With Stranger Things concluding in epic fashion this year, The Duffer Brothers (that’s Matt and Ross) are going to have to find a way to fill their time; after all, they’ve spent a decade on that show alone. With that, The Duffer Brothers have a couple of projects going on, one of which is The Boroughs, another project in development for Netflix. And while it might not be taking viewers to the Upside Down, it does share some qualities.
The Duffer Brothers turned up at the Next on Netflix event this week to not only promote Stranger Things but The Boroughs and Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, in which they will serve as executive producers. On these, Matt said, “Of the two projects, The Boroughs probably shares the most DNA with Stranger Things because it’s about a group of misfits who fight an otherworldly evil.

Netflix is set to break new ground in supernatural drama with “The Boroughs,” a unique series from the creators of “Stranger Things” that shifts the genre’s focus to older protagonists. Announced during the streaming platform’s 2025 content presentation, the show promises to blend horror and humor in a retirement community setting.
The series follows a group of senior residents who must band together to fight an otherworldly threat targeting their most valuable resource: time. Creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, with oversight from Matt and Ross Duffer, have crafted a premise that moves beyond traditional supernatural storytelling.
“This time our misfits are a little on the older side. They ride golf carts, not bikes,” Matt Duffer said, highlighting the show’s distinctive approach. The series will be set in a retirement community located in the New Mexico desert, offering a fresh perspective on supernatural drama.

When word of The Boroughs, a new series produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers, first got out more than two years ago, the supernatural/horror drama was referred to as “Stranger Things at a retirement home.”
Netflix pushed back at that description and the link between the two shows. At the streamer’s Next on Netflix 2025 slate presentation Wednesday, the Duffers made the connection themselves, revealing for the first time that, like their Stranger Things counterparts, the characters in The Burroughs also will be battling “otherworldly evil.”
The Duffers made the comments while speaking about two upcoming series from their Upside Down Pictures, The Boroughs and Something Very Bad is Going to Happen.

The Stranger Things team is once again teasing a colossal final season.
At Netflix’s Next on Netflix press event, creators the Duffer Brothers discussed the eagerly anticipated fifth season, which is debuting later this year and marks the first new episodes of the coming-of-age sci-fi hit in three years.
“We spent a full year filming this season,” Ross Duffer said. “By the end, we’d captured over 650 hours of footage. So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies. It’s pretty insane.”
Matt Duffer added, “At the same time, we think it’s our most personal story. It was super intense and emotional to film — for us and for our actors. We’ve been making this show together for almost 10 years. There was a lot of crying. There was so much crying. The show means so much to all of us,...

After spending the last 10 years of their lives plotting and crafting Stranger Things, you can forgive Matt and Ross Duffer for getting teary-eyed while filming its final episodes. “There was a lot of crying,” Matt Duffer told journalists on Wednesday. “There was so much crying.”
The Duffers took part in the Next on Netflix event at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The theme of the morning was “you’re not ready for what’s next,” and those in attendance saw a special sizzle reel of Stranger Things 5, which featured behind-the-scenes moments of actors like Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard on the set, plus quick clips from the final season.

“Stranger Things” is nearing its end. With the fifth and final season set to be released sometime later this year, creators Matt and Ross Duffer (collectively known as the Duffer Brothers) are closing the book on the Hawkins, Indiana gang and their superpowered bestie. And at a Next on Netflix event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, they showed off the very first footage from the series.
The footage, described by Ross as “the world’s very first behind-the-scenes look” at “Stranger Things” Season 5, showcased our main characters going up against the villainous Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Since this was behind-the-scenes footage, you also saw some guys in grey leotards that will probably be replaced by Demogorgons or some other creepy crawlies from the Upside Down. (The season is set in 1987.)

The existential apocalypse of a Turkish literature professor gets an oblique and chilling study in “The Things You Kill.” On its surface, this disquieting diptych about male anxiety has the feel of, say, an Asghar Farhadi movie, a moral dilemma urging forth a thriller plot. But that’s precisely the sort of bait-and-switch Iranian writer/director Alireza Khatami is operating on here, until his tense and nightmarish film starts to resemble more something like David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” as directed by Abbas Kiarostami. Khatami (“Terrestrial Verses”), who lives in Canada, relocated the setting from Iran to Turkey to evade censorship in his native country — a censorship of patriarchal violence that the film itself also rings upon like a warning bell of a bleak future.

I've recently been on a disaster movie kick. Perhaps it's because everything seems a little bleak right now. Or perhaps I just needed something brainless to watch — disaster movies can be fun, but let's be honest: they're not exactly high art. As I went from one disaster movie to another, a curious theme began to arise. In addition to these films all following a similar set-up, in which we see famous landmarks and buildings completely obliterated by destruction, they also all seem to share a similar plot element: the hero/main character is almost always going through a divorce or separation, or already divorced from their spouse. And in almost every case, the impending disaster ends up rekindling that seemingly dead relationship.
This got me thinking: is there any sort of deeper meaning here? Speaking from experience, I can tell you the act of divorce can seem like world-ending event...

