Transporter 3 (2008)
Old, repetitive, predictable.
Nothing new here. If banking on the "success" of it's previous title releases means a sequel should ignore any improvements, then Transporter 3 should garner huge box office numbers and record crowds. Not even close. This third installment fails miserably almost from start to finish. It was predictable in it's plot, it's action sequences, it's dialogue, even it's soundtrack. While I do enjoy the majority of Jason Statham's previous work (ie. Snatch, Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels, Revolver, etc.) this Transporter showed nothing new and exciting. With the exception of the final sequence, every fight seen had him showing off his physique, taking on at minimum seven guys at once. Even the final sequence was predictable, where the hero has the most trouble fighting the main bad guy, that is physically smaller, undisciplined, and has no knowledge of the martial arts that allowed the hero to dispatch of entire gangs single-handed. It was too unbelievable to be entertaining. Any man that can ride a BMX bike through crowded sidewalks and textile factories maintaining a distance of less than 50 feet to a speeding, highly tuned Audi should be wearing a cape and tights. Of course, then he'd be flying in pursuit...not riding a bicycle. The plot was uninspired, the dialogue was dry and boring, filled with awful one-liners that would make Sly and Arnie cringe. I ranked the film as high as four for the simple reason that the driving sequences were actually pretty good. I would recommend waiting for the DVD release, and renting it along with the other two Transporters. Other than that, this is one film to avoid the line-up at the popcorn counter for.
Awakening (2006)
An embarrassment to Canadian film professionals
Every once and awhile, you'll watch a film that will inspire you, entertain you, move you to tears, have you laughing out loud, and even raise from your seat and make you cheer. This is NOT one of those films. Aside from wishing/hoping that no one outside the people that were involved in the making of this film actually watched it, I'm ashamed this film so brazenly states it's Canadian roots.
Everything about this film was substandard; the poor writing, cinematography, editing, make-up, and especially the acting. I appreciate the fact that you can't overkill another release in the zombie genre....no I take that back. This film did. A very bad release from another Romero wanna-be. Perhaps this would have been successful as a senior year student theatre play, but not as a film...even with a questionable budget. A waste of money, and 80 minutes of my life I'll never get back.
