Clive Barker's "Hellraiser" is a modest family drama about Faustian pacts, mysterious puzzle boxes that summon demons, and a wicked stepmother who smooches her skinless brother-in-law in a basement. It also paved the way for an ambitious franchise that's traveled everywhere from New York to outer space. Granted, some poorly received sequels have resulted in the "Hellraiser" movies ranking all over the pleasure and pain scale, but the series still has such sights to show us. The fifth film, "Hellraiser: Inferno," also marked Scott Derrickson's directorial debut, but the project was different before the future Marvel filmmaker took over.

The "Hellraiser" direct-to-video sequels don't have the best reputation among horror fans, as most of them are low-budget afterthoughts that were churned out so Miramax could retain the rights to the franchise. That said, "Inferno" is a compelling noir-inspired...

American Zoetrope's filmography is kind of mind-boggling. Co-founded by "Movie Brats" Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas in 1969, the distributor and production company has stayed pretty true to its mission statement of backing not just projects by Coppola and his family, but also experimental and international cinema. The list of directors that've had American Zoetrope in their corner at some point or another is just as extraordinary. There's Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, Wim Wenders, Paul Schrader, Agnieszka Holland, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, Godfrey Reggio, Carroll Ballard, and, of course, Tim Burton. Wait, what?

It's true: At the peak of his powers in the 1990s, the ringmaster of the "macabre funhouse" (as /Film's Bj Colangelo has aptly put it) teamed up with Coppola's American Zoetrope for 1999's "Sleepy Hollow." 

When you think about it, it's not so surprising that Coppola got in on Burton's creep-tastical revamp of Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Update: Last year, Arrow Video released the first four Hellraiser films in a 4K box set called Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment. That box set is now making its way to North America, with a release date of October 22nd in the US and Canada! A couple years ago, screenwriter Peter Atkins – who worked on the scripts for the first three Hellraiser sequels – published his original screenplay for the famously troubled fourth film, Hellraiser: Bloodline (the script is available for purchase at This Link), saying, “Whilst you’ll never get to see a Director’s Cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline, you can read in this book what was supposed to be…” But...

Earlier this year, we caught word that Arrow Video’s 4K box set release of the first four Hellraiser movies (get it Here) would include a workprint cut of the 1996 installment, Hellraiser: Bloodline (watch that one Here), allowing fans the chance to see what the movie was going to be like before Dimension Films started tinkering with it. Now that the Arrow Video box set is available, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek has a copy of the Hellraiser: Bloodline workprint – and in the video embedded above, he offers his review of this cut of the film, comparing it to the theatrical version we’ve been watching for over twenty-five years. Hellraiser: Bloodline was a famously troubled production, with director Kevin Yagher leaving the project when distributor Miramax / Dimension demanded substantial reshoots. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers...

The fourth installment of the Hellraiser franchise, Hellraiser: Bloodline, was the last film of the series to be released theatrically. It was also notorious for its troubled production, eventually leading director Kevin Yagher to walk away when Miramax demanded reshoots. Miramax then brought in Joe Chappelle to complete the film.

When Yagher saw the finished cut of Hellraiser: Bloodline, post reshoots, it’d become so removed from his vision that he had his name removed from the credits using the Alan Smithee pseudonym, as did Chappelle. While Yagher’s version of the prequel/sequel is lost to time, Arrow’s Hellraiser: Bloodline Workprint assembles the footage Yagher shot, offering fans the closest we’ll ever get to a Director’s Cut. Arrow’s workprint makes for a more coherent and fascinating version of the troubled franchise installment.

Bloody Disgusting has learned the sad news this week that Waxwork (1988) director Anthony Hickox, who was prolific in the ’80s and ’90s, has passed away at the age of 64 years old.

Deadline reports, “Hickox had spent his recent years in Romania, where police found him dead last week at his house in Bucharest after friends had reported not seeing him for some time, according to close friend and InterTalent Rights Group CEO Jonathan Shalit.”

In addition to Waxwork, a favorite among the staff here at Bloody Disgusting, Anthony Hickox also directed the film’s only sequel, Waxwork II: Lost in Time (1992).

Hickox also directed a slew of other horror movies around the same time, including the Bruce Campbell-starring Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1989), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), and Warlock: The Armageddon (1993), as well as the 1990s films Full Eclipse (1993), Payback (1995), Invasion of Privacy (1996), and Storm Catcher (1999).

The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.

On March 8, 1996, the fourth film in the "Hellraiser" film series, "Hellraiser: Bloodline," was released in theaters. It purported to be the final film in the series, as it would feature the death of Pinhead (Doug Bradley), the demonic sadomasochist summoned from the rough sex dimension via an elaborate magical puzzle box. 

"Bloodline" took an impressively ambitious narrative tack, taking place over three time periods, several centuries removed from one another. It began in 1796 with the original maker of the puzzle box, then fast-forwarded to the present and caught up with Pinhead and a descendent of the puzzle-maker. Its third act took place in 2127 on board a space station where Pinhead would be summoned to torture astronauts. 

At the time, "Hellraiser: Bloodline" was largely dismissed by audiences. It didn't get good reviews, and many looked askance at the idea of Pinhead in space. It came at a time when several horror...

