The Widowmaker (2015)
Very Good Information
Very eye opening and not to be missed! Gives you a good idea of what tests to ask for and who to see. The one thing I found weird was they showed all these really rich cardiologists who had extremely bad teeth. I have read where your teeth can have a big impact on heart health. I have had the scan already and will again. I recommend it everyone. Do not stick your head in the sand and become frightened at getting info that could save your life. I hope this message reaches a lot of people who need it. You can really see where decisions about our lives are made by doctors who are really asses and act like it's amusing! They say a stent is no more better than diet and exercise....when someone is laying on the table and gets a stent that opens his artery immediately. Like every thing else in life, money seems to be the big motivation in treatments getting the go ahead or not. Money and hubris . One or two people can influence a whole country as far as what tests will be paid for by insurance.
Ex Machina (2014)
Boring
What a disappointment this movie was.. Poor acting, poor dialog and I fell asleep halfway through it. Emily Blunt would have played the robot much better. Maybe people who never were into sci fiction might be impressed..but come on it's a basic premise that takes 1 1/2 hours to set up an expected ending. Oscar Isaacs was good. The house and mountains were gorgeous, but that's about it. They say the robot was "breathtaking"....but actually she looks like she quit growing when she was 12. Her breasts are tiny and funny looking and her face is just average. I wouldn't waste my money on seeing it at a theater. It cost 9.00 to get in and 15. for the popcorn(etc...) SO total of 25.00 wasted!
Country Strong (2010)
Charming
I never much cared for Gwyneth until this movie I thought she was too cold and I couldn't identify with her. In this movie she shows a sense of humor, a crooked smile and genuine emotions on her face- really lovely. I loved all the music and performances I have watched it about 6 times so far. Also I thought Meester was a wannabee and was pleasantly surprised at her sweet and real performance. Hedland was good but his pants weren't tight enough to be really cowboy sexy. I wish somehow it was made clearer who the background musicians and actors were- they deserve more credit than they were given- particularly the 'guys' in Kantor's band. I thought Paltrow's assistant in the movie looked interesting and found out she's a great singer songwriter herself.I wish I could figure out who the rest of the cast were and look them up
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
plagiarism
I watched original Pelham 123 today and the criminals went by color coded names....it is blatantly not Quinton's idea. I'm just saying he could have given the original writer credit. I have a problem with him anyway, All he does is make movies that are parts of other movies he saw growing up...good entertainment, but not brilliant like some say. For whatever reason, people obviously enjoyed his work, but seriously I haven't liked anything since Pulp Fiction. The violence gets old and the actors get campy and he gets more demented looking every year. Maybe he would have been a better editor than director...I wish he'd come up with something original and different.
The Aviator (2004)
Worst movie I've ever seen
I am blown away by people's fascination with this movie. I have tried several times to watch it. It is boring boring boring...I just can't keep watching it. It's like watching paint dry. I don't know what it is...I like the actors and enjoy watching a few parts,(like Hepburn scenes), but I could care less about the story and never become involved in it. Besides they left out so much and never really showed what a seedy character and womanizer he was. When I first heard they made this movie I wondered why anyone would want to watch a story about a nutcase billionaire and his escapades. I mean like, I hate movies where I already know the ending. So I guess I was prejudiced from the start. Hughes was brilliant in many ways , but he was also a self indulgent bore who racist and paranoid of communism and ruined a good many people's lives in Hollywood because of it. I hate the way Hollywood romanticizes these real life characters and makes them something they are not. I also don't see where Decaprio did such an "awesome" job. He was too young for one thing.
Because I Said So (2007)
Diane Keaton
I have loved her performances for along time but I have been getting really sick of older stars doing performances that are not a stretch for them and are always the same. It is not entertaining after awhile. I can't remember where it started,(First Wives Club?) or the one with the witches(Practical Magic), but I am getting really sick of the so called 'spontaneous ' dance scenes where everybody is so hysterically happy and free. When I think of the movies she could be doing that would be meaningful and useful, it makes me sad. It reminds me of Jane Fonda in Mother in law....is this what is happening to our former great actresses? Is this all the roles they can get?? Maybe it's the modern version of Bette Davis humiliating herself in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. The sad part is I don't think it's about the money...it's about sadly needing the attention and wanting to work, so they might as well post a "WILL DO ANYTHING" sign on their forehead. Come to think of it, that's what this is.
American Dreamer (1984)
excellent movie
I saw this movie on t.v one day and I couldn't believe how wonderful JoBeth was in it. This movie is one of my favorites. I particularly love the scene under the table at the embassy dinner. It's too bad we never got to see more of her in comedy roles. Truly charming character. The timing is perfect and the other characters also hilarious. Very good light entertainment. I have probably watched it a dozen times over the years. It is comedy as well as being truly romantic to me. My favorite romances are when a guy is charmed by the personality of the girl, instead of swept away by her looks etc...like in Blowout where Travolta is listening the girl talk int he restaurant....he is completely taken with how sweet and charming she is.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
What was the last line??
I think he says:"There you go,sweetheart" after he buttons the shirt. There is an argument about this. What a beautiful movie...I have watched it 3 times now and I love it more and catch more subtleties every time. I think it's wonderful acting. The story speaks of people who through their inner demons cannot allow themselves an emotional life. I have known people like this in many situations...afraid to love
and afraid to be themselves. It goes way beyond being gay or not being gay, it's about human nature. I think about really 'macho guys I have known...acting gruff and rough all the time and never showing a real emotion. It is all a cover-up for appearing weak to anyone else.
Monster's Ball (2001)
One of my favorite movies
I hear a lot of people say how 'slow' the movie seems....I think they are missing out that this is intentional to show the deadness felt inside by the characters. I loved the scene where the horrible racist father is taken to the nursing home and handed over to the care of an all black staff- a fate worse than death to him. I didn't understand the sex scenes intensity until I read a review here- that said it was about emotion release. I realized then that it was another step in rejecting what his father stood for- at that point it was an act of defiance and he gave himself over entirely to it. I thought it was brilliant and made me think of how we perform sex for many different reasons. I think she also was finding some kind of defiance in that she wanted to 'live' again after the death of husband and son. Or some kind of punishment I haven't decided yet. Then the final scenes come..the newly fixed up house and the possibility that there will soon be laughter and love and caring within these same walls that housed so much hate. WHen she is sitting on the steps and looks over at the graves- to me it says she is tired of death and hate and she wants to live again. I think she realizes his entire journey and why he was with her...but that it was a good thing.
