Write Before Christmas (2019)
Breath of fresh air
As far as Hallmark movies go this story line was very refreshing and easy to watch. The cookie cutter plots are typically painful to get through. Yeah there are never any surprise endings. It's always happily ever after. But how the movie gets there usually boils down to a small handful of scenarios. Big city boy or girl goes to small town for work or other reasons and ends up finding him or her self and meeting mr or mrs right on process and probably losing uptight workaholic gf or bf in the process. Some misunderstandings often inserted to make the journey from A to Z more entertaining. But generally from A or B you have the entire movie figured out.
Enter the 2 older characters and luke and jessica I wasnt sure what to expect. The actors were both on 1 Tree hill and Chad especially was flat and aloof and a wannabe James Dean in my opinion. The older dude was on Melrose place. I need not say more. Lolita and he had a super chemistry. I really enjoyed their part in the story
On that note the other thing made this more complex and interesting to watch was having a few main story lines. Not just boy and girl and their predictable love story and a few minor characters on the way who end up being just wallpaper.
I will not spoil anything about the story. The whole girl gets dumped in public had me worried but the events following were not remotely predictable in a Hallmark setting. Bravo. Of 100s of rom coms watched in my entire life this is in the top 5. Which is saying the other 95 are in the bottom 95 lol
Please watch this to restore your faith in a good romance movie.
Flashpoint: Broken Peace (2012)
Odd outcome
I agree. Not every police situation ends up peachy. You know the princess doesn't always get the prince. the good guy doesn't always win. Really weird sequence of events. that they would shoot to kill the daughter. And also even bring the kid in the 1st place. they would never allow a civilian in2 that situation. Anyway clearly the writers wanted this 2 end up as an investigation and a huge discussion amongst the team about choices they make serving the law. So yeah good setup for that. I really don't believe in real scheme of things they would have shot to kill the kid. Again, I'm not into fake sugar coated endings. I prefer a reflection of real life. but that was just an odd story ending simply for sake of a dialogue about choices and judgment calls these people make every day on the job.
No Reservations (2007)
Have to take at face value
Cheap rom com formula plot, workaholic aunt inherits niece after sibling dies- this basic formula has been done to death. As a chef I thought it would at least make it more palatable to watch from a industry interest standpoint. So my advice is if you are a fellow chef you should run for the hills. there is no fancy resto on god's green earth that is run this way- I could list for days all the reasons why. If you're not a chef, but watch the endless number of food network shows and movies such as this, then please do not ever become one based on these kinds of shows ok? please? this is not reality, If I didn't like breslin I would have passed entirely. I give 1 star because there is nothing strong about characters or sub plots or interactions, and the plot if you are marking on predicability warrants a 10 out of 10. However whoever wrote the script should be either charged with plagiarism or put out to pasture.
Driven Underground (2015)
No words to describe how awful
I've seen a few b list movies. You know you take cheap cop movies at face value because they weren't written wit amazing twists and acting. You don't expect award winning plots and complex characters. but this was not just predictable. this was atrocious. I like the actor who plays tom from other movies. I even have seen Lochlyn Monro do some better acting. Swanson's character was appalling. the number of holes in the plot, the major flaws in the police department, too numerous to mention. there is no need for spoiler alert. this movie was spoiled the second it was produced.
Royal New Year's Eve (2017)
good hallmark story destroyed by accents
I really do take rom coms like Hallmark at face value. Some plots are more creative than others. While many are cookie cutter predictable, the actors have great chemistry and are believable in what they're doing.
I think the mistaken identity thing is a great storyline over all in any genre. Sadly, I am having to stop watching this movie part way through because the English accents from these royals- or accents from whatever small fake country he's supposed to be from, are so incredibly deplorable my ears want to bleed. I like Jesse Schraam, I've seen him in other stuff. He most definitely should not have been cast with this accent. And like I said I take these movies at face value, but I've also seen brad pitt destroy a perfectly good movie because of a horrific accent. too bad really, honestly had potential for a funny rom com story. I have to draw line somewhere. the other minor fake thing is a film set in New York and why they filmed in Vancouver I do not know. How many Hallmarks have I seen set AND filmed in NYC? Sorry Im from Vancouver and I love seeing local landmarks, but you cant run a camera around downtown Vancouver showing Howe and Dunsmuir and other places, then have everyone talking about how they are in NYC. filming loc. says only Van so I can assume rest of movie will also not show any NYC landmarks to make it believable.
Coffee Shop (2014)
Average rom com with basic boy meets girl plot, no sub plots or detours to rank this up there with more inspiring love stories I've seen
nothing extraordinary about the plot- it's a rom com. some nice moments from other actors but the main one she tries way too hard/ OK and the one issue I have is i've seen a handful of movies centered around characters who can sing. Some stories better than others but at least the actors did their own singing which makes the role real. Lip syncing is so cheesy and throws the whole scene if not movie off kilter. OK there was no lead-in explanation to this supposed perfect woman having a musical background. one 10 second bit of her playing piano in the beginning and then all of a sudden at some do-gooder fundraiser she is putting on a concert- and lip syncing, a beautiful song but not her piano and not her singing. And then boring holes in the guy's face. Because lets face it if it were really her with a passion for music and singing that song she would have been feeling it and not glaring stonily at this Ben person. Would have been more real to get someone who can actually sing. Anyway, always love Jon Lovitz for some alternate energy in the movie to make it otherwise just a story about a sad and lonely girl with friends whose only mission for 90 minutes is to hook her up. I admit I've seen my share of rom coms, just that some writers try harder to add more depth to the story and not just make it about boy meets girl, girl bats eyelashes at boy, and the only 'conflict' is whether she runs back to boy A or falls for boy B. not riveting as far as plots go. Sub plots are allowed in rom coms too ;)
