Andrew Patterson’s latest creation presents a rare mix of crime drama, rural character study, musical interludes, and beekeeping intrigue that catches the eye immediately. The film unfolds around a charismatic honey producer in a small town where Alabama stands in for Oklahoma, setting a stage that feels both familiar and fresh.
Its storyline shifts from offbeat musical moments featuring bluegrass performances to scenes filled with tension as the plot thickens around a daring investigation. This film introduces an assortment of ideas that many might not expect to coexist so naturally on screen.
Andrew Patterson, the director and writer behind the film, has moved from smaller projects to this more ambitious undertaking. His background in smaller, character-focused films makes his current work feel like a step up in scope and complexity. The film’s production involves significant names, a factor that adds a notable weight to the performance.

Nepo babies have been around as long as there have been artists. The idea of a "legacy" is one we humans simply cannot get away from. As storytelling beings, we will have always constructed -- and will continue to construct -- broad, historical, intergenerational narratives for ourselves. We can't stop tracing our professional and personal origins among the ancients, and writing their stories directly into our own. We simply shed our fascination with the possibility that talents can be passed from one generation to the next.
That's certainly the case in Hollywood, a relatively recent art institution in human history, but still rife with its own multigenerational legacies. It's likely you read the headline above and instantly thought of the Coppola clan. The Coppola family has, as of this writing, accrued 12 Oscar wins and 40 nominations between them, and they currently hold the record for the family with the most members to be nominated for Oscars.

It is probably no accident that among Matthew Shear’s acting credits are no less than four movies directed by New York filmmaker extraordinaire Noah Baumbach, or that one of his most recent is another angst-ridden Jewish comedy, Between the Temples. Clearly he has spent his downtime on those sets soaking up the atmosphere and the comedic beats in preparation for his writing-directing debut Fantasy Life, premiering at SXSW today in the Narrative Feature competition.
Assembling a dream cast of actors who know how to deliver this kind of New York Jewish-centric character-driven comedy that Woody Allen trademarked and others like Baumbach have also travelled in so successfully, Shear actually seems to me to be more of a modern-day Richard Benjamin who also turned into a fine filmmaker in his own right. That seems to be the trajectory here except Shear is clearly cribbing from his own life and experience with depression,...

Talk about life imitating art, imitating life. About a month ago, Amanda Peet told IndieWire during a recent interview, something funny and mortifying happened to her at the grocery store in front of her two teenage daughters. Someone recognized the actress. Well, sort of. They said hello, and complimented her on her work. And then it became clear that this person “recognized” her as Lake Bell, and complimented her on Lake Bell’s work.
This has happened before. It’s happened enough, in fact, that Peet encouraged her “Fantasy Life” filmmaker and co-star Matthew Shear to include it in his feature directorial debut, in which Peet plays an actress who, yup, often gets mistaken for Lake Bell. It’s funny, and it’s a little sad, and it’s incredibly honest, and it speaks to the spirit in which Shear, a Noah Baumbach regular and former star of the series “The Alienist,...

The 97th Academy Awards just ended, but it's never too early to start thinking about next year's Oscars. Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng make their ridiculously early 2026 Oscar predictions.
The 2025 slate is more akin to the 2023 one than last year's with some big names and past Oscar players in the mix. James Cameron will unfurl Avatar: Fire and Ash in December. Leonardo DiCaprio leads Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. The filmmaker has 11 Oscar nominations and zero wins. Will this be the one to break the duck? Chloé Zhao is back with an adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's novel Hamnet starring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal. Both actors have another film in play: Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! for the former and Oliver Hermanus' The History of Sound for the latter. Caroline Vignal’s It’s Raining Men follows Iris (Laure Calamy), a Parisian dentist whose stagnant marriage propels her into a whirlwind of app-driven dalliances, blending cheeky humor with poignant introspection.
The film’s premise—middle-aged desire clashing with marital complacency—echoes the French tradition of treating infidelity as a nuanced exploration of human complexity rather than a moral failing. Vignal situates this tale within a cultural landscape where Anglo-American audiences might demand judgment, yet here, the focus remains on Iris’s liberation.
The script nods to classics like Breathless in its breezy defiance of narrative rigidity, though Vignal swaps Godard’s frenetic jump cuts for lush, surreal detours, such as a spontaneous musical sequence set to the titular anthem.
This juxtaposition of grounded realism and whimsical escapism mirrors France’s ambivalence toward tradition and modernity—a tension as relevant in today’s #MeToo era as it was in the heyday of the Nouvelle Vague.