Released in 1996, and co-directed by makeup effects artist Kevin Yagher and Joe Chappelle, fourth franchise installment Hellraiser: Bloodline served the dual role of being a prequel and a sequel, telling a centuries-spanning story that documents the puzzle box’s beginning and end. While horror fans have come to appreciate the ambitious “Pinhead in Space” movie in recent years, it’s the behind the scenes drama of the production that often takes center stage.

For starters, Kevin Yagher was replaced by Joe Chappelle before production was completed, and both filmmakers ultimately declined to have their names attached to the finished product.

That’s why Hellraiser: Bloodline is credited to the fake director “Alan Smithee.”

The character now known as Pinhead first appeared in Clive Barker's 1986 novel "The Hellbound Heart," as merely one of a small group of supernatural sadomasochists from beyond the grave. A character named Frank, a sexual hedonist on a mad search for the ultimate sensual experience, solves a mystical puzzle box that magically summons threatening, leather-clad beings called Cenobites. The Cenobites have long since shed their humanity in devotion to S&m-inflected sensory overload which requires their bodies to be in a constant state of mutilation. The Pinhead Cenobite, not expressly male or female, was described thus:

"Its voice, unlike that of its companion, was light and breathy -- the voice of an excited girl. Every inch of its head had been tattooed with an intricate grid, and at every intersection of horizontal and vertical axes a jeweled pin driven through to the bone. Its tongue was similarly decorated."

The Film Detective has released one of their most ambitious film sets to date with The Sherlock Holmes Vault Collection. The set features three of the five films made between the years 1931-1937 starring Arthur Wontner as world’s greatest super sleuth. Having been told he resembled Doyle's creation for years, Wontner was finally cast in the role for The Sleeping Cardinal (released under its American title as Sherlock Holmes' Fatal Hour in this box set) in 1931. Produced by Twickenham Studios, Fatal Hour was loosely based on "The Adventure of the Empty House" (a short story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) with the noticeable change that in the film version, Ronald Adair is a card cheat. Wontner was joined by Ian Fleming as Doctor Watson and Philip Hewland as Inspector Lestrade. Sherlock Holmes' Fatal Hour played rather well and was considered a success.

Mark Alan Miller and his creative team at Encyclopocalypse have been bringing horror books to life with compelling audio versions, and now the company is expanding with the launch of a publishing imprint for original content and movie novelizations, including Fright Night and Re-Animator:

Miller announced this week that his company Encyclopocalypse, which specializes in audio adaptations of notable works of horror literature, will be expanding into publishing books itself under a new expansion that will encompass both paperback and e-books.

The move came about partially as a result of Encyclopcoalyse acquiring the audio rights to John Skipp and Craig Spector’s novelization of Fright Night, the classic 1985 horror comedy starring Roddy McDowell and Chris Sarandon.

Arrow certainly pull out all the stops when it comes to their Blu-rays, from 2K restorations to packaging together special features and exclusive new material. Special makeup supremo Robert Kurtzman directs this 1997 homage to 1980s horror, and while its gross-out effects are impressive, the plot, characters and script leave much to be desired.

Wishmaster opens in 12th century Persia, and a royal party in chaos: people are mutating, skinning themselves, turning inside out, that sort of thing. It seems the king has made a deal with a Djinn, a mythical demon who will grant three wishes. On the third wish, a portal will open and the Djinn (plural) will be unleashed and take over the world of men. Or something. Thankfully, this Djinn is banished thanks to an opal made of blood.

Bayona’s heartbreaking modern fable, A Monster Calls, to both Blu-ray and DVD this week, and if you're a cult film fan, then you have a few fun movies to look forward to adding to your home collections: Witchtrap, Venom, and the four-film collection for Wishmaster, a new addition to the Vestron Video Collector’s Series.

Other notable releases for March 28th include Mortuary Massacre, The Abduction of Jennifer Grayson, Park Chan-Wook's The Handmaiden (which finally gets the Blu-ray treatment), and for the little monster fans, Monster High: Electrified.

There are rumors that Lionsgate’s fantastic Vestron Video line of remastered, supplement-filled Blu-rays celebrating horror films from the ’80s and ’90s may be closing up shop. It’s unconfirmed, and LG themselves have been mum on the subject, but it would be an unfortunate turn of events for genre fans if true. They’re only nine releases in, but already they’ve done tremendous work with fantastic new editions of fun classics like Chopping Mall, Waxwork, and The Gate.

Way back in the distant past, a gaggle of my ghoulish gang would huddle around the ol’ cathode ray tube and blast our eyeballs with all manner of vicious visuals that were contained in these magical black rectangles called VHS tapes. Yes, the book reviews continue with sequels. Dark Delicacies II was originally released in 2007, followed by Dark Delicacies III in 2009. Dark Delicacies II is a horror anthology, with a total of eighteen stories, from various authors (listed above). Del Howison is the editor of this novel and he is also the owner of a horror curiousity store in Burbank, California. Full of tales of demonic dogs, zombie wars, cursed violins and much, much more, Dark Delicacies II is a bloody good time, with only a few stumbling missteps.
