Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the...

From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

Back in 1989 a horror anthology series hit HBO network and took the horror world by storm. Maybe you heard of it? Doesn’t ring a bell? Its intro is made of nightmare fuel as the camera treks through its main gate, which ascends to a broken-down, deteriorated mansion as lightning cackles through the night sky. We enter this amusement park of horrors, cobwebs draped alongside the walls, creeks and strange noises echoing about, eerie atmosphere soaking up the screen, and we enter a false trap door. Now when I was younger, I think I was close to shitting my pants because here or there as we descend down these stairs into this abyss, and we go through a room here and there. And then right then and there,...

Possession horror is on trend this year, and that looks to continue with Judgment of the Dead. THR reports that the upcoming horror movie will star Mohamed Karim and give an Egyptian spin on the possession formula.
Karim will star and produce Judgment of the Dead. Stuart Ford’s AGC will co-produce with Karim’s Mk Global Entertainment.
The actor will play “Dr. Sherif Hawass, a renowned Egyptologist who must save the world, and the woman he loves, after an artifact he unearths releases an ancient evil.”
Thomas M. Hewlett wrote the screenplay for Judgement of the Dead based on Karim’s original idea.
Interestingly, Judgment of the Dead was initially announced in 2021, under the title Book of Chaos, as a Dark Castle Entertainment feature. Dark Castle initially launched in 1998 by Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis and Gilbert Adler and most recently produced Simon Barrett’s directorial debut, Seance, and last year’s Orphan: First Kill.

It’s time for a new episode of our Best Horror Party Movies video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a movie that was widely considered to be a disappointment when it was first released back in 1996 – Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood (watch it Here). But while Bordello of Blood may be a step down from its predecessor, Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and it may pale in comparison to the similar From Dusk Till Dawn, which was released around the same time, it’s still a movie you can party to. And to find out how we party to Bordello of Blood, check out the video embedded above!

A couple months ago, we shined a spotlight on the 1984 Stephen King adaptation Children of the Corn for an episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series (you can watch that video Here). Now we’re taking a look at the 1992 sequel Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice (watch it at This Link) for an episode of The Black Sheep! To hear what we had to say about Children of the Corn II, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by David Price from a screenplay by A.L. Katz and Gilbert Adler, Children of the Corn II has the following synopsis:
The neighboring town of Hemingford has discovered not only the gruesome massacre of Gatlins entire adult population, but also the orphaned children who refused to participate in the human sacrifices. The once quiet Midwestern town is jolted into activity as a barrage of media reporters descend upon it.

Ever since letter-writing campaigns got the original "Star Trek" a third season, science fiction fans have beat the drum for their favorite shows that got prematurely canceled. Sometimes it works: "Jericho" got a second season thanks to fans mailing bags of nuts to the studio. Other times it doesn't: "Firefly" fans managed to get a movie, but never the revived series they wanted. Honestly, that's probably for the best given what we now know about Joss Whedon and Adam Baldwin.
While we don't hold out a lot of actual hope for the shows below to come back, this article highlights sci-fi series from the last several decades that should have run longer, either because they ended poorly/awkwardly or just because they were way too short. Where possible, because we're nothing if not constructive, suggestions are included as to how a continuation today might go. Here are 12 canceled sci-fi shows that deserve a second chance.

The Tales from the Crypt TV series was coming to an end in 1996 with the last season airing from April–July. After seven successful years, the Crypt Keeper was saying goodbye to TV and hello to Hollywood. Things got off to a good start in 1995 with Demon Knight, the first of a proposed Tales from the Crypt trilogy.
This was soon followed by Bordello of Blood. The film centres on a private investigator who, after looking into a missing person’s case, discovers that the local funeral parlour is also a brothel populated with vampire prostitutes. The Pi teams up with the missing person’s sister and a charismatic reverend to take on the vampires and their beautiful and deadly leader, Lilith.
The film was released in theatres 25 years ago on 16th August, 1996. However, the film had a difficult and turbulent production that meant it didn’t quite have the same bite as its predecessor.

Buffalo 8 has acquired worldwide rights at the just-wrapped Cannes virtual market to Givers of Death, an apocalyptic sci-fi thriller written and directed by and starring Addison Henderson. The pic, which is coming off its world premiere at the American Black Film Festival, will hit U.S. theaters and Premium VOD sometime in 2022.
The film, which is set in a world obliterated by a deadly virus that has killed a third of the population, centers on a the quest for peace for a hitman (Henderson) in a post-apocalyptic world where those who are too afraid to end their own lives from the painful virus hire hitmen to do it for them. Jonathan Sterritt, Lou Lombardi, JJ Alfieri, Jason Delane Lee and Yvonne Huff Lee also star.
Henderson said his film “was born from my own personal tragedies and was inspired by the citizens of Otsuchi, Japan who lost loved ones to a horrific tsunami.

