Kindred (2022)
Read the book
Edit: Struggled to get through the first episode was the first but not last warning sign of things to come or rather not to come. What happens when Hollywood ruins a beloved authors work of art. Watching is pure agony it strays so far from Octavia Butler's excellent written work to dumb down drivel. The extensive changes from the book which is set in 1979 to 2016 is terrible and throws everything off. Dana from the book is truley no where to be found in this adaptation. And Kevin her husband? Guess what? He's not her husband and is written as a bumbling caricature and not the older white mature husband in the book. The first rule of any adaptation of Octavia Butler's books should be to respect the essence of the source material. Clearly they have chosen to do otherwise as a result turned Kindred's brilliant source material inside out. Its unbearable and badly written. And they have the audacity to want this monstrocity as a series. No, just no. If this particular dumb down adaptation is the the result of what it takes to get something made in Hollywood so it's palpable to a specific segment of society leave it alone. Highly disappointed is an understatement. Do yourself a favor and read the book.
Homecoming: People (2020)
F 'd up a good show
Terrible, dumb down, mediocre script doesn't even begin to describe this monstrosity. Should have stuck to one season. F 'd up a good show.
Without Remorse (2021)
With Regret
Where to begin Without Remorse? Whose idea was it to cast these people? If you can't do right by an author's work leave it alone. Atrocious acting! And I mean atrocious from beginning to God awful end. I regret watching this monstrosity.
One Night in Miami... (2020)
The arguments of 4 Black men
When you like a movie, but are acutely aware it's the usual same old product same old comercial formula. The Nation is the bad guy. Betty is once again reduced to just the stay at home wife, mother and the angry Black woman. Have yet to ever see a full well rounded, strong professional skilled Betty, which she was before and after Malcolm. Malcolm yet again is portrayed as an angry Black man plagued with on-going Nation problems. The portrayal of one night in Miami is essentially the arguments of 4 Black men that offer nothing new outside of the same old comercial formula.
Sylvie's Love (2020)
Anticipation of Joy?
Sylvie's Love cinematography is mesmerizing, I could see it as a fantastic coffee table book, as a movie not so much. Sylvie is a Black woman with big dreams of working in the television industry. Great! I can get into that. Robert is a musician with big dreams of working in the music industry. Great! I can also get into that. What Sylvie's Love gives the audience as a love story just doesn't work well. Where was the conflict that kept these two apart? Nothing even remotely remarkable. Sylvie's fiancé Lacy is away serving the country. She spends a lot of time with Robert, becomes pregnant by Robert, but still marries Lacy anyway, who knows he's not the father. Her husband leaves her. She reconnects with Robert despite her explanation of why she didn't tell him about their child. The sparse storyline just glosses over any adverse effects to the child. The number of break-ups between the two is beyond nauseatingly shallow lack of communication. A real let down when you anticipate the joy of getting lost in a good movie that is underdeveloped and poorly executed.
I'm Your Woman (2020)
Slow Move To No Where
The pacing of" I'm Your Woman" is painfully slow. The first hour drags on into pure boredom inducing the desire to turn it off or fast forwarded it. Funny its suppose to be from the lead female character Jean's point of view but it is actually the characters Teri the wife of Cal and mother of Paul that is much more intriguing and dynamic. Makes one wonder the type of mentality that by pass the strong dynamics of characters Teri and Cal to make Jean the focus or rather a slow move to nowhere.
Lovecraft Country: Full Circle (2020)
Predictable, Boring, Mediocrity
Full Circle is poorly written and executed. How do you take stellar actors and reduce them to this dribble. Was it editing gone awry or pray tell did they run out of ideas?
Lovecraft has been a hit or miss damn near every other episode. The big miss this entire season is colorism. How the hell do Black creators not address this. Ruby dark skinned, full figure woman is never protected. Ruby is the one character not surrounded and protected by family besides Diana in episode 8, not once during the entire season.
Hey, if its all about bloodline, magic, and legacy run with it. Instead of killing off or coma inducing Ruby why not have Ruby impregnated by Christina while cloaked in Williams' body. Christina is able to use magic through binding the use of blood, hair, and intentions and impregnating Ruby is far more interesting than all the clichés used and no doubt paid to companies to include in damn near every production.
But nonetheless what could have been a full circle moment was reduced to predictable, boring, mediocrity.
Lovecraft Country: Strange Case (2020)
Nothing New Here
The saying nothing new under the sun is so true. Episode 5 Strange Case plays into all the typical stereotypes, particularly the stereotypes hollywood studios are pushing today. You can literally count them from episodes 1 through 5. Welp it was all on display, no surprises, same old same old. Though it may have intended to be provocative, it wasn't. Nothing new here.