In this film, the narrative is constructed using extensive archival material and the artist’s own reflections. The documentary uses personal voiceovers to provide an intimate account of Tim Bergling’s experiences, inviting viewers to witness his creative process as it unfolded over the years.
The film assembles a collection of rare footage that captures the genuine moments of his career, offering an authentic glimpse into his thoughts and feelings.
The style here does not rely on conventional interview setups but rather builds its story through a careful selection of behind-the-scenes clips and candid expressions of emotion, making the storytelling approach both refreshing and heartfelt.
The film opens by tracing Tim Bergling’s evolution from a passionate young musician in Stockholm to a celebrated name in the electronic music scene. It presents his early ventures with digital audio workstations and his initial steps into a world that would eventually bring him widespread acclaim.

Netflix produced its first non-documentary feature in 2015. It was called Beasts of No Nation, and it was fine. However, the film did not get nominated for an Academy Award. Lots has changed in the last decade.
Your favorite streamer often gets nominated for major awards each year. 2025 is no different. Emilia Pérez has 13 nominations alone, including one for Best Picture. So far, Netflix has yet to get a win in that category, and Emilia Pérez is not the favorite this year, either.
In fact, Netflix has also almost been entirely shut out of wins in the acting categories. Only Laura Dern won, and that was for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. But the streamer does do well in some other categories. Those might not be part of the Big 6, but when it comes to documentaries, Netflix knows what it is doing. Just see below, and you'll know.

Sean Baker’s fans would hail him as a pioneer of empathetic cinema in the modern day, and his detractors would dismiss him as a two-bit purveyor of poverty porn. One thing that neither side can deny, however, is that Sean Baker has become one of the defining voices of independent American cinema in the 21st century. A filmmaker who’s taken his cues from all over the history of the medium—from kitchen sink realism to exploitation films—and melded them together into his proper vision, Baker’s world is one distinctly defined by its proximity to our very own.
Looking across the totality of Baker’s filmography, there are certainly recurring themes and motifs that make their way from beginning to end—poverty, resilience, Karren Karagulian—but each one of his films stands on its own in their idiosyncrasies and how they choose to tackle these ideas. No two Baker protagonists are interchangeable,...

In theory, actors and United States Marines might seem to be the extreme opposites of one another. The latter are perceived to be among the toughest of the tough in the armed forces, able to take anything life throws at them, while the former have to be sensitive and in touch with their feelings in order to empathize with a variety of different characters they might play. Perhaps counterintuitively, then, it turns out that many actors we revere and acclaim actually served as Marines before becoming stars.
Not everyone on this list will surprise you. In fact, some are so absolutely obvious that you probably intuitively knew it even if you didn't literally know it for a fact. Others, however, so ably step into the shoes of characters who are so totally not "the few, the proud, the brave" that you'll wonder how they managed to turn their sensitivity off...

While the strike-impacted 2024 release slate resulted in fewer movies overall, 2025 promises to be something of a return to normal with a bevy of highly anticipated films coming to both theaters and streaming. From two new Marvel movies to James Gunn’s DC reboot of “Superman” to a “Jurassic” reboot to live-action remakes of animated classics galore, there’s plenty of familiar territory, but also noteworthy original films as well – Ryan Coogler’s vampire film “Sinners,” Steven Soderbergh’s ghost story “Presence” and a new Paul Thomas Anderson movie are all on tap, to name a few.
And that’s not to mention the films that don’t have release dates yet but are promised for 2025 – Netflix alone has the third “Knives Out” movie “Wake Up, Dead Man,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” and a new Noah Baumbach film.
Oh yeah, and there’s a new “Avatar” sequel coming in December.

