"The Simpsons" writers may have predicted some pretty improbably future events, but even they couldn't have anticipated some guest appearances that didn't just age poorly, but festered within the cracks of one of the most essential and influential television shows ever made. Throughout its 36 seasons, 781 episodes, and one feature-length film, there have been notable guest star appearances that may have been hilarious at the time, but became anything but.
In addition to the various "Simpsons" jokes that have aged poorly, some cameos have become truly uncomfortable, and now land with all the comedic impact of a fingernail extraction. After reviewing the series, here are the worst cameos in the show's history. These appearances remind us that convicted felons, despised public figures, and unsuccessful sports icons alike have made a stop in Springfield, hoping for a memorable visit that ultimately became forever tainted due to real-life events. In some cases, where a "D'oh!

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Alone Again, Natura-Diddly", the Simpsons discover a new outdoor auto racing track inside their favorite nature preserve and decide to stay and watch a race or two. Indeed, many recognizable characters are there, including Ned Flanders (Harry Shearer) and his wife Maude (Marcia Mitzman Gaven), who sit in the back row. In between races, cheerleaders take to the track and use a t-shirt cannon to fire free clothing into the stands. Tragically, one of the errant t-shirts strikes Maude in the chest, throwing her over the back railing of the stadium. She plunges to her death, landing in the parking lot below.
The rest of the episode follows Ned's grieving process as he mourns the loss of his wife. Ned, perhaps shockingly, even finds his faith in God shaken over the tragedy; ordinarily, Ned is ultra-Christian.

One of the remarkable things about "The Simpsons" was how quickly the show built enough cultural cache to attract big-name guest stars. As early as its first season, Albert Brooks was playing French bowling instructor Jacques in "Life on the Fast Lane." Since then, celebrities have continued to flock to the series, to the extent that the best guest stars on "The Simpsons" include some of the most well-known and influential cultural figures of the last three decades.
From A-list actors such as Michelle Pfeiffer and Dustin Hoffman to musical legends such as Johnny Cash, the show has drawn talent from across the cultural sphere — though Bruce Springsteen still refuses to cameo in "The Simpsons." But even Bruce Springsteen isn't as tough to get as two of producer Al Jean's dream cameos. These two figures are just as prestigious as anyone else who's appeared on "The Simpsons," but there...

"The Simpsons" has no shortage of memorable characters, but many of them are voiced by the same stable of actors who voice the main cast. Harry Shearer, Hank Azaria, and Dan Castellaneta are immensely talented voice actors, but sometimes, a role comes along that needs someone else to take the wheel.
There are some common reasons why celebrities agree to guest star on "The Simpsons." But even if they're only doing it because their kids made them, they can still make an impact, even if their character is never seen again after a single appearance. Whether they were simply funny or profoundly affected a member of the main cast, these celebrity cameos weren't just gimmicks. They helped change the DNA of the sitcom.

Back to the Future 4 might never get made, but there is an official sequel to the original Back to the Future trilogy that made Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown the star of the franchise. Robert Zemeckis has made it perfectly clear that he’s not interested in continuing the Back to the Future series with a fourth movie, and he won’t let any other filmmaker or money-grubbing studio do it for him. This is probably for the best — those legacy sequels rarely work out — but it is a shame that this story is over.
It would’ve been a joy to see Doc and Marty McFly share the screen one last time for one last time-traveling adventure. The franchise has continued in the form of video games and a stage musical, but none of them have been a direct continuation of the cinematic saga; it’s not the same...

"One Piece" is one of the longest-running anime series of all time, a truly legendary show worthy of its reputation. Based on the manga of the same name by Eiichiro Oda, "One Piece" is still going strong after 25 years, becoming a cultural institution. And after all that time, the show is better than ever. The latest story arc, "Egghead Island Arc" even made it to our list of best anime of the year. There's never been a better time to be a "One Piece" fan, between the anime, the live-action show, and the upcoming Netflix animated remake. With still plenty of source material to go, it could be several years before we see the end of "One Piece."
And yet, the anime just suffered a big shakedown, one that has fans devastated. After nearly 20 years, one of the Straw Hats is disembarking the ship and saying goodbye to the show.

In the "The Simpsons" episode "How I Spend My Strummer Vacation", Homer (Dan Castellaneta) is caught on camera, drunkenly confessing that having a family never allowed him to realize his dreams of becoming a rock star. His family hears the confession and, while angry, also understand that many of Homer's dreams are indeed stifled by his domestic existence. As a favor, they enroll him in a sleepaway rock 'n' roll camp run by the Rolling Stones.
Homer gets to interact with the camp's many celebrity counselors, all of them playing themselves. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards lay out the syllabus for the camp: Campers are to take singing and guitar/bass/drum lessons, and will, at the end of the week, put on a show. The counselors include Brian Setzer, Lenny Kravitz, and Elvis Costello. The lyrics workshop is taught by Tom Petty.

