Death in Paradise: Murdering Lyrical (2022)

Routine
20 February 2022
Like other reviewers I did feel this was very dull and routine.

On a more general point the mix of characters and balance between them feels off to me. Darlene being drafted in just feels very lazy in terms of writing and is it me, or is that character really irritating?

In the past when characters have been replaced the show always maintained a nice balance. With so many changes recently it all feels a bit out of control. I hope they can either draft Florence back in or Dwayne. Unlikely, as I think it was the actors who decided to finish.

On top of that Neville is probably coming to the end of his tenure has he's done 3 seasons (?) so there will be more upheaval if the show gets recommissioned beyond the next series.

Bloody Brilliant

This is an amazing dramatic telling of a very dark story. The acting, script and direction is by all concerned, absolutely stunning. Just occasionally something comes along that reminds you of the value of the BBC. This does just that. It is totally devastating and leaves you angry, emotional and even proud. Proud because of the families involved and what they endured and how they responded. Magnificent.

Warning: Spoilers
OK first, for all those Berman haters - I bet you wish he was around now! This is dreadful, I have really tried to like it but it is impossible. Let me say that I don't think it is the characters in the main, yes Burnham does come across as cold and perfect, but to redress that you have the wonderful (to me) Tilly and the marvellous Saru and an excellent Captain Pike. Three reasons to watch the show. Sadly the characters are the least of the shows problems.

It's the story stupid. Red Angels, mycelial network bollocks, inserting klingons into humans, reconstrucitng dead Culber from spores, himself, his memory (I haven't really got a clue). Enough stop already. I can suspend disbelief along with the best, but this is the best they can do?

SFX good enough but with the amount thrown at the show they should be.

I don't even think the so-called PC nature of the show is an issue. I want strong women characters and gay characters if they interact like real characters, these don't. It all comes back to the script, clearly written in a hurry by committee whilst either inhaling or injecting some substance or other. Admittedly it works for some artists. Just no for this bunch of under-achieving script writers.

3 stars for SFX and some of the characters. I may be being generous.

Enjoyable

Given that comparisons with Benidorm were inevitable, I think it is worth pointing out that it is considerably softer in tone than the broad brush strokes that Benidorm traded upon and I think it is all the better for that. No complaints about the cast except for perhaps Jason Manford who really looked quite poor compared to the other performers, sadly. It was a set up episode so lots of establishing done, hopefully as the series progresses it will become quicker in pace. Special shout for Stephanie Cole who as usual was brilliant.