The late, great David Lynch obviously gave us so many wonderful films over the course of his career. I mean, the guy literally turned a failed ABC TV pilot with no surviving costumes or sets into a movie that some have hailed as the greatest film of the 21st century.
Probably one of his more underrated works was 1997’s Lost Highway, the film that dared to ask: what if O.J. Simpson was a saxophone-playing Bill Pullman, and he briefly had the ability to shape-shift? At the very least, it’s the only movie in history to use “Two Thumbs Down” from Siskel and Ebert as a selling point in its marketing campaign.
Lost Highway is especially notable for comedy fans, because it featured Richard Pryor’s final screen performance. Pryor plays Arnie, who owns the auto shop that employs Pete – the young man who may or may not be some...

Netflix is removing six of its own original shows and movies in February 2025. In the increasingly uncertain streaming landscape, many streaming services have removed their own originals from their libraries, for a variety of reasons. This includes low viewership, as was the case with Paramount+'s Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies and Disney+'s Willow. Other reasons include tax write-offs, as has been the case with many Max titles including the cancelled Batgirl movie, which had wrapped filming and was in post-production but was never released.
Netflix has also removed a number of original titles from its library, though the majority of these have been taken down because of the end of licensing agreements rather than viewership or financial issues. This includes the Netflix Marvel shows in the Defenders universe, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher, which are now streaming on Disney+. Even though many shows and movies...

After decades of speculation, Mel Brooks is returning to make Spaceballs 2, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the long-awaited comedy sequel. The original Spaceballs is writer/director Mel Brooks' parody of Star Wars and features Bill Pullman as the Han Solo-esque Lone Starr, John Candy as his sidekick Barf, and Rick Moranis as the villainous Dark Helmet. While the film was only a moderate success upon release, it soon became a cult hit thanks to its pitch-perfect sendup of the original Star Wars trilogy, picking apart its commercialism and silly sci-fi tropes.
Spaceballs itself teases a sequel dubbed Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money, but while fans hoped for a follow-up for over 3 decades, little news ever materialized. However, with director Mel Brooks returning for his TV series, History of the World, Part Two in 2023, hope was reignited that the comedy maven would...

Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned.
In 1987, MGM and Brooksfilms released a feature-length parody of the Star Wars movie trilogy that would become almost as enduring as its target with Spaceballs, a Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis and John Candy-starring send-up of science-fiction’s three biggest films. Since then, George Lucas revived the Star Wars franchise with a second trilogy, spun off the series with countless novels, comic books, TV shows and video games, sold Star Wars to Disney for a bajillion Space Bucks and watched as the franchise bloated into a behemoth of cash-in content and merchandising that would make Yogurt proud.
However, in the nearly 40 years since Mel Brooks produced, wrote, directed and starred in Spaceballs, the comedy icon has taken a break from following every branching path that the vast, multimedia Star Wars franchise has gone down. A long time ago in a galaxy not so far away, Mel Brooks blessed Star Wars fans with the ultimate parody… but he hasn’t kept up with the franchise since.

Few actors in Hollywood are as respected and admired as Denzel Washington. After getting his start in acting back in the late 1970s and having his first breakout role in the medical drama St. Elsewhere, in which he played Dr. Phillip Chandler on all six seasons, Washington has played a number of iconic characters in a variety acclaimed movies. Some of his most memorable early movies include Glory (1989), Malcolm X (1992), The Hurricane (1999), and, of course, Training Day (2001). In fact, he has been nominated for 10 Oscars so far, winning two, for Glory and Training Day.
Starting in the mid-2000s, a career shift occurred and Washington became something of an action star alongside his continued work in more dramatic productions such as 2002's Antwone Fisher, 2007's The Great Debaters, and 2012's Flight. This new phase of Washington's career could largely be considered to start with Man on Fire in 2004. A handful of years later,...

Over the years, Sandra Bullock has certainly become a versatile actress. Although she has tried her hand at many genres, her defining specialty has become rom-coms, simply because of how many times she has starred in one. While she has been a part of such films for years now, the first that pushed her into the romance genre was 1995’s While You Were Sleeping.

Netflix's 1992 may be a unique addition to the crime thriller genre, but viewers looking for something similar to watch have a long list of shows to choose from. Created by Jorge Guerricaechevarría and Álex de la Iglesia, 1992 centers on two characters, Richi and Amparo, who form an unlikely alliance to solve a series of interconnected murder mysteries. However, the closer they get to catching the killer, the more they realize there is more to his motives than meets the eye.

Although the show adopts many well-worn tropes of the genre and struggles to etch its unique identity in the genre, it manages to conclude on a well-rounded note, barely leaving any plot threads hanging. Earlier this year, Paramount and Miramax announced that they are reviving the Scary Movie horror parody series to bring a Scary Movie 6 to theatres sometime in 2025, with the Wayans Brothers back in creative control – and that announcement has inspired us to go back and revisit the earlier entries in the franchise. Directed by David Zucker from a screenplay by Craig Mazin, Jim Abrahams, and Pat Proft, Scary Movie 4 has the following synopsis: Dim-witted Cindy Campbell and her sex-crazed friend, Brenda, team up with cute-but-clueless Tom Ryan to save the world from a hostile alien invasion, with hints of War of the Worlds, Saw II, Million Dollar Baby and The Village.