When Matt Groening's "The Simpsons" debuted during the Christmas season of 1989, it was an immediate sensation. Some fans might have known the Simpsons characters from their appearances on "The Tracey Ullman Show," and readers of local indie newspapers likely knew of Groening's "Life in Hell" comic strip, but for most audiences, "The Simpsons" was a bolt from the blue. It was an anti-sitcom, a surreal show with weirdly designed characters (yellow skin?) that satirized and deconstructed the middle-class wholesomeness of mainstream 1980s television. It was an antidote to the ultra-conservative "family values" crowd that was so noisy during the Reagan administration. And audiences were ready for it.
"The Simpsons" started big and only got bigger. The year 1990 was big for pop culture, as "The Simpsons" -- along with shows like "Seinfeld" and "Married... with Children" -- undid old tropes and invented new ones. One might even be so bold...

“The Simpsons” and Christmas just go together.
There have been so many Christmas-themed episodes in the history of the series that there’s an entire collection dedicated to them on Disney+.
And there’s a new Christmas-themed “Simpsons” special for this year. That’s right – “O C’mon All Ye Faithful” is the first double-sized episode and it is, of course, built around the holidays., comes to Springfield to film a documentary – “A Derren Brown Christmas.” After Homer (Dan Castellaneta) admits to being a lousy gift-giver, Brown tries to hypnotize him but it backfires and Homer imagines himself to be Santa Claus. (Ralph Wiggum is his elf sidekick.) When Homer is outed as a fraud, it leads to a spiritual crisis in Ned Flanders (Harry Shearer). It is both very funny and surprisingly emotional.

It’s common for animated shows to release a Christmas episode during the festive period, but some are more of a standout than others. Most of the best animated TV shows ever typically have an episode that focuses on the holiday season, although they’re not always set in the safety and warmth of the characters’ homes. Adult animated shows like Rick and Morty or Family Guy are just as keen to broadcast a Christmas episode as children’s titles like SpongeBob SquarePants, which proves that regardless of background, the holiday season can be enjoyed by anyone.
Christmas is a chaotic season, as many of the best Christmas episodes from great TV shows highlight to viewers time and time again. Whether it’s a mad dash to get a Christmas tree or an action-packed fight against a festive threat, these animated TV shows provide some amazing and endearing Christmas episodes...

In the "Simpsons" episode "Insane Clown Poppy", Bart (Nancy Cartwright) and Homer (Dan Castellaneta) are playing with fireworks and accidentally destroy the interior of Lisa's bedroom. To make it up to Lisa (Yeardley Smith), Homer takes the family to a local book fair, something Lisa gets very excited about. In attendance at the fair are multiple celebrity authors, including Amy Tan and John Updike, who give cameo performances as themselves. Amusingly, when Tom Wolfe's clean white suit is stained, he rips it away like a stripper costume to reveal another clean white suit underneath.
Also at the fair is Stephen King, who, like Tan and Updike, was game enough to voice himself. Marge (Julie Kavner) asks if King is working on a new horror novel, and King says no and that he has instead pivoted to a biography of Benjamin Franklin. Naturally, when King begins describing Franklin's life,...

The Simpsons have welcomed a number of big name guest stars over the years — from Paul McCartney, to Meryl Streep, to ‘80s pop superstar [Redacted]. But the actor who drew the most interest and awe from The Simpsons staff was an aging TV star who was arguably at the lowest point of his entire career.
A highlight of Season Four’s “Mr. Plow” came when Homer and his family attend the Springfield car show, and encounter a wistful, vaguely embittered Adam West, who bemoans the current state of the Batman franchise before spontaneously breaking into the Batusi.
This memorable cameo only came about because Simpsons writer Jon Vitti decided that he would really like to hang out with Batman. “I wanted to do a winter episode,” Vitti told The Hollywood Reporter, “and then it occurred to me that if Homer bought a snow plow, we could have him go to the car show,...

The premiere of the 36th season of "The Simpsons" was novel. Matt Groening's animated sitcom has been airing for so long -- so ... so long! -- that audiences have frequently begun to wonder how the zeitgeist-defining hit should come to an end. Will it tap out at season 40? At 50? And if so, how would the series actually close? Perhaps to take the pressure off, the showrunners decided that the premiere of season 36 should be a preemptive series finale, giving a retrospective of the entire "Simpsons" oeuvre before the show actually ends. The episode, called "Bart's Birthday," was presented as an awards-show-style screening, projected in a theater stuffed with celebrities ("Weird Al" Yankovic! Penn & Teller! The Unknown Comic!). Conan O'Brien, playing himself, hosted the finale in wistful terms, bidding farewell to the long-running series.

