Under the Silver Lake (2018)
Fantastic
The more times I watch this movie the more I love it. It's a throwback to old noir films, a commentary inodern Hollywood and a story about adult life. I love the deeper themes and the fun secret hunting in this movie.. My tip to enjoy this movie would be to not worry about all that, just have fun along the way and give it extra watches.
Attaway General (2020)
Trash in its purest form
Genuinely inspiring. I can't imagine a thing that would make this show better. Every aspect of this show is done, not just poorly, but horribly. The worst acting I've seen with an actual budget. Speaking of which, they have about one hallway set to film in and they routinely use the same four or five stock videos of hospitals. The writing tries very hard to be greys anatomy in 10 minute bits and it ends up piling in loads of exposition and terrible jokes in every scene. I find every second of this show hilarious and would absolutely recommend.
The Crescent (2017)
One of the worst pieces of garbage I've seen all year
This movie is a shining example of someone who had a very specific vision for their film, so they just did whatever they wanted and it didn't end up coming together in any meaningful way. In an attempt to be deep and symbolic the movie is instead pretentious and a waste of time. The story is nonsensical and confusing until a character just explains it at the end. It's manages to be obtuse and hard to follow without actually being intriguing or leaving much up to interpretation.
It's shot like absolute garbage, mostly using a lot of ugly close ups and handheld shots that have no sense of framing for the scene. Occasionally the movie has weird interludes where the aspect ratio changes to basically portrait view for seemingly no reason. There are some interesting visuals involving paintings made by the main character, but they don't end up having any real significance other than looking cool.
Every performance is laughably bad; the lead especially seems incredibly bored every time that the scene is supposed to be suspenseful or scary.
Probably most damning, it just isn't scary in any way. Nothing that happens to the main character and her son is really that threatening or disturbing in any way. There are a litany of cliches and played out set ups that never go anywhere. For a movie that's paced like a slug on wet concrete it doesn't create any sense of suspense whatsoever.
In total, it's stupid, it's boring, it's ugly, it's poorly acted, and it has nothing to offer on a story level. Skip it.
Good Time (2017)
Frantic, Engaging, and Entertaining
The greatest strength of this movie is it's energy. The constant claustrophobic cinematography help maintain an atmosphere of panic and stress, especially combined with the frenetic movement of the camera. This mirrors how from the very beginning the two main characters are constantly in trouble and on the run, trying to quickly figure out what the best next move is. It's very engaging and does a great job of drawing you in.
Robert Pattinson gives one of the best performances I've seen all year. He does an excellent job of completely buying into this character and consequently he's essentially unrecognizable. Performances on the whole are very solid, with Benny Safdie and Taliah Webster as other particular standouts.
The music is also very well done. It's very unique and its constantly loud and pounding vibes help echo that same sense of worry and stress that the characters face.
The movie certainly isn't without fault. There are several scenes where the characters are able to escape certain situations a bit too easily or certain events in the plot don't quite make sense. Overall, these aren't too overbearing and in general the film keeps a good enough pace and gets you invested in the characters enough to the point where it isn't too bothersome.
Altogether, this movie is very entertaining and definitely worth a watch.
