Lovecraft Country (2020)
The sex is on-brand for HBO
This story could just as easily be told without sex. There is SO MUCH unnecessary sex! Hetero, Homo....the sex is explicit and rampant. What could have been appropriate for teenagers to view, turns into an unnecessary X-rated skin show. Lastly, a man is SODOMIZED with a 3 inch stiletto!!!!! Repeatedly! At least 5 times. The scenes of racism depicted in LC, are tame rated G compared to the sex scenes. I have found LC interesting up until Episode 5. After that, I will no longer be tuning in-I'll just read spoiler reviews on Monday morning.
Guava Island (2019)
Worth the wait. Sad it ended
This was vibrant. I loved the intro. Rihanna's voice is vibrant, multi-layered, colorful... perfect island fusion. She was cast perfectly for that alone.
I had more "best friend where we might become lovers one day" vibes from Rihanna and Donald than lovers for years years. I wanted more. A kiss. Grieving, tears, teeth gnashing and pulling her hair out at the end.
I felt like I was watching Rihanna's "Man Down" video in some parts-and it worked.
Although "Summertime Magic" and "It feels like Summer" were PERFECT, "This is America " is beyond played out and I rolled my eyes at that part.
I like Letitia Wright, but she was totally wasted in this movie and her role.
I was not expecting Deni to die at the end. Seriously? I loved the movie. I only wish it were longer and actually showed us aftermath of Deni's death and his son. Did his son carry his legacy on? What happened to Kofi? Did she go back to work in factory? Did she become a militant revolutionary? I swear I thought his maid was poisoning his breakfast at one point.
All in all, the Spanish language speaking parts felt unnecessary, as neither Donald nor Rihanna replied with anything more than "si" or "denada".
Overall, loved it!
Us (2019)
Such a letdown. US was just "OK"
First off....Lupita Nyongo was/is OVERHYPED in this role!!!!! OMG. The tethered version of her was way better than her normal person role. She, Winston Duke and the son Jason were severely overcast. The 2 young girl leads as well as Elisabeth Moss's entire family were spot on! Madison Curry as young Adelaide made this movie for me. Her parents were also decent in their roles. I don't usually care about plot holes, BUT I REALLY WISH J.P. would have shown us detail into the new Adelaide's transition and what happened to the stolen Adelaide. I wish he had shown new Adelaide in old Adelaide's home, interaction with parents, friends, etc. Is Winston Duke English? Both he and Lupita had these accents that kept coming out....were they meant to be "bougie" black people who talked white? Or is that their normal accents???? Didn't care for Winston Duke's 6 foot tall oafish demeanor. Loved the visual of the Tethered holding hands at the end and throughout the movie. Best parts of ENTIRE MOVIE was the amusement park scenes and when the tethered were mirroring what their doubles were doing above ground. More background would have been great in the underground tunnels....maybe if Adelaide had walked into a scientists/doctor's office/lab and saw some old photos, maps of tunnels, a binder telling us about experiments....SOMETHING!!!!! Would not pay to see this again. Again, young Adelaide/Madison Curry MADE THIS MOVIE for me. She carried. Lupita....I actually wished the above ground Lupita died. Ugh.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
Season 2 not living up to Season 1 so far...
Season 1 was a total and pleasantly wonderful surprise! I couldn't get enough of it and eagerly awaited Season 2! Fast-forward through first 7 episodes and I am not pleased.
I am not anti-Semitic and I know absolutely no Jewish people. Being so, I have no Jewish friends either. What's problematic is the Weissman's and Maisel's are the ONLY Jewish people "I know", and although characters of fiction, they embody typically every stereotypical, racist caricature of Jewish peoples that I have seen growing up, in history books, in Nazi/WWII movies, etc. That is horrible. While I enjoyed the characters of the Weissmans and Maisels in season 1, they are downright despicable, pretentious, snooty, snobby, upper class, elitist, arrogant individuals. Somehow JOEL-in addition to Susie and Benjamin are my favorites this season. In this same vein, there are some glaringly offensive comments towards Jesus and Christianity this season that have made me bristle and almost stop watching. The character "Astrid" makes me so sad and sympathetic to her blind loyalty to her new converted Jewish faith and her impossible longing to fit in and be liked by the Weissmans. The Catskills episodes dragged on, as did Paris but Paris was more enjoyable. The running gag regarding Susie's gender is beyond tired and over-used. Susie may not look like nor dress like Miriam but she clearly is and looks like a woman. I brought she could pass for a pretty Joe Pesci Season 1, but not Season 2...and the toilet plunger in the Catskills???? Really. Come on...I hope this season ends better than it's starting for me.
