Vyzov (2023)
Amazing!
Excellent movie, the best one I've seen in several years. Even though it's a long movie, I've watched it several times for the unique atmosphere, a mix of calm professionalism usual for reality-based space dramas, and the hectic, loud drama of medical emergency situations.
Yula Peresild was great, and watching her, knowing that she's actually in space, was something different. At first I thought it an unnecessary stunt of Dmitriy Rogozin, then-head of Roscosmos, to actually send actors to space. I couldn't be more wrong! Yula really knows how to convey emotions, how to make the viewers feel what her character feels. And in this movie, she helps us to catch a glimpse of the feelings that she felt, being in space for the first time. That was quite unexpected... wow.
Dikaya (2022)
Actually a pretty good movie
It has a specific character, good humor but also some seriously tense and dramatic moments. It combines well modern and native elements. The two heroines are very well written and the actresses did their jobs also very well - I will definitely look up more titles with Bezryadnova, she is fun to watch. Overall an unexpected gem of Russian film-making. It would definitely deserve an English version.
The War Below (2021)
A disappointment
Too much emotion, too little structure. It's not a complete waste of time, but it cannot compare to Beneath Hill 60.
The World at War (1973)
Not really a WWII documentary
This series is old. Since its production we've learned a lot more about the history of WWII, and we can point at many things in WAW that we now know are not accurate or are missing. If you want all the details of WWII, go read some books. There's a lot of them, some about the most ridiculous details. However, if you want to learn about us, watch this series. It will change you forever. On the background of all the facts, all the military operations, all the suffering, defeats and victories, the authors have succeeded in creating an account of humanity at its worst and at its best and the most powerful anti-war statement I've ever seen. Our great-grandfathers have dearly paid for the peace they have given us, and we should be ashamed if we ever take it for granted.
The Break-Up (2006)
What is it?
What was this movie about actually? Trying to make a skeleton of a messed-up relationship crisis? The movie wasn't too bad, Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn are decent actors, and it had some fun - in the first half of it. The second half... well, it changed from comedy to drama, and it went all downhill too fast for me. I've seen similar problems, I've lived through them, and what's in the movie is just a skeleton, which tries to squeeze into a couple of weeks, what usually takes at least a couple of months (or more likely a couple of years). In my opinion, Jennifer's character got burned-out too quickly, and Vince's got mature in even less likely time. In the end, it all seemed to me like if the writer of the script wanted to make a romantic comedy at first, and then in the middle of it decided that a happy end is too cheap - but was too lazy to rewrite the first half again. If they would concentrate more on one important event, or one specific aspect of the problem, it would be OK. But now it all looks kinda flat to me. The main features of the break-up process are OK, but between them is just empty space. I've seen a lot movies with only a fraction of the budget picturing the whole drama of the ego-contra-feelings fight much better, and I would guess that the movie was only about using Jennifer's looks and Vince's talent to make some money. It didn't touch me emotionally at all, and I am usually very emotional (and I have enough experience to bond with the characters).
Elizabethtown (2005)
If you liked Pride and Prejudice (the good one), you will love this movie.
This movie is definitely worth watching, and you will enjoy it better the second or third time you see it. The reason being that it doesn't tell us a story of one event - a funeral, but rather allows us to observe two young people dancing around each other. The reason I compare it to Pride and Prejudice is because I consider the psychology of the main characters being the focus of this movie. Although it's not described in so much detail and it certainly doesn't take some six hours as the (good) P&P, it is very funny to watch the way Claire and Drew's acquaintance develops. You could put Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey into the movie (well, maybe I wouldn't risk Spacey, just to be sure), and in the end you would still have just Claire and Drew, laughing and talking and trying to look relaxed... and it's really fun. The result is - don't mind the simple story. Observe the characters, try to understand them - and you will greatly enjoy it.
