Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
A Thinking Woman's Lifetime Movie
Allison is stuck in a decade-long co-dependent marriage to loser Kevin. Allison does not have enough confidence to simply leave him, so she sticks by him, doing his laundry, setting up Alexa, and cleaning up after him. Kevin is a cartoonishly selfish and unsuccessful working class dope, and Allison also works in a dead-end job at a liquor store ("package store" in New England parlance).
Each week we watch Allison flail about trying to overcome her dependency on Kevin, and we watch the Kevin "sitcom" sequences that set up each setback for Allison. After rejecting the idea of simply walking out on Kevin, she hits upon the idea of killing him. This is another avoidance technique, since Allison is so incompetent and "nice" she can't even buy the drugs to poison him with, in a town full of drug dealers.
Allison tries unsuccessfully to flirt with diner owner Sam, who it turns out is happily married and has got his life back on track. Sam is a "nice guy" that Allison liked in high school.
Eventually Allison hooks up with dreary neighbor Patty, a small time drug-dealing beauty shop owner. Patty's live-in boyfriend is Kurt, a milquetoast "nice guy" that Patty does not respect or like. Patty is the sister of Kevin's goofy pal Neil, and was originally depicted as being on Kevin's side. In later episodes Allison and Patty develop a "Thelma & Louise Break Bad" vibe as they set off on a dysfunctional quest to buy drugs after Patty's supplier gets busted.
The sitcom sequences go a little long sometimes, especially the Escape Room episode. We know what will happen; we've seen every episode 1,000 times. On the plus side, we are shown that unlike in regular sitcoms, there are consequences to Kevin's actions. The coffee table in Episode 1 gets smashed, and repaired with duct tape. In each successive episode the coffee table remains duct taped.
Overall we wish Allison luck and she'll need it. She will not be able to murder Kevin. We can picture him spilling the drink with the dissolved drugs, probably on Allison, and those were Allison's last pills, yada yada. Even the show title has Kevin's name in it, which gives away the fact that the viewers and Allison are stuck with him.
The Chocolate War (1988)
Archie's Existential Hell
At the very end of the movie we see Archie's ultimate misery: Being made scribe to Obie's childish assigner. "Get a naked picture of his mom for us", "Make him eat a booger in front of everyone". The sheer banality of these assignments compared to Archie's elegant Machiavellianism is more than enough punishment for him, and it's genius. I don't know if this was in the book, and I think I'll go and get a copy to see for myself!
