The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981)
This movie is awesome!
Ok, maybe not awesome. But it didn't deserve the negative treatment. I just watched it as an adult and had not seen it since I was a kid 40 years ago, when it first came out and it came on cable.
I was wondering while recently watching it what happened to this movie, why did I never hear about it again until I stumbled across it on a streaming service.
Apparently it bombed and the critics didn't like it. I just watched Siskel & Ebert rip on it. They make some valid criticisms. The pacing of the movie is slow, I started to grow impatient wondering when does the Lone Ranger appear. But the first half is good. The plot in the 2nd half is weak. And the narrator is hokey and unnecessary.
But it's beautifully shot, the locations, the lighting, costumes and cast were all perfect. I actually liked Clayton Spilsbury in this. I kept thinking, man that guy is good looking, lol. Shame he never acted again.
I can see this one becoming a cult classic.
The Good Place (2016)
The twist at the end of Season 1 is from an old Twilight Zone episode.
I grew up in the 80s, at least two decades after the original black and white Twilight Zone aired in 1960. But I remember watching it on re-runs late at night.
When I was watching the last episode of The Good Place, and got to the twist in the end, it took me back to watching old Twilight Zone I saw way back when. It was one I never forgot as it was such a good twist in the end.
And a quick google search proved my recollection correct, the 1960 Twilight Episode is titled "A Nice Place to Visit".
Not I am not pointing that out as a criticism. It's only as a lifelong fan of television, film and sci-fi, that I feel compelled to point it out. It certainly strokes my ego like shouting out the answers on Jeopardy. I will say that the show seems to be written well and I am looking forward to seeing where The Good Place will go in further seasons.
Also, I have to wonder if the demographics of the characters, which seemed to pander a bit to pc culture in Season 1, if they will develop further. Will that be another twist?
Road House (1989)
This movie is awesome.
I don't know what it is about this film. And yes I said film..
Maybe it is Patrick Swayze and his glorious mullet, But I enjoy this movie. It's like a Kurosawa film, set around a honky tonk in a small town in America. The rough, blue collar bar setting is wonderfully ironic given the complex themes explored in the story. The fights are like ancient duels between men.
Drawing you in is the contemplation of greed vs honor and righteousness vs killing, Compelling you to continue watching despite your initial impression that this was just another B rate 80s movie. And then there's Patrick Swayze and his glorious mullet.
This film just works.
Young Sheldon (2017)
Once again, Hollywood seems to think all of Texas is west Texas.
The opening picture shows young Sheldon standing in a dusty prairie in front of mountains, which is only found in far west Texas which is about a 10 hour drive from the gulf coast island of Galveston, where Sheldon is supposed to be from.
Why not go ahead and add some saguaro cactus, which are found mainly in AZ two states away, while they're at it? Wouldn't be the first time.
It seems like the writers and producers have no clue about the geography of Texas, instead rely on old clichés of the ol west. And many of the background characters verge on stereotypes. The simple-minded ignorance is glaring.
Yet the premise of the show seems to be that Texas is where all the simple minded, ignorant people are in the world, which is supposed to provide the juxtaposition for brilliant young Sheldon.
lol.....the hypocrisy is hilarious.
Having said that, I always enjoyed Sheldon as a character, not only in BBT, but especially now as a young child in a non sitcom format.
And I look forward to seeing where this goes.
2 Broke Girls: And the Stalking Dead (2017)
How did this show make it to syndication.
I just watched this. As someone from Texas, the over use of old cliché Texas stereotypes was just stupid. This is 2017. It's embarrassing to see on prime time national television. I suppose the writers think they are just so awesome not living in flyover country and such, but the writing is terrible.
The jokes are so predictable, so lame, they're just not funny.
And why do the two main characters talk in high pitched little girl voices? They're supposed to be grown women. It's like this show is supposed to be progressive but it comes off as backwards.
And i love the 18 year age difference between Kat Denning and the actor who plays her romantic interest. Taking it back old school with that.
It's an act of cosmic injustice that this show made it to syndication and making the creators rich, while I genius of the universe sit on my couch mocking it.