After six successful seasons, the producers of Tales from the Crypt decided to try something not many other shows would dare do—relocate to another country.
This was long before the big money, multi-location productions like Game of Thrones. The horror anthology series was looking to take the Crypt Keeper, and the tales he told, to England.
Up until this point Tales from the Crypt had been filmed predominantly in L.A. Filming there was also one of the draws for Hollywood stars—they didn’t need to travel far to be on set, and for a show that prized itself on having star power, this was a crucial advantage. However, this would no longer be the case when production relocated halfway around the world.

Every October, we stab them with knives, killing their regular appearances and bringing them to new life with sharpened teeth, ghoulish gazes, and impossibly wide, sinister smiles. We make pumpkins into little monsters every year, but what if they came to life on their own... and wanted revenge for the years of jack-o'-lantern carvings, discarded guts, and baked seeds? Darin Beckstead's Proof of Concept for his planned feature film, Evil Nature, expertly explores this unnerving "what if?" with ample amounts of holiday humor and creature-centric horror. We've been provided with the fun and frightening Evil Nature Proof of Concept to share with Daily Dead readers, along with an exclusive Q&A with director Darin Beckstead.

Our lookbacks at the screen adaptations of Stephen King land at Children Of The Corn 2...
One of the more interesting aspects of these revisits so far has been how the sequels to different films have adapted to work without source material from Stephen King (Creepshow 2 aside). Mostly, they’ve not worked very well, but the Children Of The Corn franchise seems very determined to see if it can succeed in its seven further instalments. I like a challenge and have a morbid curiosity when it comes to these movies so I shall be watching all of them. Ask me again after the eighth Children Of The Corn movie as to whether this was a good idea or not.

Broom Hilda has hit the big time, and we're not talking about her waistline. Deadline reports producers Gilbert Adler and Jason A. Rosenberg plan to adapt Russell Myers' witch of newspaper comics fame as a feature film and more. Broom Hilda was previously adapted for television. It first featured on Archie's TV Funnies, which aired on CBS for two seasons, before being cancelled in 1973.
In 1978, Broom Hilda was part of the Fabulous Funnies TV show, which aired for 13 episodes before being cancelled by NBC. Adler has produced TV series including Tales from the Crypt (1991-96), Freddy's Nightmares (1988-90), and Perversions of Science (1997). She likes to drink. She likes to smoke. And she is super sexually aware. The classic newspaper comic strip Broom-Hilda is on its way to the big screen thanks to a Tales From The Crypt producer. Created by cartoonist Russell Myers in 1970, the strip is distributed by Chicago's Tribune Media Services. Broom-Hilda acted basically the opposite of every other female cartoon character of her time. Here's how her official website describes her: Living in an enchanted forest with surrealistic landscapes, the engaging characters of Broom Hilda happily have no connection with reality. Other comic characters are extensions or distortions of reality, but Broom Hilda deals in pure fantasy, making the strip bewitchingly unique. Here in the forest, the inhabitants maintain a standard of madness where total irrelevance is the only relevancy. The strip is simply a loony-bin where what’s said and done often makes no sense whatsoever, much to...

What can I say? This is like reporting that Ziggy is getting his own movie. It's not often that comic strip characters transition to the big screen, and even more rare for one as obscure as overweight alcoholic witch Broom-Hilda. Granted, a lot of cities do still run the comic strip, but I don't believe it has nearly the reach of Garfield or Marmaduke. Still, Deadline reports the rights to the character have been purchased by producers Gilbert Adler and Jason A. Rosenberg, who are hoping to kickstart a film franchise.

Exclusive: Broom-Hilda, the 1,500 year-old, man-crazy witch with an attitude and a weight problem born out of the popular 1970 comic strip from Russell Myers, has just been picked up by producers Gilbert Adler and Jason A. Rosenberg. The two secured the IP from the strip’s syndicator, Chicago-based Tribune Content Agency. Producers Gil Adler and Jason A. Rosenberg have reportedly secured the film rights to Russell Myers' popular 1970 comic strip "Broom-Hilda" from the Tribune Content Agency.
The comic follows a 1,500 year-old, man-crazy witch with an attitude and a weight problem. The pair are reportedly looking to capitalize on the IP however they can, which means a new movie.
Rosenberg says in a statement: "Russell Myers has been entertaining audiences for years. We're excited to bring this to the big screen. We plan to create a franchise and leverage the IP across film, television and digital media." Adler adds: "Our intention is to make it into a movie that might have a number 2 and number 3 behind it as well."

Last November we announced that Bill Duke was prepping a film project on boxer Joe Louis. Duke teamed up with producers Gil Adler and Joel Eisenberg, inking a deal with holders of rights to Lewis' story (Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo of Kirmser Ponturo Group) that will see Duke co-produce and direct the film, which will focus on Louis’ historic two fights with German boxer Max Schmeling. October 20th is yet another stellar week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, all leading up to our favorite holiday: Halloween. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. And as if that’s not enough, Scream is also busy with two more great releases this Tuesday as well—Bordello of Blood and The Larry Fessenden Collection.
Kino Lorber is reviving another cult classic on Tuesday too—The Oblong Box—which is based on the Edgar Allan Poe tale and co-stars two cinematic legends, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. For those of you Back to the Future fans out there (and really, who isn’t?), Universal is giving the series a few special releases in time for the film’s 30th anniversary and,...

