The Witcher (2019)
Objectively speaking.
The witcher on netflix is a innegal production.
It has superbs combat scenes, creatures and athmospheres are beautifully rended (the castle in episode 3, yenefer's portal transportation etc), but on some less important scenes, the ligntning is a bit cheap (with the king of elfs etc)
sometimes timelines can be confusins : Yen's story happens 30ish years before the moment when Geralt'seets with Foltest for exemple, but Geralt's happens 12ish years before Ciri's. And this is not very clearly shown by the naratives before episode 3.
Cast is innequal as well : americanization of everything decides of the fate of oldest European and Slavic tales by just deciding to replace supposed slavic looking characters by POC just everywhere. Firgilla, and Triss notably, who don't really ressemble their respective description. I have hopes for them to show more actress ability especially Fringilla. Triss' personality is however very similar to what i portrayed reading the books.
Henri's Geralt is indeed really good, his sword abilities are off the charts I would just love him to show more nuances in his personality. The bard s very funny and brings a touch of comedy to their interactions. I hope to see more chemistry and friendship growing still.
Finally for Yen, I eally really hated that cast at first, I mean this actress is so young she's Barelly legal, but then her acting in the 3 first episodes was really amazing I thought. I could really get her emotions and rage.
my point is just that I'm partially displeased by the fact that the series crushed so many books in the first few episodes, a bit like Game of thrones did at the beggining
of season 1, sure it place a context, but it doesn't allow the viewer to appreicate all the meaning of the conflict between cintra and novigrad for example.
In short :
Pros :
- Geralt & Yen & Jaskier
- combats !
- Decors when the scene is an important one
- Make up of Geralt when intoxicated by potions
- good entertainment
Cons :
- forced "woke" cast
- timelines are not very clear
- yen is young af
- could let more time for characters and stories to unravel
- the hedgehog, I mean...
Room to improve :
- want to see more acting from Triss and Fringilla
- let actors play more emotionaly some scenes, of delop more some interactions
Voldemort: Origins of the Heir (2018)
not too bad
This short film can't be as good as a multimilion production, of course.
but the special effects were ok. some questioning 1st person video-game type gamera work. Dialogues are overal poor and dubing's making everything terrible. some moments are terribly badly played, but the montage and interogation-room format is a clever idea to tell the story, with interesting final scenes that allow the viewer to rethink the previous scenes.
The actor that played Tom was actually quite remarquable.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
feeling disrecpected
D&d kept on repeating how much money they spent on this season. A dollar per plot holes, + a dollar per unresolved storylines + a dollar for every shallow lines characters have to say = millions indeed.
