Ernest Goes to School (1994)
Ernest P. Worrell
If there is any one man walking the earth with a rain cloud over his head, it'd have to be Ernest P. Worrell. He lives by Murphy's Law (if it can go wrong, it will go wrong), and yet remains upbeat and optimistic. This is what makes audiences love this unfortunate do-gooder.
Ernest provides a style of slap-stick comedy that appeals to children and adults alike. He is known for his catch phase "Know what I mean" and addressing an off camera friend named "Vern" by looking directly into the camera. He also has a few reoccurring actors that play different roles but the same basic character in every movie.
The spirit of Jim Varney shows through his comedic acting, and there is no doubt that he loves what he does. Whether being doused with water, tripping, or making an easy task an extremely difficult feat, he seems as though he genuinely enjoys the business of making people laugh and smile.
Bridge to Terabithia (2007)
Un Real Iistic.. in the bad way
There are three main things that bother me about this movie:
1) A world I can't believe in. From kids swaying and singing in music class while sitting on desks, to such a pretty charismatic girl being a social outcast, the "real world" was unbelievable.
2) The plot sucks. From the moment they started showing "the kingdom" to the "issues" the kids face. Totally forced and unrealistic... and boring.
3) The level of shock and grief over the girl's death isn't nearly as intense as it needs to be to be believable. This was a healthy young child who was here one day and gone the next. That is TRAUMATIC. Not just a little bit sad, that is traumatic. Never do we see any of the characters.. especially the father and best friend, acting appropriately.
And in WHAT WORLD would kids be allowed to play where a kid recently got killed?!?!? Only in Terabithia...
Idlewild (2006)
What was this?
My biggest problem is that I don't know what this was. Was this a musical that was too much of a movie, or a movie that was too much of a musical? The problem is you can't blend them. Either it is a musical or it is not- and if that isn't clear from the get-go, the suspension of disbelief will not exist within the work.
From the very beginning of the movie I had a problem with the suspension of disbelief. I didn't like effect of the freeze frames with the expanding pictures during the credits. I didn't like the fact that they were still rolling credits after 16 damn minutes. And when the rooster on the canteen became animated, a little kid barely able to see over the dashboard borrowed a hearse and DROVE it, and another kid's sheet music became animated, I knew that it was about to be a LONG 2 hours...
It was.
Had the music/musical scenes been strongly to my liking, I suppose I could have enjoyed this movie as a guilty pleasure like Prince's "Graffiti Bridge". But the music was horrible. In fact, there was nothing upon which I could found a liking of this movie on any level. From a picture book full of dead people in coffins; Andre's ugly beard and mole; animated characters/musical scenes that just didn't fit- Such as Rooster speeding away for his life in a car and rapping; and two full hours of play time; this movie was simply an unlikable piece of work.
And one last personal pet peeve: The so called "hit song" that Miss Sally B Shelly AKA Angel Davenport was singing that supposedly made her a star, and kept the club packed was.. AN EXTREMELY WACK SONG. Another failure of the suspension of disbelief to exist for me.
Someone commented that this movie was like a African American "Moulin Rouge". Funny thing is that I did think of Moulin Rouge when I first saw the Church club. But Moulin Rouge was enjoyable (even though I never felt the need to see it more than once) primarily because it KNEW what it was- an over the top musical- and the music/musical scenes were VERY good with very strong and memorable songs. Idlewild was exactly the opposite.
This movie had no idea what it was.... at the sad thing is, that this was the least of it's problems...
The 24th Day (2004)
Friggin AWESOME
Very, very, well done. This movie's acting, content, dialog all A+. If it was a "b" movie, I couldn't tell because it looked great. Sends a great message without being preachy. Keeps you emotionally attached at ALL times. Wonderful movie, HIGHLY recommended.

The Nephew (1998)
This movie is a Fairy Tale. That's why I love it.
This movie is one of those feel good movies. It's not realistic, but I don't find that noticeable while I'm watching the film, because it's such a pleasure to watch. The characters are convincing, and very colorful, and I find myself invited to this much simpler world as eager to explore it as the main character, Chad.
While he takes you on a journey of discovering this town, it's people and his family history, it's hard to notice how unrealistically well the townsfolk accept him (the first person of color they've probably ever seen up close); or the nonexistence of a language barrier between Chad and the townsfolk. The storyline is too interesting for this kind of nitpicking.
Under the masquerade of family history there are several love stories. This movie relies heavily on a hopelessly romantic audience. Anyone not wooed by the romantic backbone of the story will probably consider this movie to be only mediocre, for they will focus on the large gap between The Nephew and the real world. But for people who love happy endings and watch movies hoping to see something lighter than real life, this movie is simply a delight.
Since I am one of those people, in my opinion this movie is wonderful.
