The English (2022)
I can see the vision - not quite there
This started out superb. Absolutely gorgeous vistas, extremely impressive set design, and super showy dialogue. Emily blunt is always the best. And I loved her partnership with the male lead. But as the episodes went on, the cracks began to show. The timelines and plot order were convoluted for no reason. Episode 4 was a real upset for me. Completely took me out of the storyline they worked so hard to establish, unnecessary time spent on characters (that I couldn't understand an actual word of). I feel like they spent way too much time on some moments, and glossed over very important ones that should have been shown (cough cough black eyed mog). And a note to the filmmakers - your audience is not totally dense. You do not need to type out the location and time period of every single opening shot. We are capable of following plot.
House of the Dragon: The Princess and the Queen (2022)
Complete tonal shift from the first 5 eps
This is the first time I've felt completely out on this show. The character switch ups were abrupt and didn't fit the younger actresses playing them at all. Olivia Cooke is GOING FOR IT and it's just not for me at all. Also, a prequel to the phenomenon that was GoT and it's amazing kid actors and they couldn't find better ones than these?? From the beginning the child actors on GoT where believable. These guys aren't cutting it. My main problem, the whole show is centered on Rhaenyra and Alicent and I feel like we barely get time with them in this episode. If this show is solely going to center on which of their kids ascend the throne then I admit I'm out. Weak episode for sure.
Fear Street: 1978 (2021)
Not as good as the firat
Wow, was shocked at how crappy this one was. So many meaningless scenes, plot didn't make sense. The first one was so much better.
In the Earth (2021)
Try hard
Oh lord, this poor director is trying to achieve Ari Aster levels, but fails entirely. The two leads are surprisingly chill with everything they go through. The plot makes no sense, nothing much happens, and the motivations are bizarre. Major letdown.
Babyteeth (2019)
Fancy a cry?
Hi, just cried 16 times to this film. It was lovely, well made, but goddamn y'all, it was sad. I'm on my period, so this was just what I needed right about now. Gonna go dream about Tony Wallace. G'day and G'night.
Dare Me (2019)
Oh lord...
This show is just downright bad. Acting abysmal, storyline cliche, screenplay vacant. I get what they were trying to do, and it flat out does not work at all.
In My Skin (2018)
You need to watch
This is a very important character study into the mind of a teen that is struggling beyond the limits any teen thinks they can comprehend. And she does so, exquisitely.
Succession (2018)
Best show of 2018 so far
What can I say about this show. It turns out, a lot. It is a slow burn that snuck up on me very unexpectedly. When I started it, I didn't care about these rich, spoiled, annoying people. I struggled to get through the first 3 episodes. But then, around episode 4-5, something happened. I started caring. I noticed all the great nuances and subtle things the writers were doing. I started feeling for these characters. The show really takes off the second half of the season, with some of the most riveting television I've seen in some time. I live for the interactions between Tom and Greg, I gasped for air at scene between Rava and Kendall. Marcia is a true enigma. Shiv is a revelation. Logan confounds me. This show lives and breathes between quiet, stolen moments, and thrives on huge family gatherings. I truly cannot wait to see what the coming seasons bring.