Janet Planet. The image is tough to see until our eyes adjust: a girl, not yet a teenager, perched on the edge of a bed, alone, ensconced in darkness, her head bisected by the edge of the frame. She’s looking. Is it at something, or for something? She gets up, walks outside, the deafening susurrus of cicadas all around her. She makes a call on a payphone, announces herself as Lacy. “I’m gonna kill myself,” she deadpans into the receiver. A pause. “I said I’m gonna kill myself if you don’t come get me.” She hangs up.This is the first sequence of Janet Planet (2024), the first film by Annie Baker—and it immediately exhibits the qualities of her formidable work as a playwright: the curious quiet, the felt time, the mordant sense of humor. Like Kenneth Lonergan before her, Baker is a celebrated stage dramatist...

CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks starts Season 2 in a precarious situation—sidelined by his superiors after the tumultuous Prague operation from the previous season. With excess time and growing restlessness, a cryptic message about an old greymail case pulls him toward Seoul, South Korea, where peril awaits.
This mission represents more than routine work; it’s Owen’s opportunity to redeem himself or potentially meet his downfall. Personal connections to South Korea deepen the emotional complexity, as memories of his deceased father emerge during a treacherous conspiracy.
In Seoul, Owen becomes deeply involved with Jang Kyun, a South Korean intelligence agent whose wife Russian mercenaries have kidnapped. What initially appears as a straightforward rescue mission transforms into a complex plot linked to cryptocurrency, threatening global political stability.
Working with allies like Nichka Lashin, Max Meladze’s daughter, and Janus Ferber—an unenthusiastic partner—Owen confronts dangerous operatives, criminal organizations, and internal CIA challenges.

Though primarily known as a comedy actor, Ben Stiller has maintained a steady behind-the-scenes presence as a director and a producer for decades, and he puts these talents to great use on TV's trippiest mind-bender, "Severance." But that's not all he brings to the table.
Stiller has been known to complement his comedic roles with artsier fare, including Wes Anderson's 2001 comedy-drama "The Royal Tenenbaums" and Noah Baumbach's 2010 romantic comedy "Greenberg." He also seems to have kept his eyes open when it came to working methods, taking influences from acclaimed filmmakers that he could later use on his own sets. During an appearance on Mike Birbiglia's podcast "Working It Out," Stiller revealed that a certain restriction Baumbach used on set inspired him to forbid certain things while filming. In the case of "Severance," the thing he doesn't allow on the set is phones:

During an appearance on Mike Birbiglia's podcast "Working It Out," Stiller revealed that a certain restriction Baumbach used on set inspired him to forbid certain things while filming. In the case of "Severance," the thing he doesn't allow on the set is phones:

“Train Dreams,” a drama starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, has been acquired by Netflix out of Sundance. Our own review called it a “patient, profound and painful experience” and compared it to the work of Terrence Malick.
The movie, about a logger who is working on the railroad, was co-written and directed by Clint Bentley. Greg Kwedar co-wrote the screenplay with Bentley and the two co-wrote the Oscar-nominated “Sing Sing.” Kerry Condon, William H. Macy and Clifton Collins Jr. also star.
Black Bear and Kamala Films produced the film with Marissa McMahon, Teddy Schwarzman, Will Janowitz, Ashley Schlaifer and Michael Heimler. Edgerton and Kwedar are executive producers with Scott Hinckley and John Friedberg.
The “Train Dreams” deal is one of a precious few that have been made at Sundance 2025, continuing a recent trend of distributors holding back on major bidding wars at the Utah festival amid a time of cost-cutting in the film industry.

A little over a year ago, it was reported that Noah Baumbach has been tapped to helm his fourth project with Netflix after Marriage Story, White Noise and The Meyerowitz Stories. He’ll be reuniting with Sandler and pairing the comedic actor with George Clooney for the new project. The details for the movie’s plot has yet to be revealed, but Baumbach is also on board as a producer on the movie. He will be joined by Sony’s Amy Pascal and David Heyman as producers. Heyman had also worked with Baumbach on Marriage Story and also produced Barbie.
While plot details are still kept under wraps, Deadline has revealed some new details that Netflix announced in their big presser. It is now known that the title for this project is Jay Kelly and it is slated to drop sometime in the fall, but an exact date has yet to be announced.