Cherish the Day: Synopsis (2020)
Poorly Executed
Of all the episodes this is the worst. It seems as if it was thrown together in addition to more flash backs used as fillers. The writing is not up to par. Up until now I've watched every episode multiple times, I could barely get through this one. Cherish the day has had some stellar moments but this episode was poorly executed.
Loving (2016)
Pure Agony
Getting through this film feels like a life time perhaps that was the purpose of this film. Pure Agony
Little (2019)
Painfully Dull
Quite a few reviews mention how did this get released. Humorless and poorly executed. Timing is a problem the film is too long. It might have been better filmed as a short. Big, Seventeen Again, Freaky Friday and 17 again, were all great movies. Little is painfully dull.
Aquaman (2018)
Couldn't hold water
Don't believe the hype. Aquaman is more like bucket man, an empty bucket of drivel. Bad hokey performance by almost all of the actors. Aquaman couldn't hold water...
Us (2019)
Watching paint dry would have been so much better
Terrible. An incredible waste of time. Poor execution, under develop concept... among the many reasons people stop going to movies. No one wants to waste money on a crappy movie like this. Movies are suppose to be an experience this was just straight up crap, watching paint dry would have been so much better and to think no one said hey let's think this through, flesh this out, strategize and execute this better.
If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)
Remains true till this day
Cinematic gold. If Beale Street Could Talk is beautifully shot, simply beautiful. Barry Jenkins uses dialogue & imagery that breathes life into every scene. Tish, Fonny, Sharon, Ernestine, Joe, Daniel could be any number of people we know. As James Baldwin said so many years ago "To be in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time," and this remains true till this day.
Carnival Row (2019)
Carnival Row Binge
An enjoyable artistic series beautifully filmed. The set and costume designs are out of this world and the superior acting is on point too. The mixing of various artistic elements makes a binge watch of Carnival Row on this labor day holiday worth while.
The Bobby DeBarge Story (2019)
You Must See It For Yourself
A good movie on Bobby Debarge. Roshon Fegan did a great job portraying Bobby Debarge. No, it's not Bobby's entire life but snippets of his life. There's no way every facet of Bobby Debarge entire life could be captured in less than 2 hours nor over the course of three days for that matter. We will never know everything because Bobby is not here to tell it himself only those that are left behind have their version of who he was and even then it's their interpretation. We do know he was born the second oldest child in a large family with a white father and a Black mother. Bobby, his siblings, and mother were all severely abused by the father. The mother was a battered woman, extremely religious, and spent a great deal of time in church. All the siblings have musical talent, but being severely abused Bobby and his siblings developed drug addictions. The movie shows some of Bobby's behaviors and his use of cocaine and crack but by no means all of the drugs he used during the course of his lifetime. The clothing and wigs are all representation of the late 70's and the 80's. If you compare clothing and wig standards from then to now then you fail to recognize all the various styles from those eras. Just take a look at all the various album covers, shows, hell even old family albums they exist. I could care less about the wigs and the clothes it's a good story. Bobby lived a fast and hard lifestyle again only snippets are in the movie. We will never know every person he had sex with, used drugs with but considering the years of childhood trauma his behaviors are not surprising. Bobby was a singer, writer, musician, son, brother, husband, father but most important of all he was a person that left a legacy of music that will live on forever. Don't let the criticism of the movie "The Bobby Debarge Story" stop you from seeing it. You Must See It For Yourself.
Black Lightning: The Book of the Apocalypse: Chapter Two: The Omega (2019)
Trumps Them All
The music incorporated throughout Black lightning is always phenomenal and right on point with this episode. Gambi, Black Lightning and Anissa flying around her on motorcycle coming to the rescue of the baby of the family is becoming common. Yes Jennifer has increasing powers, a new suit, and yet she is still exudes teenage behavior which is understandable. What is not understandable are the behaviors of Black Lightning, Lynn and Henderson. Lynn finally explodes, beats down Dr. Jace and it's the most shallow, inauthentic beat down ever. Come on, how are you going to have Lynn punching the hell out of Dr. Jace, talking and straddling her on the floor at the same time. Weak, incredibly weak fight and if you pay close attention Lynn never picked up the gun. Why leave the gun laying there when you know you're dealing with Dr. Jace the psychopath. Lynn was more authentic blowing a body away with a shot gun a few episodes ago than she is in this farce of a fight scene. Black Lightning looks awkward and out of place hovering in the background while the fight is happening. How many massacres does it take for Black Lightning and Henderson to realize the police don't have adequate power to protect anyone against Tobias nor meta humans. The police station is not secure. Why not utilize Gambi's technological skills to design a secure place. Tobias plunges Freeland into darkness, Reverend Holt returns to the pulpit and the fight between the metas, Black Lightning, and Anissa ensues. A lack luster battle, perhaps a snippet of what is to come. Tobias' normal sadistic mentality is giving way to a bizarre psychosis even for him. Cutter can no longer deal with his increasing levels of psychosis that results in her being choked and elects to cease her working alliance with him. Tobias releases the pod kids, before Lynn can initiate the serum, who wander about dazed and confused. Lala on his second reincarnation does Lala as well as expected, but killing Tobias is still beyond his abilities. His flesh becomes inflamed with the tattoos of all the people he killed. Jen has the right amount of strength, power to take down Tobias despite Jefferson's melodramatic interference. But in the end this is Jefferson's fight to win or lose, to avenge the death of his father. The Peirce family are bordering a tad bit too much on the melodramatics these last two episodes. Jefferson's break down during the family dinner doesn't come across as authentic and this is disconcerting, because they all have exhibited so many authentic raw emotions over the past two seasons. Agent Odell's ominous presence is the one to watch, his actions and secrets out trumps them all.