Next Tuesday, Scream Factory will offer horror fans several new options for Halloween movie marathons when The Larry Fessenden Collection and the Tales From the Crypt films Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood come out on respective Blu-rays. Ahead of their impending release date, we have clips and trailers from all three Blu-rays to give you a look at what's to come.
Demon Knight (Collector's Edition Blu-ray): "A mysterious drifter known as Brayker (William Sadler, Iron Man 3) possesses the last of seven ancient keys that hold the power to stop the forces of darkness and protect all humanity from ultimate evil. After several successful seasons on HBO under its belt, Tales from the Crypt and its iconic host, The Cryptkeeper (voiced by John Kassir), made the leap to the big screen in January 1995 with the feature film Demon Knight. Directed by Ernest Dickerson and starring William Sadler, Billy Zane, Jada Pinkett, Dick Miller, Brenda Bakke, Thomas Hayden Church, Cch Pounder and Charles Fleischer, Demon Knight debuted at #3 its opening weekend and took in over $21 million during its theatrical run, making the first of the Tales from the Crypt a bona fide success (even if the critics didn’t seem to think so).
A movie best remembered by fans for its masterful blending of horror and comedy, an incredibly diverse and talented cast of players as well as an iconic soundtrack and jaw-dropping special effects to boot, it was love at first sight after I first experienced Demon Knight all those years...

One of my very favorite parts of this job is being able to pay tribute to movies that I grew up loving, the ones that taught me something about the genre and had a huge impact on me as a horror or cinema fan in general. One such movie is Ernest R. Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight andm with its 20th anniversary approaching, I thought the horror comedy would make for a perfect selection for my next Deadly – Horror & Sci-Fi Magazine retrospective in the upcoming November issue.
During my research on Demon Knight over the last several months, I came across some really cool production stills and the official set of lobby cards that were released in 1995. Because they’re not something easily found online, I thought it would be fun to share with our readers as I geeked out over these and think other fans of...

It’s hard to believe that 15 years ago was the last episode of the Crypt. Going to syndication after the series ended on HBO was never the same as they were not allowed to show the blood and gore that made it a hit. Spanning from 1989-1996 Crypt gave us many famous actors in another light with the likes of people such as Micheal J Fox participating in the carnage. Tales From the Crypt, the 1990s HBO horror anthology that was based on the 1950s EC Comics horror anthology, is coming back to life as an hour-long series, though it appears this contemporary reincarnation will likely be a ghost of its former sardonic self.
If you'll remember, Tales From the Crypt was hosted by the cackling zombie known as the Cryptkeeper, who delighted in slaying all us boils and ghouls with truly offal puns. But this time out, it sounds like the producers are being real killjoys, kiddies. It seems they are taking a deadly serious approach. Yes, I'm afraid it all sounds quite grave. (Okay, I’m done.)

[1] It's been fifteen years since HBO's horror series Tales from the Crypt ended its seven-season run, so I suppose it's not terribly surprising that someone has decreed it time for a... reboot? Remake? I'm not sure what, exactly. Point is, there's going to be another one. And it actually sounds pretty different from the old one. Read more details after the jump. The HBO series, which ran from 1989 to 1996, was an anthology show based on the popular EC Comics line from the '50s. Like the first show, the update will take inspiration from the original comics. Unlike the earlier series, however, the new Crypt will ditch the self-contained episode format in favor of an ongoing drama, and will not otherwise be "related" to the original HBO show. The updated Crypt show is being developed by Gil Adler, who produced the original HBO series, and Andrew Cosby, co-creator of Eureka and co-founder of Boom!

Back in 1989, a series called Tales from the Crypt debuted on HBO and would continue to run until 1996. The series was based on the 1950s EC Comics title of the same name, which also spawned a 1972 anthology movie, three feature films in Demon Knight, Bordello of Blood, and a third much less–know title, Ritual, as well as the still–strange–to–think–about Saturday morning cartoon, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, and a kid's game show called Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House. The Cryptkeeper (voiced by John Kassir) himself was a pop culture horror icon, known for his unsettling appearance and oddly appealing cheesy sense of humor. Even I as a child had a Cryptkeeper mask for Halloween!

With the sudden resurgence of anthology films over the past few years, it only makes sense that one of the ultimate horror anthology franchises would make a comeback as well. What doesn't make sense, however, is that they would change the popular format so that it is no longer an anthology! That's right, the Cryptkeeper himself is looking to make a return to the airwaves sometime in the near future, with a brand new Tales from the Crypt TV series being developed and pitched to broadcast networks shortly. However, they are pitching it as an ongoing series that will follow a group of characters from the comics "in a more modern context." Original Crypt series producer Gil Adler is teaming with Eureka co-creator Andrew Cosby to launch the new show.
