Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Great movie but missed so much
I enjoyed the content of the movie. As an avid Queen fan, It was great to see a commemoration of the life and times of one of the greatest musicians ever.
Yes, I did say it missed a lot. It's going to be hard to fit Freddie Mercurys life into a movie and keep it under 6 hours. In that, the choosing of key highlights kind of made it a bit jumpy and had to work to keep up with the storyline. You see the rise and triumph of Freddie Mercury... but it would also have been good to experience the decline and his final moments. The film needed that to finish it beautifully, rather than just stopping at the Live Aid concert. Freddie went on to do so much more after this concert, and it should have been shown. It feels like there is a sequel in the planning.
Overall, I would recommend this movie for Queen fans. And after you have watched it, jump on YouTube and watch videos of the tribute concert in his honour, it is amazing to see how Freddie touched so many people in his own unique way.
The Titan (2018)
Good cast, good acting, fragmented storyline
It's like the producers, writers and directors watched Species, predator, the Lazarus experiment and a Chinese facility doing genetic experiments on monkeys as a source of ideas. The problem therein lies that a committee did this, and had no direction.
It is said if you put 50 monkeys in a room with typewriters they will eventually write Shakespeare.
We have proof now that it's wrong. It's the script to this movie.
Started amazing and strong. Build up to what... swallowing animal DNA and an injection. Even the non genetiscist in the audience knows that ain't gonna work, but hey. We want them to use nitrogen as an energy source rather than oxygen. And to prove it works, we make them sit in a pool and our hero swims like a porpoise to show off. And I won't get into the nitty gritty of why oxygen is an important component in cellular respiration.... if you want to know that Google or Wikipedia it.
And thats where it falls apart. No clear direction on the storyline, stunted sub plots that just don't grow, it's a sci fi thriller... with no thrills. The build up the end that didn't make any sense. Can't feel the cold anymore... wonderful. Had to Google about Titan and find out that it's temp is -179.5c on a hot day. So there you go, that's why it's in the plot. But why not explain it? The viewer shouldn't have to go to Google mid viewing to learn that. It rains liquid methane... Oh that's why the atmosphere in the pool area contained methane. That makes sense. Again? Why not explain it to the viewer? The ending seems to borrow special fx from Prometheus. And the character of the creator's in the same movie. But then the ending kinda feels like "f... it. My heart isn't in this project any more so that will do"
Kind of alludes to a sequel being done, but please get JJ Abrahms to do it.
I gave it 3 stars for the good start. But the ending is a total let down.
Recovery (2016)
Director needs a new hobby.
First we had Scream. And then more Scream movies. And then movies like Saw franchise upped the game.
This movie is nowhere near either. Basically takes until the final credits to build up, and the description of the movie is far from accurate. I suppose if I got high, it might make more sense.
From the very flat acting, where character depth was not drawn upon. The plot is flimsy at best. There is more suspense in one of Donald Trumps tweets. The hypersexual teenager that tries to pass with a sweet innocence, the acting is that terrible that it makes the Kardashians Oscar worthy. The pathetic use of technology that was used to prop up the whole film, that for a film in 2016 did not seem authentic. And I guess that's the issue with this film. There is no authenticity.
In the horror franchise, the viewer expects a bit of gore. The viewer expects twists, a shock, a jump in the seat and the electric tingle as the protagonist gets what's coming. Jigsaw did this well. This film, well, did not.
If this is collecting dust at the bottom of the 10 for $1 DVD bin, let it be.
