You've Got Mail (1998)
Romance from an innocent era.
You've Got Mail has the virtue of delivering exactly what's expected from it. It's a feel-good movie that offers enough comedy and romance to warm the heart without risking a sentimental overdose. Fans of Sleepless in Seattle will almost certainly fall in love with the similar-yet-different nature of the production; only die-hard cynics will be turned off by all of the unabashed good will. If there are messages to be found here, they're that romance is still thriving in our technological era, and that well-written romantic comedies starring Hanks and Ryan don't represent much of a gamble for the financing studio. This is classic top notch Hollywood movie magic.
The Core (2003)
Preposterous but involving B movie with A list faces.
I often found this movie playing on late night HBO and cable. This is a decent sci-fi movie featuring a preposterous plot and some A list faces. Although the Core came out in 2003 it seems more like a product of the mid-late 90s disaster films. Similar look, basic premise and big stars- recipe for the holiday blockbuster. But The Core was panned by critics as I recall and one look at the wiki page tells me it was a box office dud failing to recoup its production budget. But it's alright film if you can shut your brains down. It's so bad its good and for such films scientific accuracy or common sense should not be used.
Monsters (2010)
Great lower budgeted science fiction.
Monsters is a character study first and foremost and the aliens serve less to be menacing threats and more as a symbol. No wonder the director was chosen to make the much costlier Godzilla based on this film (and even in Godzilla he barely shows the giant reptile) and he is one young director to keep an eye on. The acting is good especially considering the low budget nature of the film and the effects are decent whenever they're used.
Full Body Massage (1995)
Softcore erotica but with some themes.
Nicholas Roeg is an auteur and Full Body Message is his television movie made with the gorgeously voluminous Mimi Rogers. No doubt this is what everyone will speak of- and indeed much discussion on the film solely rests on Miss Rogers assets. The story is simple: An art gallery owner gets her weekly massage from a man she is attracted to. One day he does not show up and instead there is a somewhat older man at her disposal. She agrees and we hear their banter on life and everything. This is an erotic film but the way it is shot and filmed will have you not aroused but engrossed. Mimi Rogers and Bryan Brown are too good an actors to screw this up and the cinematography is really good. A strange but rather good TV movie.
Stephen Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive (2006)
An honest look at the terrible disease of the mind-depression.
Tephen Fry the celebrated Englishman is a manic depressive and it takes a lot of courage to come out publicly let alone come out to the wide world in a documentary but this is a great effort by the comedian and he charts not just his battle with this disorder but its widespread effects and the ways one can try to work around it. Many are still confused as to what depression is and how devastating it can be- This is the documentary to show them.
The Crush (1993)
A decent film about obsession featuring a young gorgeous Alicia Silverstone.
The film that probably got Alicia Silverstone noticed by Hollywood The Crush is a new take on the young teenage being obsessed with an older man. Cary Elwes is alright though he doesn't have much to do but Silverstone is pretty good- It is strange to see her absent lately as she clearly has that star factor going for her. Go see it for her.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
(Unmissable if you are a cinephile)
Quentin Tarantino is a master auteur and the hateful eight shows why: Shot on pristine 65mm film stock and lacking any CGI or blatant special effects the Hateful eight harkens back to the golden age of cinema.
