The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020)
Was this even necessary?
I can't imagine with TWD running out of steam and FTWD never really gaining it, that anyone was waiting for Nickelodeon Does The Zombie Apocalypse. Did Robert Kirkman lose a bet pr something?
The acting's bad, the dialogue is boring, and you wouldn't even know it was set in TWD universe if they didn't occasionally show those weird shots of zombies with cartoony outlines. Even the wigs are terrible.
The fact they call the zombies 'empties' is kind of fitting. It's how I'd describe the show as a whole.
edit: Against better judgement I watched the second episode. It really is an unhinged mess. At least there were more zombies this time.
Ghosts of Mars (2001)
This is one to watch a few times before appreciating it
Okay the first time I saw this, I was not impressed. I bought the DVD mainly because it was action/horror, and the price was right. My initial opinion on this flick after the last scene was "What the hell?". The acting was over-the-top, the story was pretty ludicrous and overall, the film looked like a poor attempt at making a good space action flick. I put the DVD back in the case and never paid much attention to it until a few months later. A couple friends came over, we had some beers, some weed and watched some flicks. One of them insisted on seeing Ghosts of Mars, "because Ice Cube rocks." I was pretty out of it, so I didn't put up much resistance. And when watching it for the second time, it hit me: This movie is not meant to be taken too seriously. This is not some lame-ass attempt at making an 'original' but serious flick like Mission to Mars (now that was pure horror), it has only one purpose: to entertain you for about 90 minutes. And it does that wonderfully. The story is completely far-fetched, the bad guys are completely whacked out, the good guys are a nice mix of do-gooders and criminals, and the acting is perfect for the mood of the film: a bit silly, but ballsy.
Although one bit annoys me, namely the way the movie is told (you already know Ballard lives, which spoils a bit of the fun), the movie has grown on me, and is now one of my favorites to watch on a boring, dreary evening. Skin up, spark up and enjoy the silliness! This movie is ideal for stoners by the way: it has tough rappers, over-the-top action scenes, a nice amount of gore, one-liners a go-go and a story that is easy to follow yet exciting enough to make you see how it ends.
8 out of 10.
