Revenge of the Pontianak (2019)
As Expected
There's nothing much one can do with a story like Pontianak; pretty much everything is predictable. However, I do appreciate the efforts that they took to accurately portray Malaysia in the 50's. The cinematography and colours are simply beautiful.
The thing that bugged me was Mina's character. I know that she is the antagonist by default but I felt like her character could be written better, like she could've prevented her own death by not provoking an obviously unstable man.
Till Death: Azalea's Wrath (2019)
Old Trope, Refreshing Story.
In an era of cheap jumpscares in horror movies, a compelling narrative is certainly a rare find and Azalea's Wrath is one of it. The cast we're selected amazingly as they set the tone for a realistic story. From the protagonists, antagonists, and the side characters, the chemistry is undeniably natural.
The only thing I didn't like was the ending.
Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
Unexpectedly Predictable
Right off the bat, our main character does questionable police work and that really turned me off from enjoying the film. An example is when he demanded to enter an enclosure in the zoo when chasing a suspect without thinking if there are any animals in it; and as expected, the suspect is gone and he was greeted by grumpy lions. This isn't the only instance where he does things without thinking, when questioning a possessed and possibly violent lady about something, our main character sticks his arm in her cell to show her pictures from his phone; again, as expected, the possessed lady bit him. His wife is also somewhat annoying, dismissing their daughter's fear without further investigating anything. The film could've had potential but the characters were written poorly.
Anyway, for the positive part. The cinematography, visuals and audio were great and I enjoyed almost everything else, except for the way the characters are written.
No offence to the real Ralph Sarchie and other characters.
Bi an Zhi Jia (2020)
Unexpected but in a mediocre way.
If you read the book, this adaptation will disappoint you. As someone from the Baba nyonya culture, I felt that the series isn't an authentic representation; though, I'll give them credit for attempting to include a few elements here and there. I tried to watch the series as something separate from its source material but I still don't enjoy it. The ending is so cheesy.
Ironically, the only one I'm rooting for in this series is Tian Ching.
