The Sudbury Devil (2023)
A decent independent horror film
Don't let the fact that the movie was made by a Youtuber on a shoestring budget fool you. Most of the special effects are practical and they look good, acting and soundtrack are amazing.
Visually the movie mostly resembles Ravenous (there is even a small Easter egg reference to Ravenous in one scene, so you can tell it was a huge influence), while thematically the first thoughts come to The Witch with a sprinkle of Lords Of Salem on top.
There are a few digital effects that mostly gave me Mandy vibes, and only one looked out of place for me. Other than that, everything else is practical and shot in camera.
If you are a horror fan and if you like the movies I mentioned, you will probably like this one as well. It gets a bit trippy at times, but this fits the story just fine and doesn't feel pretentious or forced.
The movie does have some gore, but again, don't think of something extreme, but if the gore in Ravenous is something you're ok with, this will be just perfect (no cannibalism though, don't go into it expecting that).
You can expect historical depth at the same level of The Witch, from costumes to the accents, which are really well played and preformed. Same can be said for the movie soundtrack, it fits the tone perfectly.
The movie basically has only one location, the whole story is set in the forest, however, this is no Blair Witch, it is way better than that.
The Planets (2017)
In case you didn't hear the words first 20 times, no worries they will be repeated over and over again
This review is mostly for The Venus episode, hope it doesn't follow the pattern. Yeah, spoiler alerts.
So 20 minutes in and I've heard:
"The Earth and Venus used to be the same, but in the future, this will be the Earth's destiny"... like 20 or so times. In case you haven't heard the narrator say it with a dramatic tone, don't worry, the scientists will repeat it a few times and the host of the show as well.
I understand there are commercial breaks and that most documentaries want you to recap on what you saw so far or to grab your attention in case you just tuned in, bit this is taking it too far. It's like watching 30 seconds trailer for the episode that is running in a loop for 40 minutes. The whole content of the episode could be summed up to 7 sentences.
