The Other (1972)
My take on this movie.
I havent read the book. The first time i watched "The Other" i fell asleep three quarters way thru.
The second, i determined to see it through to see what the fuss was about the ending.
This film only works if.
1. Niles isnt split personality disorder. When he links with Holland using "The Game" the first time after his brothers death, Hollands soul, his spirit is still present in his body & it travels back with Niles to jointly inhabit his body. Its Possession, two souls in one body that of Niles the younger living brother.
2. Holland, the older brothers soul is stronger than Niles. Holland can assume control anytime he chooses to ( when he wants to kill, or prepare to kill ) but to disguise his presence he chooses to be a backseat passenger most of the time, though he is totally aware of what Niles soul is experiencing & converses with Niles when nobody else is around. By contrast when Holland takes control, Niles soul is unaware of what is taking place in Niles body, in effect he is asleep pushed into the recesses of his own mind.
3. The only person to realise this is the brothers grandmother who tries to stop Holland/Niles from further bloodshed, only to fail because Holland had previously cut the padlock providing an escape route from the burning barn. Thus Holland is free to continue his murderous path with Niles hostage in his own body.
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009)
Just for the Lizard scene!........
I watched this film after picking it up for the princely sum of 30p at my local charity shop, mainly because i saw nick cage & have previously watched the Keitel original. Id just like to say im very glad i did.
It loosely follows the originals character screenplay & at first i thought Cage lacked the seriousness & intensity that Keitel brought to the part. It wasnt until the "Lizard" scene that i realised that this wasnt supposed to be a serious film & in fact was more of a Coen bros type parody, from that point on i paid much closer attention & enjoyed it thoroughly. Great cast, different ending & Val Kilmer was right.......1 was an Iguana the other was a Bearded Dragon, with attitude ! Lol. Loved the Close Ups Mr Herzog!
Satan's Playground (2006)
Strictly B movie fare...
I wanted to give this movie a chance, even after the texas chainsaw massacre like start.
Four characters with baby in car driving through middle of nowhere, with nothing engaging to say.
When they break down & we get to the action it did start promisingly however after the initial victim departs it all goes swiftly downhill & i lost interest fast. The title is a misnomer, you only get to see devil worshippers in one scene & thats your lot, theyre not integral to the storyline at all. The continuity is poor & wardrobe lacking (i thought county cops in tennesee wore brown or green uniforms, surely black is a City cop outfit?) The one saving grace is a great performance by the Mrs Leeds character who holds your attention & the film together.
I could go on but why waste time? Late night film fare, to fall asleep to. Is the Jersey Devil supposed to be invisible??? I think they blew most of the budget on the door knocker !