It’s alive.
Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro has revealed the first glimpse of his upcoming Netflix film Frankenstein, which is slated for release in November.
During Wednesday’s Next on Netflix event, del Toro introduced the first footage from Frankenstein to select journalists. “I wanted to introduce a small taste, a teaser, for my film Frankenstein,” the filmmaker said via video. “This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years. And I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein. And they probably would be right. You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this. I hope you enjoy this small look at Frankenstein.”

The universal truth about divorce is it always makes things harder for the child. I’m not saying it doesn’t affect the two people who are parting ways—they’re obviously emotionally drained in most cases—but the kid has to suffer the most, especially if it’s a little one. The term ‘shuttlecock’ is often used to describe the situation of a child when their parents are divorcing, which is a very sad thing. I am obviously saying all this in the context of Shared Custody, Disney+’s first Spanish series. Not every couple who is ending their relationships is the same, but we are only focusing on Christina, aka Chris, and Diego here. The series handles the story quite well by adding a quirky comedy angle to it, which makes it an easy watch—unlike something like Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story. Sure, Chris and Diego keep fighting over their daughter,...

Ben Stiller shared how Noah Baumbach’s directing style rubbed off on him while working on “Greenberg.”
Stiller starred in Baumbach’s 2010 rom-com and recalled on Mike Birbiglia’s “Working It Out” podcast that the director had “no chairs” on set.
“I think it was like 10 days into shooting, and I’m like, ‘Where’s the chairs? Oh my God, there’s no chairs here,'” Stiller said. “And that’s his choice because he doesn’t want to have people sitting around.”
Stiller added that people still found a place to sit down, but it helped keep everyone focused and moving. So, when he directed the adventure comedy “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” a few years later, Stiller adopted Baumbach’s policy.
As Stiller has acted in films from auteur directors like Baumbach and Wes Anderson, he said he has picked up on certain methods of theirs to use on his own projects.

“The Effects of Lying” uses a single-day timeline, heightening the dramatic tension of unfolding events. This condensed structure echoes theatrical storytelling, compelling characters into quick and often tumultuous transformations.
The narrative focuses on Naveen, whose meticulously crafted life crumbles under successive revelations, with brief glimpses into other perspectives, like his daughter Simran’s, enriching the emotional landscape.
Packed events create narrative urgency, though they occasionally overwhelm the story, leaving certain character arcs less developed. This fragmented approach echoes family dramas where emotional eruptions trigger introspection. Cultural elements provide meaningful context, revealing tensions between familial traditions and personal aspirations within a British-Asian household.
The father-daughter relationship emerges as a poignant core, anchoring the narrative’s chaos through tender moments that illuminate the delicate threads binding families during turbulent times.

900 Days Without Anabel weaves the stark reality of Anabel Segura’s kidnapping into its storytelling. The series presents Anabel, a 22-year-old from Madrid, showing her life beyond typical true crime statistics.
The abduction happened during Anabel’s jog on April 12, 1993, leaving her family and Spain in distress. The story moved from early suspicions about Eta to the revelation that money drove her kidnappers. This shift reflected social patterns, where personal accounts replaced broad political conflicts.
The series stands out through its technical elements. The mix of staged scenes with news clips builds suspense. The audio work adds emotional depth.
900 Days Without Anabel creates something fresh in independent cinema, mixing artistic quality with broad appeal.

Shannon Alexander, who directed It’s Coming, makes a documentary that pulls viewers into the scary experiences of Ashley Roland-White and her family. The film explores Ashley, a mother of five, and her worsening experiences with supernatural beings in their Brooklyn home. In addition to creating a tense conflict, this narrative structure encourages in-depth reflection on beliefs and family ties.
Alexander uses a raw, personal style and avoids flashy looks in favor of an observed style that makes the work more real. The film keeps a tight pace for its 90 minutes, sometimes lulling us to sleep before revealing troubling things.

Alexander uses a raw, personal style and avoids flashy looks in favor of an observed style that makes the work more real. The film keeps a tight pace for its 90 minutes, sometimes lulling us to sleep before revealing troubling things.