All good things must eventually come to an end. Even though "The Simpsons," which is now in its 36th season that included a fake finale, isn't ending, a key cast member of the show who has been there for 35 years is saying goodbye. Pamela Hayden, the voice behind characters such as Milhouse, Jimbo Jones, and many others, has announced her retirement from the classic animated series. Her final appearance airs in a matter of days. The show will then have to soldier on without her.
Hayden's final appearance will be in this week's episode "Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes." The announcement was made with a tribute video (which you can check out below). It features Hayden sharing her love for Milhouse in particular, as well as some of the other characters she's voiced on "The Simpsons" over the years. According to Deadline, Fox is going to...

Everything’s coming up Milhouse — including retirement.
After 35 years of exceptional service to the comedy community, legendary voice actress Pamela Hayden has announced her imminent retirement from The Simpsons. Like many of the original Simpsons voice actors, Hayden, 70, plays numerous roles on the show, including Jimbo Jones, Rod (and sometimes Todd) Flanders and the fan-favorite elementary school sad sack Milhouse Van Houten, best known for his bone-dry cuffs and unrequited love of Lisa Simpson that leads him to dangerous places.
Hayden’s final performance on The Simpsons will be in this Sunday’s new episode “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,” and, to celebrate Hayden’s many years of hard work and dedication, the official Simpsons Twitter account posted a touching tribute. Today, everybody likes Milhouse.
In a statement for Deadline, Hayden further expressed her gratitude for the gig that lasted for most of her career in voice acting,...

The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to The Simpsons?not easily. Matt Groening has been asked many times as to why he chose to make the Simpsons yellow, and he typically responds with some version of "I wanted them to look unique." For its first few seasons, "The Simpsons" were considered very strange and outré. Despite their popularity, they had a subversive, cynical punk sensibility that came to inform the art of the decade that followed. After enough time, though, the yellowness of the Simpsons became a widely accepted facet of their design, and they stopped looking quite as striking. Just as one might stop noticing that Mickey Mouse wears gloves, or Donald Duck has no pants.
The color scheme of "The Simpsons" was always a little odd. The walls of the Simpsons' house, for instance, are pink, as is the Simpsons family car. Their TV is purple, and their carpets are a deep teal. Bart always wore teal shorts and a blood orange shirt,...

Philip J. Fry (Billy West) is the hero of "Futurama," but his robot buddy Bender (John Dimaggio) is the show's star. A crass alcoholic "lovable scamp" (read: sociopath), Bender is to "Futurama" what Homer is on "The Simpsons."
"Futurama" takes place in the 31st century, and this future is filled with plenty more charming robots than only Bender. From acting unit Calculon (Maurice Lamarche) to the Robot Devil, some of the funniest characters in "Futurama" have silicon souls.
No one can accuse "Futurama" of being written by Isaac Asimov, but many episodes of the show explore Bender's existence as a robot too. In "Fear Of A Bot Planet," the characters visit a planet that is Bender's paradise (a planet of robots who want to kill all humans). "Obsoluely Fabulous" sees Bender befriend several outmoded robots while he himself deals with fears of obsolescence.

The following contains mild spoilers for The Simpsons season 36 episode 5, "Treehouse of Horror Xxxv," now streaming on HuluA recurring guest actor on The Simpsons' has become crucial to the show, and his role in the show's Venom parody proves it. While most of Springfield is voiced by the show's cast of Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Harry Shearer, and Hank Azaria, other actors like Maggie Roswell have brought their own consistent vibes to the show. This is on top of the impressive legacy of deceased actors like Phil Hartman, Marcia Wallace and Russi Taylor, who brought an indeniable character to Springfield and the Simpsons family tree.
A frequent guest star in recent seasons of the show has become a crucial figure within the show's ecosystem, playing a number of minor roles while taking over some long-standing ones in the process. This actor is central to season 36's "Treehouse of Horror Xxxv,...

“The Simpsons” has been in an experimental mode as of late, trying big swings like its “series finale” Season 36 premiere and its recent, spot-on parody of “The White Lotus.” This week, the show is once again playing with its format — via the sketch comedy-inspired “Women in Shorts” episode.
Variety has a first look (scroll down below) at one of the bits. Rather than a single storyline, the “Women in Shorts” episode will contain around 15 different vignettes. Writer Christine Nangle, who penned the episode, has a sketch background and hails from the Upright Citizens Brigade, so trying it on “The Simpsons” made sense.
“Our showrunner, Matt Selman, has been really encouraging us to take risks and break format a little bit more,” Nangle said. “I thought it would be cool to do an episode that feels a little bit like a sketch show, and delving into the lives of the women of the town.