Superfly (2018)
A Miserable Failure
Can't get passed two minutes of this disaster. Two whole minutes. This movie is one of my biggest gripes with remakes. If you can't do it better leave it alone. Seriously if I could give Superfly 2018 a negative zero I would. It's more than painfully bad. I've had to force myself through a lot of movies and I can tell you this you will lose brain cells trying to watch this. I don't know what they were thinking but I do know they Failed miserably. A Miserable Failure.
Black Lightning: The Book of Secrets: Chapter Three: Pillar of Fire (2019)
Scattered Behaviors
Jennifer is residing at Anissa's apartment, relying on big sister's support and still mourning the death of Khalil with thoughts of revenge on her mind. Anissa warns her Tobias is dangerous and whatever she has in mind she can't do it alone. Anissa seeks Gambi's help with Grace's disappearance. After background checks guess what Grace is not who she presented herself to be. Lynn tends to the pod, Tobias plots to both steal & utilize the pods for his own nefarious purposes, and Jefferson revisits the idea of becoming the school principal again. The Pierce family are distracted, losing ground and not up to par to deal with the coming dangerous onslaught of Tobias. Clearly this episode is leading up to the all out meta war but the scattered behaviors of the Pierce family is annoying. How many times is it going to be said "Tobias is dangerous." Well act like it. Gambi's makes all kinds of technical gadgets so for the love of Freeland why can't he craft some kind of weapon for Lynn to keep on her persons. And why not utilize Perenna, a meta therapist, skills to assist Lynn, who has no powers, in the lab with the the awakening of the pods. At this point they need all the help they can get.
Restoration (2016)
Bad, Boring, Unbelievable
Restoration is badly directed. The husband and wife are not believable, which is a huge indication that screams stop don't waste 92 minutes of your time find another movie cause this ain't it. Ridiculous premise of
finding a diary of a dead child inside a teddy bear. Who in their right mind uses a huge butcher knife to cut open a teddy bear? A so called doctor. Really? Nothing about this woman being a doctor is authentic not even in hospital scrubs. Inauthenticity radiates through out this movie from let's throw in a pregnancy along with stoic responses to inappropriate neighbors, ridiculous fight and murder scenes, as well as the twisted sex scenes. Just Bad, Boring, Unbelievable.
Bird Box (2018)
All sense of horror, mystery, intrigue flew the coop.
All the great actors can't save this badly made monstrocity. Unbearably boring and overated. A rating of 3/10 is pushing it. Honestly a - 1 rating is what Bird Box deserves. Literally forced myself to watch, it was pure agony. 124 minutes of crap with a budget of 19+ million. Wow a 15 minute bare bone movie stretched to 2 hours of absolutely nothingness. Curious to know what was left on the editing room floor perhaps this is the reason why the so called Bird Box just does not cut it. All sense of horror, mystery, intrigue flew the coop.
Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)
The Eyes Have It
Year 1978 I saw The Eyes of Laura Mars in the movie theatre. I watched it again in 2018 and I must say the eyes still have after all these years. Outstanding acting by Faye Dunaway as Laura Mars the fashion photographer, Tommy Lee Jones as John Nevill the investigator, and a host of other fine actors. Do you believe in the gift of sight? Love a who done it, killer soundtrack, and 70's fashion? Then The Eyes of Laura Mars is waiting for you.
Where Children Play (2015)
A Relief When It Ends
Where children play depicts admirable acting but the pace of the movie is too slow, too many genres. A relief when it ends.
Ray Donovan: Twerk (2013)
Too Many Stereotypes
This episode pigeon holds Black people as minstrel shows. Might as well paint their lips red & throw in watermelon & fried chicken it's so obvious. Considering South Boston background & history is so prevalent within this dysfunctional family it's not surprising.
Jimi: All Is by My Side (2013)
Terrible
Terrible movie. It was a headache to watch. Badly directed. Should be a crime to take someone's life and turn it into badly directed garbage thrown onto the silver screen.
