Prince of Darkness (1987)
Good God !!
Here in the UK I saw this at the cinema in 1987/1988 ? And was so disappointed. For every great film he made John Carpenter made a stinker-and this stinks...after 35 years it was shown on TV so I thought I'd give it another go,sadly-like milk-it has not aged well. While the premise-a container holding The Devil- is really good its never followed up properly,I always remembered the scene where one of the characters says that after carbon dating it seems that the seal on the container is one million years old, everyone within earshot does not bat an eyelid and carries on despite this shocking find, this little snippet is never mentioned again. This ruined it for me and I sat bored through the rest of the film, glad when it had ended.
Operation Mincemeat (2021)
Why ?
"The Man Who Never Was" is a brilliantly crafted British wartime drama that told a true story, although that film introduced an unnecessary subplot about a German spy,it was still a great example of classic British film making. Why anyone decided to remake it is baffling, the new version contains many subplots that in real life did not happen and the fact the the subject matter is over 70 years old then why wait so long to remake it and why deviate from the source material ?.....I suppose we should be thankful that the Americans did not do the remake,it would have ended up with THEM single handedly winning the war.
The Survivor (1981)
Dead on Arrival
Take a terrifying horror novel-one of the authors best-eviscerate it until barely nothing is left then write an atrocious screenplay and film it,job done...not much more I can add.
Rabid (2019)
No bite.....or teeth.
Being a lifetime David Cronenberg fan I was intrigued by this reboot/remake/update and NO !! I have no problem with the writer's/directors Being two women-who themselves are big Horror buffs...It begins well and the make up is nothing short of extraordinary plus the nod to Cronenberg with the Red surgical scrubs was nice but...it's too long winded, silly in parts and I honestly think I gave up before the end which shows you my level of interest.....it's a tad pretentious and arty but thankfully nothing like that abortion of the remake of Suspiria.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Phantasms (1993)
Wake up.....please wake up.
Almost 26 years since I first watched this episode and sadly time has not been kind to it,why ?...because when you see the writer is Brannon Braga, you know-as with a lot of his later work-that it's going to be as incomprehensible/confusing/stupid as it's possible for him to make it. Braga did a few great stories but this is not one of them and it ranks alongside the stinker that was "Ermergence" as an episode I'd gladly never watch again.....3 stars is being kind.
Gräns (2018)
A dark,disturbing fable.
Is it possible to say a film is really good and that you enjoyed it if it is one of the strangest, darkest, most disturbing films I've seen in many a year ?...I would say yes but.....I felt strangely uncomfortable/unclean after watching it...The writer obviously has a very strange/twisted mind-a bit like myself-maybe that's why I liked it but I can see how it can divide audiences, nontheless if you like something off the wall then give it a go.....but brace yourself before you do.
Motherland: Fort Salem (2020)
The Conjuring
Here in the UK,i stumbled across this on the BBC I=Player.Really not sure if it was for me-I'm a 60 year old man,big GOT fan/Star Trek etc but I gave it a go and I must say how much I enjoyed it.The fact it's full of women as lead characters is no problem at all,in fact it makes it less of a sausage/testosterone fest....only watched episodes 1 & 2 so far, really looking forward to the rest...

Under the Dome (2013)
Same as it ever was..............
Typical King tv rubbish..........EVERY character has to have a flaw/back story-he's gay/she's a bank robber/she killed her ex husband/he embezzled money etc etc........Remember that abortion The Mist or The Langoliers ?,this is Citizen Kane by comparison......
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Redemption II (1991)
Very good but..................Attention to detail
The revelation that Sela is Tasha yar's daughter makes no sense at all.....Tasha was in lost in an alternate timeline when the Enterprise C fought with the Romulans at Nerendra III....If Tasha was wooed by a Romulan then had a baby, the baby would have been born in the alternate timeline and could NOT possibly show up in the present timeline-it simply makes no sense....and I've spent 25 years trying to work it out-it does not compute.
Devs (2020)
Just a moment...............Just a moment
I'm watching this for the first time on BBC2 here in the UK,i know/knew nothing in advance but as it was Alex Garland,i knew it would be either very interesting or some of his usual pretentious twaddle....So far-two episodes in-I'm hooked,it's going to be a journey to see what it's actually about and where it is going....Pity the BBC is putting it out as a 1 hour programme then it's only on for 45 minutes.....SPOILER ALERT update from 15/5/20...Well it's finished and apart from a few quibbles-looking back through time at Christ on the cross (something that probably NEVER actually happened) and the final-we're now living in a simulation schtick-what no Multiverse Living/crossing between worlds ??....I really enjoyed it-even if at times it was painfully slow.......Does this new ending mean Sergei does or does not try to steal the tech from DEVS plus what made him so scared that he had to throw up in the toilet ?
Claimed and Shamed (2012)
Reconstruction anyone ??
This programme simply gets worse as it progresses (sic).....EVERY case involved-where there is no CCTV/Phone etc footage-has the word RECONSTRUCTION popping up every 5 seconds, yes we ALL know they are reconstructions, why does the beeb insist on this Nanny State B.S.all the time ??
Get Out (2017)
Another raved about film with a non original premise
Al though the film is quite good,it's story/plot just seems to be a direct lift from the 1973 British Horror film-Nothing but the Night.....Nothing these days is new/original.
The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Based on "Real Life Events" (?)........Almost..........
Even though The Warrens had NO access in real life to the house in Enfield plus the whole haunting was faked,if you love your horror films then you'll enjoy it,as I did.....But don't be fooled into thinking it really happened.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
A Beguiling finish
Quite why so many people-mainly those in the U.S.A.-seem to hate this episode is beyond me-mind you baring in mind the changing of Philosophers stone to Sorcerers in the Harry Potter franchise because Americans have no idea what a Philosopher is really says it all.....I loved this episode,i have no complaints I'm just sad it's all over. The millions of fans over here in the U.K.who loved it are proof of that great adage-Make America Less Stupid (Again).
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
Critics-Get A Grip
Quite why a minority of people slated this episode is beyond me...and as for Dany torching Kings Landing-never heard of Blind Rage ?
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
To Boldy Come To A Full Stop
Here in the UK,i first saw Star Trek back in 1969-i was 8 years old.Since that day I've been-and still am-an avowed Trek nerd.I loved all the incarnations-even though 75% of ST:Voyager's episodes stunk and was looking forward to this reboot/remake...Sadly-as most of the reviews have said on here-it's pretty awful, too PC...trying to be all things to all colours/races/genders etc etc...It has non of the charm/wit of ANY of it's previous incarnations,it's badly written/paced and redundant of any saving graces...All the reviews on here have spelled it out far better than I could and I really believe this abomination should never have been given 1 season let alone 2.....For how to do things properly, look to the reboot of Lost in Space to see the CORRECT way of re-imagining a classic.
