Into the Grizzly Maze (2015)
As far as "rogue animal attack" movies go, this was excellent.
Don't let the low star reviews here deter you from watching this movie.
What do people want out of this genre of film?
- a decent backstory for the characters outside of the rogue animal
- a good incentive for the animal to go bezerk (backstory for the animal)
- good kills/body count
- minimal CGI
- not shying away from showing the gore/kills
- tension/mystery/thrill of an adventure + chase scenes
This movie checks all these boxes. Stop comparing these movies to the classics or Hollywood's greatest hits. The standard is different for each genre. As far as this genre goes, ITGM is a great watch.
The Batman (2022)
Overhyped. A solid 7.
Pros: (green checks mean exceptionally great)
- Detective Batman ✅
- Atmosphere & colors were all good
- Score was decent
- Villains ✅
- Action/fighting scenes ✅
- Pattinson played a good Batman
- Kravitz cat woman was great
- Colin Ferrell had the best performance ✅
- Car chase scene was incredible ✅
- Bruce Wayne's house was VERY Batman esque ✅
- Alfred retaining the role of a former MI6 agent and back to helping with detective work - like the comics
- Details in shots were on point throughout.
Cons:
- The dichotomy between Bruce Wayne & Batman was nonexistent. They were the exact same throughout - "Bruce Wayne" is supposed to be a facade for Batman - the REAL Bruce Wayne. But they were written exactly the same throughout the film.
- Motivation for Batman unexplained. Why is a rich billionaire dressing up as a bat and fighting criminals? Why isn't he using his money to do good/charity, and why is he doing all of this the way he is? No explanation given.
- The virtue of Batman helping innocent people by fighting criminality and creating inspiration in people to fight criminality is flipped on its head subtly throughout the movie and then completely destroyed by end of film.
- Fighting criminality doesn't actually help innocent people according to this movie. Batman has to stop being Batman. He has to go into MSG and lead people with torch, evacuate people, etc and be a firefighter instead and stop fighting criminals. Fundamental betrayal of Batman.
- It almost seems like the creators of the movie do not like Batman. They draw the constant correlation between Riddler "attacking criminals" and Batman fighting criminals - and use that as a bargaining chip for their final point that "both are bad" (vengeance). So basically Batman is no different than the criminals.
- Motivation for Riddler blowing up the city at the end is unknown. It's inconsistent with his persona throughout the film - wanting to "unmask" the truth and reveal the reality of the political corruption in Gotham. But the last act with the vans blowing up etc was not explained nor consistent.
- Biggest issue is the betrayal to Batman's role/character/purpose - fighting crime, which they assert is wrong and no different than Riddler etc. - and then juxtaposing that to being a firefighter helping people out with a torch etc. "defund Batman" lol and replace him with a "helping hand" humanitarian. He should be helping old ladies cross the street not fighting crime!
- Batman is also 5 minutes too late every step of the way. He cracks the puzzle just too late every time, so there's really no point - he doesn't actually PREVENT anything. He only does damage control after the fact.
- Intro scene was weak.
American Gangster (2007)
Good Movie...but very Anti-Climactic.
I found Russel Crowe's character to be very unlikeable. The movie itself was good and worth the watch, however much of it resembled Scarface and earlier drug kingpin gangster films. I was hoping for a bigger twist or "gotchya" moment where Frank outwits Robbie, but that never came. It was mainly just Frank setting up his imports & distribution from Bangkok, employing his family, establishing his presence in Harlem, living lavishly, and then Robbie doing his basic investigation (catch the weakest link in the chain on a charge, threaten with prison time if he doesn't snitch), and busting the heroin scene. No big shoot offs, no fights or confrontations, nothing special. Frank goes out quite softly and I felt that the story was anti-climactic. I was hoping for Frank to have somehow found out that he was being snitched on, lays a trap and false trail out for the cops.. meanwhile getting his real imports elsewhere, etc. But the way it turned out wasn't very satisfying.
Salinui chueok (2003)
Powerful And Scary
This movie was very tense and sary. The mystery throughout it all kept me hooked. It got me into Korean movies.
Stonehearst Asylum (2014)
Nice Asylum Romance Film
This movie wasn't scary. It had creepy elements in it, but it wasn't a horror film. It's more of a Psychological Mystery and Romance. Unique and even had elements of Shutter Island vibes.
Session 9 (2001)
No Jumpscares. Pure Raw And Genuinely Creepy Plot
This movie was creepy and had all the right plot points and steady character revelations. Asylum movies generally revolve around the same kind of plot points but this movie was unique.
The Devil Rides Out (1968)
Good For What It Was, And For Its Time
This is a 1968 film. So living the majority of my life in the 21st century, it's not always easy for me to watch super-old films. But, this was one of those that I enjoyed and I could say was quite creepy. It had elements of Satanism, the Occult, and general murder vibes. Christopher Lee was fantastic as always. It's worth watching if you like the genre.
