Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Great visuals. Plot was rubbish
Awesome looking, but an utter fail with a terrible plot. Was it written for children, or just people who had already switched off their brains prior to entering the cinema?
Spoiler alert:
- starships, but still need manned guns?
- it was OK to use what appeared to be nuclear powered engines to land at start of the movie, setting fire to massive areas. Why not just land on the island area in question that was hosting the resistance?
- there could be an argument that the bad guys didn't want to damage the environment. Sorry, doesn't work. The colonel was made out as some nuts Marine with a mindset from Vietnam, eg the burning of villages. If you're going down that line of mindset, carry on with what the USAF did, which was enormous bombing of the HO chi min trail, to the point where it looked worse that WW1 no man's land
- why the need for the cure for old age? There was already a reason to be on the planet, had that simply gone away?
- the "ship" was an ekranoplan style design, as per the "Caspian sea monster". Cool idea, but rubbish in high seas, so not genuinely viable on the world in question
- Nuclear engines, but still using current tech guns?
The War Below (2021)
Entertaining, but why did they play with the historical accuracy?
Gave it a good 7/10 as it was a genuinely enjoyable film, portraying a team of miners.
The reality was that there wasn't simply five miners. There were enough to dig over 22 tunnels and move 500 tons of explosives.
So whilst I get that the budget might be insufficient to "show" that many people engaged, why not at least state that the team in question were just one of many?
The Rebels of PT-218 (2021)
So bad it's laughable
Disclaimer: Only saw the first half we couldn't stand to watch any more.
Truly truly rubbish.
Claims to be based upon reality. Not sure "who's" reality they're talking about, but my guess is that it's some weird alternative reality.
Spoiler alert

To comment on a few issues:
- Deciding to try to fight a sub in a merchant ship (I guess it's possible, but not by choice)
- In the movie, the depth charges were fired. In reality, they were rolled off the back
- Part way through combat with a sub, the liberty ship slows to "dead slow". Is that to make themselves an easier target?
- Seriously rubbish dialogue, hardly any of which sounded even vaguely accurate
- A crewman looking out of the front of the ship, "u-boat at 2 o'clock". Really? Well that's on your right then
- In brilliant calm weather, only spotted a u-boat at 800 yards. In return, the u-boat hadn't even spotted the bloody huge great bit merchant ship
- The "88" on the sub morphes into an auto-cannon when firing
- Why are the deck guns pointing at the sky at a range of 800 yards or less?
Etc.
Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021)
A little too coarse for my liking
First off, my wife and son both enjoyed this. Their score was a 7, mine was a 3.
Sorry, just didn't rate it:
- Not really that funny. Sure, laughed a couple of times, but that's all
- Another dull, generic "nice", "feel good" style plot
- Despite my age, and a LOT of watching horror and combat focused movies when younger, I actually found the language just too "in yer face", in a cheap, shock for a laugh manner.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Overall, enjoyable
As per my title, we rather enjoyed the movie.
Just one point that drove me a little bananas.
The assault rifles that we given out as standard weapons. They were clearly a "new" design, which I assume would be to assist with dealing with the new alien menace.
If you're going to create a new rifle, just WHY would you make one that's ineffective?
Quite clearly, the M60 that was on the roof of the HMVEE worked, so it's not that it wasn't possible.
Sorry, that just makes no sense.
Kong tian lie (2017)
Dull, dull, dull
Pros:
Has some interesting shots of aircraft
Cons:
Pretty much everything else. includes
- Badly done aerial combat sequences. Top Gun was fun, included real aircraft, but the combat wasn't realistic. This has very few "real aircraft" shots in it, linked to combat sequences that looked like they were dreamt up by a 7 year old playing with a couple of Tamiya kits
- Dull plot that seemed to scrape the worst bits from Top Gun, Behind Enemy Lines 2 (yes, that laughable "being chased by missile" sequence), and Blackhawk down
- Flat characters, none of whom it was possible to give a stuff about
Absolute bargain basement DVD section for this one.
