Mermaid Down (2019)
Something is wrong with the ratings...
I'll go straight to the point: I did not like this. I really wanted to like it. I tried. I love mermaid stories..... but gosh this was bad. It was confusing and went nowhere with the plot. Some sailors talk about capturing a mermaid, then 2 sec later, wow so lucky, they just happen to catch a mermaid in the sea on the first try! What luck! They cut her tail and then some weird guy shows up from nowhere and ''saves'' her. He just so happen to be a doctor and takes her to his mental house where a bunch of cool girls live (they don't look like patients at all...). Then the mermaid gets all creepy but no wait, she's nice. And then it turns into a YA novel. Then some sort of slasher. And then a lot of mushy stuff and it ends. You're not missing anything. Just a low budget mess.
Serenity (2019)
Not what you think...
Started as a decent thriller... If they had gone this route, this could have been a good 6 out of 10 movie. But nope, they decided to go the weird and artsy route.... You go in for a thriller, come out as spiritual Sci-Fi mess.... really disappointing. What were they thinking? I understand what they tried to do, but for this movie, it does not do it justice at all! Should have stayed a mystery thriller and that's it. Try your fancy twists in a different movie please...
The Nun (2018)
Pretty awful
They could have done such a great horror movie if they relied on atmosphere, with that creepy setting they had! Instead they chose to go the easy route and make a 'in your face' jump-scares film. Nothing was scary about it. The scares were dumb and obvious. Such a shame. It could have been so much more... The lead was great too. Really a waste!
The Isle (2018)
Nope, do not watch
My friend made me watch this because it was supposedly good according to RT, but we both regretted our choice very much. Visually, The Isle looks great. There is some nice scenery here and there. It isn't horror nor thriller, it stays slow and works on building the mood and remains slow throughout the whole feature. Way too slow for its own good. I'm all for building atmosphere, but there just isn't anything here. The story is subpar and the characters don't draw you in. There is clearly a lack of funds here, which doesn't bother me, but still, it shows and it hurts the overall production. The narrative is weak and the film as a whole feels flat and drab. The actors could definitely use an acting class or two. I give it a few points for the nice location, but that's it. We both did not like this movie at all and it made us sleepy, if anything.