Casper the Friendly Ghost made his theatrical debut in I. Sparber's 1945 short "The Friendly Ghost," released by Famous Studios. The gimmick of the short was that a boy-like apparition named Casper, feeling lonely and wanting friends, would causally approach animals and adults to introduce himself only to see them flee in terror. He is, after all, a ghost. Only open-minded children could see that Casper wasn't a threat and befriend him.
The success of "The Friendly Ghost" led to 54 additional Famous Studios Casper shorts that lasted through 1959. Casper also began starring in a series of Harvey Comics in 1951, and the character's mythos expanded greatly. He soon became friends with a witch named Wendy and was bullied by some baddies called the Ghostly Trio. The comics and shorts also spawned multiple TV shows to feature the Friendly Ghost, mostly in the 1960s and 1970s, and his popularity was retained throughout the 1980s through incessant reruns.

There are few TV shows as consistently compelling as a mystery series. Though lighthearted crime drama TV shows are a fun way to pass the time, there's something uniquely enrapturing about a series that creates a foreboding atmosphere and imparts a sense of dread to the viewer. These series typically incorporate horror and thriller elements into the story and have a cohesive visual style that creates a moody feel as much as the plot. For audiences looking to be immersed in a narrative unafraid to get serious and almost surreal, these shows are perfect.
It's impossible to guess the killer right away in these murder mysteries, as the stories are full of twists and turns that leave the audience guessing until the end. While the crime aspects are vital to the plot, these series are character-driven, focusing on the detectives who take on the investigation and unravel them. The detectives...

In 1987, comedy legend Mel Brooks released Spaceballs, a parody of Star Wars that pit space rogue Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his furry companion Barf (John Candy) against the vile Darth Helmet (Rick Moranis). Star Wars mania had by no means abated by that point — Return of the Jedi had come out four years before — but Spaceballs didn't get its own cult of fans until it came out on home video, which is how watched it when I was a tiny baby in the 1990s. I actually think I watched Spaceballs before I watched Star Wars, and it's still probably first in my heart.
Brooks made a couple of attempts over the years to get a sequel to Spaceballs made, but nothing took; according to Forbes, Moranis once pitched him on a movie called Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II, but it never came together. And so a couple...

Spaceballs 2 has gotten a major progress update from co-writer Josh Gad, who reveals just how far along production is on the upcoming sci-fi comedy sequel. Spaceballs was originally released in 1987, the Mel Brooks-directed movie acting as a parody of Star Wars. The upcoming Spaceballs 2 was announced in June 2024, being developed by Amazon MGM Studios and produced by Gad and Brooks. Gad was also revealed to be writing the script alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Pokmon Detective Pikachu), while also being announced to star in the comedy film.
Speaking with Forbes, Gad revealed the draft script for Spaceballs 2 is complete, and that readers of it have "been blown away." The co-writer and star explained how support from Brooks has been extremely helpful in developing the movie, especially since it coincides with the joke about the sequel Yogurt made in the original. However, he made sure not to give away any surprises.

The actor will produce and star in the film for Amazon MGM Studios and recently revealed that the script’s first draft had been completed.

After becoming widely famous in cartoons and comic books, Casper the Friendly Ghost made the jump to the big screen in 1995, in a live-action/CGI adventure. Directed by Brad Silberling, Casper is the first feature film to have a fully CGI character in the lead role, and it took viewers to Friendship, Maine, to meet the title ghost.

Clint Eastwood was one of the biggest movie stars in the world in 1995, but, up until that point, he was not known for appearing in family-friendly films. CBS' "Rawhide," the television series that launched him in the 1960s, and 1982's "Firefox," with its video game tie-in, are probably his two most kid-appropriate works. "Bronco Billy" and "Honkytonk Man" are also family films in a way, though, really, Eastwood only hit the bullseye with kids when he plopped Clyde the orangutan into the bare-knuckle-brawling adventures of Philo Beddoe in "Every Which Way But Loose" and "Any Which Way You Can" (both of which have no shortage of gleefully raunchy moments).
Eastwood also wasn't known for his romantic dramas, so the summer of 1995 promised to be an outlier for him with his adaptation of Robert James Waller's runaway bestseller "The Bridges of Madison County.

Casper the Friendly Ghost is the friendliest ghost, but he also had a tragic life, dying at a young age and being left to haunt his old family home. He was also much more than the Casper of the 1995 movie starring Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci. Casper started out as a character in the 1930s before reaching the comic book world in the late '40s. After the success of the comics, Casper began popping up in cartoons and later the live-action movie fans adore today.
Unlike other mystical ghosts, Casper isn't scary or malicious. As his name describes, he's a friendly ghost who craves human interaction. '90s kids most likely aren't familiar with the comics or the cartoon from the '30s and '40s, but they are very familiar with the movie, Casper. The movie and the comics reveal little details about his former life, but there...
