Quintet (1979)
I managed threw this but my friends make fun of me for watching junk like this
IPersonally, I wasn't either disappointed or pleased with this movie. I can think of all the things I didn't like about it, like the music. The music was symbolic, but it was bad. Paul Newmans acted blandish, but I figure that was Altman's intent. This movie could have been far more stimulating; but would that detract from the message which only Altman knows? I find myself despising the boorish nature of the movie but i find some parts of the movie interesting. In truth had I had something else to do when I plunked my cheeks down to view I probably would have not finished the movie. I think by Altman knew what he was doing when he made Quintet. The movie reminds me of The Day After, which I gotta say is more entertaining but not as...I want to say intellectual. I got that the definition of humanity changes to suit our surroundings. For some reason the movie makes mindless murder seem okay. One part in particular ticked me off, when Essex/Newman cuts whats her names throat, instead of just maiming her, and then he wants to know what his prize is...you got a bunch of serial-killers and you got Essex who apparently was corrupted but can absolve his involvement by simply leaving. He didn't defy the system hes just not as mindless as the rest of the city-dwellers. This movie starts off cold, has a lukewarm aftertaste, and comes out like a turd with corn clumped in it when you know that you haven't eaten corn in like a month. can think of all the things I didn't like about it, like the music. Jarhead (2005)
definitely not what i was expecting
i was hoping for a more gung ho war movie, but i wasn't disappointed either. one of my friends said it was nothing like the book so keep your socks on book readers. there were some dissatisfying moments in the movie, no actual fire fights but they get darn close. Id say this movie is lot more about what it is to be a soldier. On the side though its about the relationship with his girlfriend but in the end its really about his compadres. Jarhead provoked some raw emotions and will have anyone that is familiar in the military life going "damn its straight up my alley." Though i must say that the scenes were pretty cool, its not a movie i would buy when it came out on DVD. It had some good home grown not for kids humor which i like, but definitely not what you want innocent kiddies to watch. My finally comment on this movie is that you cant compare it to any other war movie b/c its not a war movie...its more of a drama.
