Blood Sisters (2022)
Subpar storyline but with terrific acting
If you're a fan of crime thriller movies, this movie might slightly interest you. Slightly because they'll be no moment that'll keep you on the edge of your seat-and a couple of scenes are cringeworthy. The plot is infuriatingly weak considering the stellar cast and great acting on display.
There's lots of positive with this series though and you're bound to still appreciate some moments in it. Big kudos to the production cast as the cinematography is one of the best I've seen in recent Nollywood productions.
Knives Out (2019)
A modern-classic crime movie!
Knives Out is a brilliant crime movie that actually keeps the suspense nearly air tight up until the final credits.
The acting was quite top notch and all of the cast delivered their scenes delightfully. The film progresses quite quickly and when you think the show's over, you're taken on another thrilling ride.
The infusion of comedy makes this more a joy to watch alongside the racketeering of rich large families which was equally brought to the foray.
While the key piece of the plot hinged on the main character's medical condition, which seemed quite fictitious, it added a new perspective to the movie.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
DC made a teenage Harley Quinn movie!
I'm lost for words as to how distasteful this movie was. I've always been skeptical about Margie Robbie's interpretation of Harley Quinn and this movie just ascertained my opinions.
Overly childish and pretty immature, this movie was badly scripted and made me cringe more times than I can count.
The plot was all over the place (despite being overly predictable) and DC is now forcing us to accept a version of Harley Quinn that goes against everything we've come to know her for. Where's the fierce, saddistic and ingenious character that we've come to love through the comic books?
There were very few highs in this movie and numerous lows. The only thing you'd mostly remember is the high pitched squealing from Harley everytime she attempts to talk.
P. S. Whoever casted the other 3 lead actresses needs to consider a different career path.
King of Boys (2018)
One of Nollywood's finest!
I've had my reservations for Nollywood movies considering their long history of poor production. But this movie is a slow burner, that gets better as it progresses.
It draws the audience into the dark world of political power and the consequences of conquest-while spinning a vivid tale of an unlikely hero.
The lead actor's delivery was subliminal and this would've been a masterpiece if same could be said for the entire production. The gapping holes that persist in Nollywood movies remained as there were visible loopholes in scripting, acting, directing and cinematography, albeit at a minimal degree.
Nonetheless, this movie is head and shoulders above most productions and was quite entertaining to watch.
A Fall from Grace (2020)
Zero star if IMDb allowed it!
I want to go all out and tell you why this movie is so amateur, but it'll be a day's job.
Awful cinematography, terrible acting, atrocious plot, convulated scenes and brain-torturing drama.
This is a Tyler Perry disasterclass that was probably written by an intern in his production company.
Frozen II (2019)
You'd love it if you're 10 years and below.
I honestly wonder why a lot of people (particularly adults) are giving this high ratings.
Frozen 2 was a musical that failed at being a musical. Aside from the annoying transition from dialogue to less than inspiring singing, this movie had a plot that wasn't as excited as the prequel and seemed quite forced.
The cinematography alongside the animations were great as usual, however, for a family movie, this movie appeals only to the younger generation (I'm talking 10 years and below).
Overall, good moral lessons but just not the same hearth-felt depth and story progression as the first installment.
Fantasy Island (2020)
A movie to waste time. Literally!
Watched this movie 'accidentally' without reading a synopsis or watching a trailer and I must say, it's a cinematic mess.
Now, this movie is supposed to be a horror, comedy and thriller film but struggles at everything. Being a movie adaptation, you'd expect an improvement on the plot, but this movie ended up having the worst movie plot I've seen in a while.
The convulated plot makes this movie very difficult to enjoy, in addition to the washed out jokes and terrible acting.
My final verdict: Watch this only if you're bored with nothing else to spend your time on. You're guaranteed a laugh, only it'll be satirical.
21 Bridges (2019)
For lovers of cliché plots
Does Hollywood never get bored of the good cop-bad cop stories? At least innovate a bit with the script if you absolutely must.
I watched this movie without seeing the trailer, else I would've lowered my expectations. The storyline is overly predictable and save for some action scenes, this would've been an absolute snooze fest.
Personally, I feel the lead actor could've done a lot better with his delivery. Ultimately, there's really no major take out from this movie.
It's not the worst movie you'd see, but it's not an Oscar winning one either (and by a million mile).
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Watching this once may never be enough!
After avoiding this movie for years, a friend of mine pulled this out of the archives and literally forced me to watch this. I can say, it's one of the best movie decisions I have made in recent times.
From start to finish, this movie would leave you on the edge of your seat with your heart in your mouth. Not because of the suspense, but the incredible attention to detail, the mellifluous singing, choreography and the bodacious diversity it potrays.
I'm not a huge fan of musicals but I absolutely enjoyed this piece as the snergy between the actors and the smooth transition between scenes made this an absolute joy to watch.
Aquaman (2018)
Best DCU movie since The Dark Knight
After the abysmal Justice League movie I was more than reluctant to see this movie.
However, I can explicitly say it is the best movie to come of DC Universe since the legendary Christopher Nolan's Batman series.
The first thing you notice about this movie is the sfx, which was spot on, especially the fantastic camera angles during fighting scenes.
While the storyline was particularly weak, there were still scenes that delivered an emotional performance (thanks to the dramatic music by the way).
Acting wasn't particularly great though, but it's forgivable.
Nonetheless, this was a movie I thoroughly enjoyed, as it was fast paced, had great visuals, and signalled hope for the DCU.
Lionheart (2018)
One-way traffic plot, average movie at best.
Lionheart was a movie that generated a lot of buzz in the Nollywood industry. Considering the international support it got from Netflix, I was particularly excited to see how this movie went.
From the get go the movie wears an indigenous look with local scenery and an instant banter in local language.
However, it was one way traffic from there onwards, as the movie progressed.
The plot is totally bare and overly predictable, and I'm still reeling from the shock of this being a comedy film.
However, I still applaud the production quality of this film as it was great and a large chunk of the headline cast delivered on their script-save for Peter Okoye who was highly disappointing.
For a directorial debut, one can only applaud the courage of Genevieve in pulling off this movie.
On a final note, you are not guaranteed to have a good time watching this, and do not expect any fireworks.