Smallfoot (2018)
Boring, unattractive animation
This is the worst kids movie I have seen in a long time. I only stayed awake because we were at a dinner theater and I was continuously eating. My husband was able to take an hour nap. "Smallfoot" was not as horrible as "Norm of the North" but it's a close second. Lebron James and Zendaya were the best parts of this whole movie. Hated Common and Danny Devito's voice over work/characters. Their voices did NOT work for me. I kept hearing/seeing The Lorax everytime Danny Devito spoke. Likewise, I kept seeing/hearing "Peter Rabbit" everytime James Cordon spoke. Frustrating and distracting. Did not like this movie-at all. DEFINITELY wait for Redbox or better yet Netflix.
The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
Could have still been great without Demonic and Blood Magic parts....
As a movie goer, I loved this movie. As a Christian, the parts with images of Satan, actual demons, pentagrams, and Blood Magic spells were a little too much and so unnessary. No, I have not read the book, but it hit a little too close to home as it loterally felt like we were watchinh real spells, demons and incantations. I knew little of the movie going in other than it had to do with a haunted house, clocks and maybe some magic. Kate Blanchette absolutely shone in this movie. she is so versatile and multi-facefed. Jack Black delivered as he always does. he is hilarious and I love watching him fill a screen. Even the kid who is the main character Lewis was great and cast perfectly. loved the diversity in the sch ool children. very beautifully made and love the colors, lighting, mood, atmosphere. 8/10 for the uncessary Satan and demonic imagery.
Nappily Ever After (2018)
Horribly Disappointed
We've all waited months for this Netflix release. unfortunately, I hated it. I fell asleep on it 3 times. Lynn Whitfield who was AMAZING in "Women of Brewster Place", "Jospehine Baker Story", even "Thin Line Between Love and Hate is overly typecast as the bourgeois mother who is BITCH and is never happy with the lower social class man her daughter falls in love with (°Greenleaf", "Made a Family Reunion", "Happily Ever After". Ricky Whittle was underutilized big time in this role....I mean come on, "American Gods".While I loved Ernie Hudson as always, Sanaa was missing "something" in this movie too me. her role felt way too similar to her Kenya McQueen in "Something New". and while I like Lyric Bent, they had zero chemistry. He would have been great with Grace from Greenleaf...or someone, but I just wasn't into them as a couple. His little girl was annoying and I found it hard to believe that she and Violet would still see each other socially after her Dad and Violet cooled things off. This movie felt cheap. Sanaa did not bring her A game at all. I loved that she went bald and natural for this movie and I could relate to the high and lows of emotions she felt during her big chop, but other than tgat...this movie did nothing for me. At all. Lynn Whitfield ruined it for me and the guy from "Sister sister" could have been played by anyone else. Sorry Sanaa and Netflix, y'all missed the mark with this one for me.
Incredibles 2 (2018)
THIS IS NOT A STANDARD KIDS MOVIE
****** Parents beware ***** This movie blew my mind. I'm a fan of Pixar and loved "The Incredibles". However, this movie is not a regular Pixar movie. The things that stand out most are 2 CURSE WORDS! One character says "hell" (as in how in the hell will they pull that off?). She also says DAMN!!!!!! An animated Disney/Pixar character. As well, this same character later carries 2 brown liquids in a glass to Mrs. Parr/Elastigirl and says "is it too early to drink?" Seriously Disney!?!?! My kiddos and I walked out. Also, this Incredbidles is extremely dark compared to the first and seems like an animated Marvel or D.C. Comics Pixar movie. Not impressed. Not a fan. This was a let down.