Academy Award-winning director Robert Zemeckis has revealed that he is interested in making a new Back to the Future movie, though it would have a major twist. Zemeckis helmed all three movies in the Back to the Future trilogy, which premiered between 1985 and 1990, following the continued adventures of mad scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and his teenage companion Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox). The trilogy was a massive success, cumulatively earning more than $950 million at the box office, though Zemeckis has previously stated that he has no interest in helming a fourth installment in the franchise.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote his new film, Here, Zemeckis was asked if there was anything that he'd like to tackle before he retires, such as a genre that he hadn't worked in before, or an actor that he hadn't worked with yet. The director responded by saying...

When the Cincinnati Bengals take on the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 9, you may be surprised to see some new players on the field in the form of Bart and Homer Simpson.
That’s because in addition to the regular “Monday Night Football” telecast, ESPN+ and Disney+ will be offering a live, animated recreation of the game with “The Simpsons Funday Football.”
The House of Mouse dropped a teaser for the state-of-the-art sporting experience during halftime of Monday’s game. While the clip only shows Bart siding with the Bengals and Homer backing the Cowboys, the December game promises many more appearances from Springfield — including Krusty, Nelson, Milhouse, Ralph, Carl, Barney, Lenny and Moe. Plus, Marge and Lisa will be interviewing players on the sideline, while Maggie operates the skycam. Watch the video below:

After throwing characters from Marvel and Toy Story into its ongoing battle to lure young viewers to its increasingly expensive sports telecasts, Disney’s ESPN is really bringing in the big guns.
Characters from the long-running animated series “The Simpsons” will join a December 9th “Monday Night Football” game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys in an animated “alterna-cast” that will stream on Disney+, ESPN+ and NFL+ while the usual traditional broadcast airs on ESPN. In the kids’ version of the game, Bart Simpson will play at times for the Bengals and his father, Homer, will fight for the Cowboys, while sister Lisa and mother Marge will interview players while baby Maggie operates the sky-cam.
Longtime “Simpsons” voice actors Hank Azaria, Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner and Yeardley Smith will voice several of their characters in prerecorded bits and sketches.

A Monday Night Football matchup later this season will feature two familiar characters, Bart and Homer Simpson, in the decidedly unfamiliar context of a live NFL football game.
The alternate, animated telecast of the December 9 showdown between the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys will feature a fully immersive Simpsons experience conveying the actual on-field action. It will be brought to life by writers and voice talent from the long-running Fox animated series, whose characters and library became the property of ESPN parent Disney in 2019. Bart Simpson may soon have a new catchphrase in his repertoire: “Don’t have a Cowboy, man.”
The Walt Disney Co., the NFL and ESPN and teaming up to debut another animated alternative broadcast of an upcoming NFL game, but this time they are going big with “ESPN’s The Simpsons Funday Football.”
On Dec. 9, Disney+ and ESPN+ will stream the Dallas Cowboys-Cincinnati Bengals matchup, but it will take place in Springfield’s Atoms Stadium, with all the players replaced by dozens of animated characters based on those from the Fox and Disney+ series The Simpsons.
It will be the second year in a row that Disney+ will stream an animated version of an NFL game, but this year’s game will be bigger on multiple fronts: For starters, it is a Monday Night Football matchup, not a Sunday morning game like last year’s Toy Story game.

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Lisa's Substitute" the second-grade teacher at Springfield Elementary, Miss Hoover (Maggie Roswell), takes a leave of absence to heal from a bout of Lyme disease, and she is replaced by a substitute teacher named Mr. Bergstrom. Mr. Bergstrom is an amazing teacher, far better than the cynical and detached Miss Hoover. On his first day, he strides into the classroom dressed as a cowboy, and encourages the students to find mistakes or anachronisms in his outfit. The hyper-intelligent Lisa (Yeardley Smith) spots four mistakes, immediately causing the child and the teacher to bond.
Lisa, as "The Simpsons" repeatedly points out, rarely receives the intellectual stimulation she requires. She's tenacious and alert, but has to live with a flippant, underachieving brother and doltish, incurious father. In the show's most persistent streak of cynicism, the bright-eyed Lisa will always go unacknowledged and underappreciated. When she has a conversation with Mr.

In the "The Simpsons" episode "Brother from the Same Planet", Homer (Dan Castellaneta) forgets about Bart (Nancy Cartwright) at soccer practice, leaving him to wait for many hours. Bart, as he often does, accuses Homer of being a terrible father, and seeks revenge by submitting his name to the Bigger Brother agency (a riff on Big Brothers Big Sisters of America) hoping to find a new temporary guardian to care for him. Bart is paired with a charming, caring man named Tom (Phil Hartman), an ultra-cool test pilot. Tom is gentle and attentive, and Bart enjoys the time they spend together. Bart eventually starts to feel guilty, though, when he realizes Tom's time could be spent caring for a more disadvantaged child than he.
As one might be able to intuit from watching the episode, Tom was meant to be played by a visiting celebrity, and Hartman, ever the professional,...
