail" is currently streaming on Prime Video and, as of this writing, is sitting in the number four spot on Amazon's most-watched movies chart (via FlixPatrol). It's currently only trailing Mark Wahlberg's 2021 sci-fi flop "Infinite" (which also recently found new life on Prime Video), Nancy Meyers' perennial 2006 rom-com "The Holiday,...

“What a wonderful day!”
So says bonobo Proximus as he riles up his crowd of ape sycophants willing to do his bidding. It’s a key introduction to the character in this summer’s blockbuster hit “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” — and one that wouldn’t have had nearly as much impact without the careful detail that went into translating human actor Kevin Durand’s performance through motion capture technology.
On November 2 at Nya West in Hollywood, Durand, director Wes Ball, and Visual Effects Supervisor Erik Winquist joined moderator and VP, Features Strategy Chris O’Falt for a panel discussion at IndieWire’s inaugural Future of Filmmaking Summit. The chat, presented by Walt Disney Studios, took a deep dive on the technology used to expand this already legendary IP, while at the same time honoring what came before.

It’s shaping up to be a Huston family Christmas.
Siblings and Hollywood royalty Anjelica and Danny Huston are teaming on a new project, The Christmas Witch Trial of La Befana, a hybrid animated and live-action feature film that is currently shooting in Los Angeles and Ontario, Canada.
HighballTV confirmed the details of the film, which was written by David James Brock and HighballTV’s Melissa D’Agostino based on an idea they conceived with Matt Campagna who is also directing with D’Agostino, a frequent creative partner. Johnathan Sharp is producing.
The plot follows a peculiar court case that unspools after the children in a rural Italian village kidnap their legendary Christmas witch, played by Huston, and put her on trial in an attempt to stop her annual judgment from their lives. Apes together strong indeed! After earning close to $400 million bananas with the Wes Ball-directed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, news about another movie in the evolutionary franchise is swinging our way! According to 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell, another Apes film is in the works for a 2027 release. Details about the project are scarce. However, it’s a fair assumption to think it’s a sequel to Ball’s box-office blockbuster, starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, William H. Macy, and more.

Performance capture is one of the most exciting new tools available to filmmakers this century. But, if you’re an up and coming cinematic storyteller, how can you use it in your own filmmaking? IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit, taking place in Los Angeles on November 2 has you covered.
We are honored to welcome the team behind this year’s blockbuster smash, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” for a dynamic panel about the ins-and-outs of performance capture. At the heart of the conversation will be how they used these innovative tools to elicit profound emotion, to create deep connections between the film’s characters and the audience. Roger Ebert always said movies are an empathy machine: The performance capture artistry in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” showed how true that is.

Though horror films are released all year round, the Halloween season in October is really the time to celebrate all things dark and creepy.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Halloween isn’t always about things being scary. Sometimes things can just be gross and silly, and the Beetlejuice sequel from Tim Burton delivers a great return to his kooky depiction of the afterlife.
Wednesday star Jenna Ortega takes over the role of the dark gothic girl that was played by Winona Ryder in the original, and the movie also gives some interesting backstory to Beetlejuice as a character and why...

To the outside observer it may seem like every single year is called “one of the best years for horror ever,” but I’m going to let you in on a little secret: It’s never a bad year for horror. The entertainment industry damn near runs on scary movies, which are cheap to produce and able to take artistic risks that bigger budget genre films — the ones that have to sell tickets to everybody just to break in — are too timid to even consider. You can always find great horror movies. The trick is knowing where to look.
And that right there is the trick, because smaller movies don’t have huge advertising budgets, and they don’t drive traffic so publications can’t always allocate the resources to cover them. Great horror movies fall through the cracks all the time. Heck, even major theatrical releases don’t get...

“Lost” premiered on ABC on Sept. 22, 2004, but one of its key players didn’t appear until Season 2: Villain-you-love-to-hate Benjamin Linus, played with spooky intensity by Michael Emerson.
Among the biggest questions on the show, along with what was the black smoke and what was in the hatch, was whether the castaways of Flight 815 could trust a stranger they found in the jungle who claimed to be a stranded balloonist named Henry Gale. Spoiler: No. His real name was Benjamin Linus and they could never trust that slippery weasel.
On the show’s 20th anniversary, TheWrap spoke with Emerson about the “magic” of the show’s night-time shoots, his favorite scene partner and how his role — which was originally just a three-episode guest shot — became a pivotal part of the series.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball peeled back the curtain on Wētā FX‘s Oscar-worthy VFX in “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut,” a full-length, split-screen comparison between the final cut of the film and a version with unfinished VFX. Featuring optional commentary by Ball, editor Dan Zimmerman, and production VFX supervisor Erik Winquist, “The Raw Cut” appears on the supplemental Blu-ray in the 4K Ultra HD set available now.
This VFX deep dive is a first for the “Apes” franchise (which has yet to win the coveted VFX Oscar). “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” from director Wes Ball, will hit Hulu in the U.S. on Aug. 2. The fourth chapter in the “Apes” reboot franchise from 20th Century Studios is set several generations in the future following Caesar’s reign.
In the movie, apes are living harmoniously as the dominant species — and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape named Noa undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. The cast of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” includes Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, William H. Macy and Peter Macon.

20th Century Studios gave the Maze Runner trilogy director Wes Ball’s addition to the Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (read our review Here), a digital release earlier this month, and the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release is scheduled for August 27th – but before we get there, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will begin streaming on the Hulu service as of August 2nd! All nine prior films in the series are also streaming on Hulu, so fans will have the chance to binge-watch the entire Planet of the Apes franchise there!
The story of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set many years after the conclusion of War for the Planet of the Apes. Many apes societies have grown from when the Moses-like Caesar brought his people to an oasis, while humans have been reduced to a feral-like existence.

Lately, David Harbour has donned several superhero roles with his 2019 Hellboy, MCU’s Black Widow, and the upcoming Creature Commandos in the Dcu. However, his foray into the superhero world could have been years ago, had he not messed up his X-Men audition. The Stranger Things star revealed that he went so far with the X-Men audition, that it even left the director concerned.

Sink your teeth into Abigail when the acclaimed 2024 horror comedy makes its way to Peacock later this month. For those who have been waiting patiently for the vampire film to make its streaming debut, you won't have to wait much longer! Abigail drops on Peacock on Friday, July 19.
Releasing theatrically on April 19 (after making its initial debut at the Overlook Film Festival on April 7), Abigail will have taken exactly three months to stream, which is about par for the course with most theatrical-to-streaming debuts nowadays.

Peacock's release times aren't as strict as Netflix's usual 12 a.m. Pt/3 a.m. Et, but I imagine Abigail will be available that Friday morning, making Abigail the ideal Friday or Saturday night movie pick for those looking to relax and enjoy something entertaining without venturing out to the cinema.
