Aankh Micholi (2023)
Not comic enough. Boring.
I went for the high rating the film has received. Also the excellent comic cast. But was hugely disappointed.
A lot more could have been done with the comic cast and the storyline.
Everything was too predictable and the funny scenes were not too funny.
Got bored by the end. Very bored.
I would rather give it a 2 or a 3 ... 4 seems much more than this film deserves.
Also the whole premise of hiding all sorts of stuff or just making stuff up in order to get hitched is something that just doesn't go down well with me ... even if it's just a comedy film.
Don't go with high hopes to watch this one ... and am not sure why it's getting all these high ratings !
The King's Man (2021)
Disappointed
Just disappointed
A let down after the first two movies.
"Manners maketh man" ... so I'll not say any more than the minimum 150 characters necessary (!)
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Maybe ... one needs to be a bit older to fully get it (!) ... especially the new method of control envisaged in the movie
Unlike many other viewers, I did not find it to be slow or disappointing, story wise.
There are a lot of interesting developments in the current movie. In some places there are even hints of trying to blend our own reality (including the actors') with the narrative of the movie.
The new line of control envisaged in the movie may appear crass or cliched but is very real and subtle ... so much so that it has even Agent Smith hooked (!)
The only thing I found missing was gravitas in the acting. Trinity and Neo look a bit tired, unfortunately. The background score could have been a bit more inspiring. And the new Morpheus just doesn't make the cut in my view.
I wish they had put more action from Agent Smith in the movie. The actors who play that role typically tend to play it well for some reason.
Bhoot Police (2021)
Acting wasn't too great ... storyline was ok but expected
All actors except for Yami Gautam were looking tired or as if they were not paid well enough to act in the movie (and so gave only half their usual effort) !
I've seen all these stars in other movies and somehow their acting was just not convincing enough in this movie.
Storyline is predictable. The jokes are ok ok ... not too great.
Better acting and punchier dialogue could have made this movie a pretty decent watch.
Malignant (2021)
Ho Hum ...
I like such fare ... am a great fan of this genre.
This movie is well made. The acting is ok and all.
But somehow, I found it to be a bit of a drag.
I can't really put my finger on it. Maybe the base idea is good but not one of those "mind blown away" types.
With an overall 6.3 rating I was hoping for something quite different but it turned out to be not that much away from the usual.
Badhaai ho (2018)
Enjoyable
Different premise.
Enjoyable movie. Funny but not slapstick. The pace of narration is good - just right. Does become a bit emotional after the break but no over the top emotions or silly melodrama.
Good acting by all actors.
Good watch. Light-hearted and funny.
Venom (2018)
Boring, Predictable
The only interesting bit is the "parasite" (don't call him that !!) Venom and Tom Hardy's "internal" talks with each other.
The other stuff is pretty predictable and passable.
The movie tries to muscle through based on solely on special effects. Its faithful to the comic book I guess and brings out the character very well.
But ... a tad boring.
Tumbbad (2018)
Different & Intense
This was a treat to watch from the first row :)
The horror is not so gory. The story-line is very strong. A very different film from the usual stuff in this genre. Not predictable at all. Novel and interesting.
Unfortunately, I think it hasn't done too well financially as there are no big stars.
Deadpool 2 (2018)
Ho-hum
Wasn't worth all the hype.
Its a good movie but the jokes get sort of boring after a time.
Some of them seem forced.
There is no strong story-line. Both Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin nail their roles ... but there's just no meat in the story-line (which is too narrow with nothing big really happening except a kid who'll possibly become a whacko in the future being hunted down).
The two post credit scenes are giggle-worthy.
Pari (2018)
Ok-ish ... did not live up to hype
I watched, I waited for something interesting to happen, there were promising areas where the movie could have been made really scary/ intriguing, but they were not built up as well as they could have been.
At some point, they seem to have gotten confused whether they were making a horror film or a romantic movie.
They mixed it up, and the confusion shows on-screen unfortunately.
Acting by all actors is great.
But plot could have been darker, deeper, stronger.
A bit disappointed - it could have been a master-piece ...
Padmaavat (2018)
Beautiful Movie
Awesome.
A visual extravaganza. The movie moves at a steady pace and builds up tempo.
For me a few high points of the movie were ... (spoiler alert)
It all starts with the first queen being angry at her king for a small-ish mistake of gifting away a necklace made of rare pearls. All that follows is like the butterfly effect :)
The dialogue between Rani Padmavati and the Raghav Chetan when he tests her and is left dumbfounded at her answers
Malik Kafur's carrying out of his new master's first command (watch the movie to find out :) )
Khilji's give me death or I'll be your death type attitude
Padmavati's 4th demand from Khilji for her to agree to come to Delhi (again ... watch the movie to find out :) )
Malik Kafur's slinking & smiling around in the background whenever mischief is brewing
Khilji's no rules in love & war juxtaposed to Rajput unbreakable rules of fairness and valor
It was a treat to watch. Well made, nuanced, opulent, decently paced & unhurried while still catering to general tastes. Worth a watch. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
You can take it to be a standard opulent film or you can look at it as a moving, nuanced epic. The director sort of leaves it open to both interpretations.
