Fear Street: 1978 (2021)
Much better than Part 1!!
I cannot tell you how much better 1978 is than 1994. I actually cred about the characters, since they actually had character development. The story itself was way better. It felt like an actual plot and not a quick concept. Things that happened actually made sense and deaths seemed more realistic and freightening. I actually enjoyed watching the story unfold and for once, cared to remember what was said about Sarah and the curse.
The bad side is that the movie is a bit more older teeanager/young adult oriented. More violence, more gore, more scenes and nudity comes along (albeit briefly). Even with the added "mature" content, this was a way better watch. To be honest, if it had not been for the turn around in this movie, I wouldn't have watched part 3.
If part 1 off put you, give part 2 a try, its actually an enjoyable movie on it's own.
Room 6 (2006)
Could have...Should have..But just wasn't.
I really wanted to enjoy this movie because I liked the actors enough, and the description sounded interesting. But it turned out to definitely be one of those movies where the description was probably the best thing about it.
The acting was very lackluster, the plot line was full of holes and left you wondering what exactly did you just watch. The way it teetered between life-and-death, Heaven and Hell, good and evil, reality or psychotic episode was too much to fully understand what was happening. I could never fully get a grasp on the character development. There were so many characters that were never defined and you had no idea why they were even there, ie. The taxi driver.
The special effects were worse than I've seen in student projects. It seemed like the team played roulette the night before and just came up with a convoluted plot line for a movie, then went with it.
Chloe Grace Moretz was the only beacon of hope, and sadly, she wasn't shown enough to bring any light to the dim, dismal movie. I never got the title, as I was looking for room number 6 the whole time. Maybe I missed it while I was forwarding to try to skip to the end, hoping it would somehow end better. Yes, I utilized the 10 second skip feverently, as the movie seemed to be going nowhere.
The ending was very disappointing because so much was never answered. Too much thrown into one movie. Too much left unanswered. Too many characters that you didn't care about. Not enough of anything remotely good.
I'd skip it unless you have time to kill, and I mean nothing at all to do. I'd even suggest making this your time that you always wanted to learn to knit or paint, or pull that nagging hang nail.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Sadly, just did not feel like Fear Street.
I went in to this with high hopes. As a fan of the Fear Street books and R. L Stine, I was severely let down. The magic of teen horror was replaced with, what felt like a desperate attempt to replicate the Scream or Slasher series.
The plot line was a bit boring and far too predictable to feel fresh. As well, the character development was missing something, like...character. I honestly only cared if one character lived or died, and that was Josh.
The movie falls flat in bringing any special feelings that we had reading the books as teens. It felt like it was trying too hard to be a horror/slasher movie that catered to an adult crowd who wants to see teen sex with their horror. The innocence of that hint of sexuality was nowhere to be found.
The sex, and drug usage was definitely adult material. The characters are supposed to be teens but that is where the similarities end. The scenes for the next movie show a teen girl getting pounded in a sex scene and a half naked girl in an open jean jacket.
I'm not sure I have the stomach to watch the other two installments. I really got excited when I started hearing about the Fear Street movies. Unfortunately, I think this movie might have been one street over. So close, yet not close enough.
Final Exam (1981)
Light on sex and nudity for an 80's horror movie.
The movie itself wasn't terrible, however the acting is a bit bad, even for an 80's film. Courtney was probably the best actor in the entire movie.
That being said, if you want a horror movie to watch with a younger crowd and only covering eyes once, this is it.
Horror without freightening scenes, bloody gore, or vicious killings.
It got 4 stars from me for the acting and slow roll of the movie. But it wasn't too horrible to watch.
L'ultimo squalo (1981)
Fun but not good.
If you are a B and sometimes C movie addict (sci-fi channel) and liked Jaws, then you'll probably at least find entertainment in this. Sure, it was a blatant Jaws ripoff, but was still its own movie.
The acting was somewhat like mine and my sister's reenactment with our Barbies after watching Jaws. The effects were reminiscent of my windup shark toy in the bathtub attacking my scubamen, but don't let bad effects stop you, I usually don't.
Some if the decisions the characters make are very questionable, (the end, no spoliers). But overall, if you're looking to watch a shark movie/ B movie, that's actually not terrible, this is one to consider. Like I said, it's entertaining but not a good movie that I could call good.
I gave a fair review, as I do enjoy low budget, B and C horror movies, I used to live for the weekends to watch the bad Sci-fi channel horror movies, and yes I watched all of the Sharknados. So, I wasn't being harsh with the 3 stars. I just firat, rate as a movie and then review as a movie enthusiast, especially horror films.
Extracurricular (2018)
Why all of the low ratings? It was a hidden gem.
The premise of the movie was not convoluted, it was pretty straight forward. A group of teens who like to kill. There was no hidden agenda, no revenge killings, no sad backstory. I appreciate that is was just some friends who liked to kill (because some sick people do irl).
I thought the movie was smart and reminded me of Murder by Numbers. They didn't care much for human life, but for the most part, cared for eachother. The relationship between the two sons and their father showed that even well loved children go astray in the most macabre ways.
Spencer MacPherson, as younger brother Ian, stole the show. I wanted so badly for him to be the last man standing. Even though I wasn't thrilled with the who, I was ok with the ending. I enjoyed the movie and felt it was a fresh slasher film, especially of late. Sometimes blood and gore doesn't make the movie, and while this one does have its moments, it also has a pretty good storyline.
Accident (2017)
Wtf did I watch and WHY did I watch it!?!?
I apologize for the few spoilers ahead, I only wish I could spoil the whole movie, in order to save you all from such pain. I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemies!
Bad! Not MJ Bad, but rotting trash Bad!! I always try to form my own opinions on things so even after reading the MANY 1 star reviews, I entered at my own risk. Boy, do I ever regret this decision. Terrible acting, terrible lighting, terrible plot. This movie was bad from the very beginning but still I managed to make it till the end. I'm pretty sure I lost a few brain cells along the way. So my advice would be take the reviews to heart and skip this one, unless you're already on a self destructive, downward spiral anyway.
From the ridiculous car accident (steering wheel on wrong side for America btw), Caroline choosing to call her mother instead of 911, Caroline sarcastically snapping at Jess, "You act like this is my fault" (it is btw), Caroline worrying more about Jess getting action in the back seat than she is about hmmm, IDK, say possibly dieing, boring and unnecessary flashback, and a PENCIL in the neck for asthma!! The first 30 minutes should have sent me running for the hills!
But alas, I stayed to finish my suffering like a champ. The helicopter, the guns, the miraculous fight from 2 airhead bimbos, and how this car flipped multiple times, rolled down the hillside, ending at the bottom of a ravine, only suffered minor damage is beyond me. And the people only suffered a bump, some bruises and tiny scratches.....why, I'm still asking myself why! This movie got way too many stars and thats only because we can't give 0!
How I survived this movie is more miraculous than how they all survived that car accident, plunging down a reveen.
I wish I could have killed them as my self respect died off.
Villains (2019)
Brilliant breath of fresh air!
Bill was amazing and Maika was a true doll. I fell for both of them, and their love was sweet. I love the cast all together! Every character was perfectly played out.
You loved to hate and hated to love.
I watched Villians right after I watched The Owners, since both movies have a similar plot. People break into homes where the owners are more than they bargained for. However, The Owners was worth the watch and a bit darker, but Villians was such an enjoyable ride.
After watching the aforementioned movie, I was expecting something different with Villians, but I was so pleasantly surprised. It was fun, it was sensible, it was even heartfelt.
Give this movie a try, you'll be glad you did.