“Memories of a Burning Body” skillfully combines documentary and fiction elements, crafting a unique narrative that feels personal and broad. The narrative innovations seen in films by modern directors like Noah Baumbach, who frequently conflate the lines between reality and fiction, are reminiscent of this hybrid approach.
Real conversations with three women in their 60s and 70s raise the film’s emotional weight. This gives the film a sense of authenticity. Audiences are invited into a layered exploration of femininity and resilience thanks to the candor of their stories, which creates a rich tapestry of real-life experiences that shape the composite character played by Sol Carballo.
The filmmakers’ decision to keep the guests’ identities secret during the audio interviews gives the story a touching depth. This choice is similar to the style choices made in French New Wave movies, where voiceovers often show what characters are thinking and feeling. While...

Donnie Yen plays Fok Chi-ho in The Prosecutor, a role that is very different from his usual action-hero characterizations. Fok’s rise from a committed police officer to a crusading prosecutor is an interesting look at morality in a broken legal system. It’s a transformation that appeals to today’s audience, reflecting a generational change in which the distinction between right and wrong becomes more ambiguous.
Fok’s reasons come from a deep-seated desire for justice, which is motivated by disillusionment with the system he used to serve. You can feel this conflict inside him as he tries to deal with the limits of his new role while still being naturally drawn to the rough edges of his past.
Fok’s unwavering determination and instinct to be a father make his personality even stronger when his age is considered. At 61, Yen gives Fok a worn-out look that adds another layer to his performance.

Every Minute Counts is a moving look at the 1985 earthquake in Mexico City that connects personal and public trauma in a way that feels instant and deep. Its nonlinear storytelling encourages viewers to engage with the characters’ lives before and after the disaster, revealing how such disasters change who we are.
The series reflects societal concerns about vulnerability and resilience and resonates strongly in today’s cultural environment. The characters act as mirrors, forcing us to think about our responses to crises as we deal with our own problems.
The cinematography immerses the viewer in the chaotic beauty of Mexico City, and the editing skillfully weaves together flashbacks, echoing the narrative innovations found in modern independent film. The sound design raises the tension while grounding the drama in a hauntingly current reality.
By balancing these artistic elements, Every Minute Counts walks the line between independent and popular filmmaking. It makes...

For over four decades, George Knapp, a veteran investigative journalist, leads a complex investigation into extraterrestrial phenomena in the docuseries Investigation Alien. His method combines skepticism and curiosity, drawing viewers into a world where each episode raises more questions than answers.
The importance of Investigation Alien lies in its relevance to current cultural discussions, especially in light of recent government disclosures that have elevated UFO discussions from fringe narrative to serious public debate. This series taps into societal concerns about secrecy and the unknown, offering a new angle on our place in the cosmos.
The series uses moody cinematography that helps tell the story, a lot like how a well-composed jazz song does. Each shot captures the vastness of the desert and the personal accounts of eyewitnesses, creating a rich audiovisual experience that enhances the narrative. By challenging us to engage with the mysteries it presents, Investigation Alien becomes a cultural artifact in this way.

Wes Anderson doesn’t talk a lot about his work in animation. Frankly, the more famous he gets, the less Anderson seems to enjoy doing interviews, which is why it was such a treat to sit down with the director of “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Isle of Dogs” at the Annecy Animation Film Festival last summer.
Over the course of a 90-minute master class, Anderson discussed what drew him to stop motion, how coming to the medium from a place of naiveté resulted in such distinctive-looking movies, and how animation in turn has informed his subsequent live-action work.
Unlike a number of other filmmakers, from Guillermo del Toro to Jacques Demy, who started out making rudimentary stop-motion films as kids, “I didn’t have any real ambition to do an animated movie until I’d made a few live-action movies,” Anderson explained. “It was something I sort of found my way into.

The Golden Globes have been honoring comedies since the 1950s and the days of such Billy Wilder gems as The Apartment and Some Like It Hot. But the category — which for the past 60 years has crowned a single winner among comedies and musicals — hasn’t always experienced smooth sailing.
How one defines a comedy — is it punchlines? pratfalls? subtle satire? — has been just one of the issues bedeviling the award. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association began playing even more fast and loose with definitions earlier this century when it increasingly nominated movies that seemed neither particularly funny nor acclaimed, instead using the category to bring popular films and stars into the fold that would otherwise have no way of getting there.
At the moment, the smaller, clubbier HFPA has been disbanded in favor of a larger and more representative group of global journalists. This has cut down on the number of nominated howlers,...
