The Intern (2015)
Another movie where the main character and the main child are complete saints.
Well acted, decent story line. But DeNiro's character is COMPLETELY without flaws. How many people do you know like that in real life?. And Anne Hathaway's daughter is just as sweet as can be. Yuck! I'm suck of that in movies. To me, it's lazy writing.
Game Night (2018)
Lot of fun!
Game Night is a very funny comedy romp. The entire cast is excellent. Jason Bateman & Rachel McAdams have great chemistry and are hiolarious. McAdams' line delivery is perfect. The rest of the cast is great. Jesse Plemons as the kinda scary policeman neighbor, Billy Magnussen, Kylie Bunbury, Lamorne Morris, and Sharon Horgan all do great as the Game Night guests. Kyle chandler is very funny as Bateman's competive brother who plans a wild night for the group that getsb much wilder than anyone expected.
The minor characters are perfectly cast as well. Chelsea Peretti, Camille Chen, Michael C, Hall & Natasha Hall are terrific in their supporting roles.
There's some silliness and implausible situations here, but you gotta expect that from a comedy like this. Game Night is lots of fun!
Devil's Due (2014)
Part Rosemary's Baby, part Exorcist, part Blair Witch Project, part Paranormal Activity, but ALL crap.
I wish somebody who was connected with this film could explain to me who the hell is supposed to be holding the camera throughout the movie. Who???
It's like somebody watched a bunch of well-known horror films and then just mashed them all together with no rhyme or reason. Horrible events occur - with NO FOLLOW-UP WHATSOEVER. This movie was made by people who have absolutely no expectation that anybody with half a brain might see it.
I'm not going into specifics so as to not spoil it for anybody (I actually don't think that's possible, though). I highly recommend you avoid this movie. The parts that aren't absurd are totally obvious. I guess the acting is okay for what's its worth. That's why I give it a 2 rather than 1. But this is a stinky one, folks.
Hugo (2011)
I have a new favorite movie!
This is the most enchanting, beautiful movie I have EVER seen. I had this on my DVR list for months before I finally got around to watching it. Man, I'm so glad I did. This movie is just so beautiful, I actually cried through much of it (and I wasn't even high LOL). After the movie I took my dog for a walk at night and there was the Supermoon in the sky. The film involves Georges Melies' "A Trip to the Moon". Again, I started tearing up. And, I swear, I'm not a crier.
I wrote this review long after its release, so I'm choosing not to review the plot, etc. But, do yourself a favor: If you haven't seen this film, do so. Wow! A Scorsese masterpiece.
We're the Millers (2013)
7.1???
I can't believe this got above a 5. I gave it 3/10 for a few funny lines. But, overall, the humor was crude and sophomoric. The situations were ludicrous, even impossible: Nick Offerman's character was a veteran DEA officer, but he doesn't realize that the "oregano" in the baby blanket is weed? Plus he told somebody to go ahead and open the glove compartment knowing there was a gun in it? Give me a break. Plus, I found the whole movie to take drug abuse and dealing, as well as other immoral, criminal behavior with a light, comic tone - I thought that was really poor taste. Plus, the Mexican scenes seemed pretty racist to me. I'm shocked this got over a 7 average rating. Really surprised.
Bled White (2009)
Better Than Expected
I found this on the Popcorn channel on Roku and gave it a shot. You can see right away that it's an extremely low-budget zombie flick - and those are a dime a dozen and usually stink big time. But I found this one surprisingly different. You can tell that Jose Carlos Gomez, the Director, was going for much more than a cheapie, run-of-the-mill zombie movie. The low budget definitely works against the film in some ways, but, for the most part, I think it adds to the bleakness of the story. The acting was actually quite good with North Roberts and Colleen Boag standing out.
I didn't love the movie. There were a few plot holes and editing issues and other technical problems that you would expect from such a low-budget movie. But I say give it a chance - I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.
Bad Lieutenant (1992)
Absolutely absurd!
There are so many films that are insulting to New York City and, especially, the NYPD. This one is really over the top in that respect.
I am a resident of NYC. My father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather were all police officers. They put their lives on the line each day they went to work. I'm sick of films that depict the police as if they are typically immoral and corrupt. This film does so ridiculously.
Harvey Keitel's character never seems to ever check in with a superior and seems to only work an hour here and there in between drug and alcohol binges. Do any of you who felt this film was "gritty and realistic" truly believe that any NYC cop can be a severe pot, crack, meth, heroin, sex, and gambling addict; as well as a corrupt and immoral alcoholic - and still be able to continue his job? What???
Plus, have any of you ever seen a church that's (apparently) open 24 hours and so completely lacking in any sort of security, or any sort of worshipers or staff that, in it, a screaming nun can be raped by two thugs? Each time Keitel's character enters the church, it's empty - except the time that there are the cops and the priest who just happened to be discussing the rape with the victim nun (who seems crazy, as well). I mean, think about it, folks. Ridiculous!
I've seen two of Abel Ferrara's other films - "Driller Killer" and "Ms. 45". This dude realllly seems to hate NYC. Who would ever live in a place that's as horrible as these films depict? Although I sort of like "Ms. 45", as it seemed more like fantasy than reality anyway.
I give the film 2 out of ten stars. I couldn't give it a 1 because Keitel is such a great actor.
This is my very first review after enjoying this site for several years. I'm, obviously, not a professional writer or critic. But the horrible depiction of cops in this film was enough to prompt me to write about it here. I'm done now! =]
