They/Them (2022)
The Location IS Scenic, at Least....
Really Blumhouse? I watched the trainwreck of a movie out of curiosity AND because I'm running out of things to watch, even on streaming!
Here's the deal, it's derivative, tropey and dopey. The location is very pretty, and I liked the cinematography of the woodland / lake establishing and set up shot. After that, FEH!
Watch "Sleepaway Camp" for better thrills and a stronger LGBTQ story through line.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
This is a corndog of a film
Some people like corndogs; I'm not a fan. Over the years I've enjoyed the MCU films - some more than others - and I really wanted to like this one, too. NOPE. It was gaudy, messy, noisy and really, really long and pointless. I did, however, enjoy the soundtrack and Chris Helmworth's backside. Sadly, Disney has ruined the MCU and regrettably I'll never see DeadPool again.
Unless he's wearing Mouskaears and bandishing a Elsa bubblewand. So.... enjoy the corndogs, I guess?
Underworld (1985)
This Could be SO much better, IF...
They remade this with a decent budget, Clive Barker in charge like he needs to be and absolute NO 80's nostalgia. Are you out there, Mr. Barker? This is a very good story in need of decent film treatment.
(And yes, it does have a lot in common with Nightbreed, but Barker does like his labyrinths, dreamscapes and monsters without and within; call it style).
PS: I'm an 80's chick, too! But WAYYYYY to much Synth music-bleached denim-terrible eyemake-up and foofy hair for even ME! Once is enough.
Alien Predator (1986)
Great new candidate for Joe Bob's Drive In?
Oh sooooo very 80's cheese. Because prior reviewer covered the film quite thoroughly, allow me to add: Scooby-Doo Fu + The Thing Fu + Alien Fu + Duel Fu + European Vacation Fu + John Hughes Fu + puppets = Alien Predator aka The Falling.
I probably missed a few derivative 80s horror/SiFi rip offs, but you get the drift. Something for everyone.... or maybe not.
Just glad WE didn't rent an RV when we went to Spain.
White Sky (2021)
At least the woods are scenic...
Meh. Not the worst campers run through chased by whatever, but not great either.
The cast is good, the premise is interesting and production quality great. However the story packs the punch of boxing cats.
This is a film you watch when you run out of good stuff on your watch list.
Victoria's Exorcism (2014)
Exorcism: The Fallen Flat (or "Your mother sews socks in Hell"
Wow. This film is all kinds of awful.
#1 The storyline checked all the exorcism movie ever made with a big old Sharpie marker.
#2 The effects were just sad.
#3 Cinematography uninspired. (Who does an exorcism in an athletic field? Really???)
#4 The acting by the ensemble was a little theater caliber at best -- mostly it's not "at best."'
I'd like to say the Devil made them make this film, but even Satan has standards.
Yeo-gok-seong (2018)
Impressive- East meets West: We're Not So Different
Timing is everything. I recently re-watched Black Sunday on Shudder and was struck with how that film inspired The Wrath.
What impressed me the most is how Brava's basic story line endures and how nimbly it successfully crosses cultural lines. Big fan of Asian horror and I'm aware of the myriad of cultural nuances which was why a comparison of Black Sunday/The Wrath home.
The Wrath was exceptionally well executed, wonderful atmospheric creepiness and a few good jump scares. Cinematography was beautiful and acting performances sincere and engaging. Yes, it's a bit "soapy", especially the minor characters (but don't fret, they'll suffer).
My only gripe is the conclusion was predictable, but it not a deal breaker. But I admit I'm a sucker for a vengeful ghost strot!
The Wrath is a satisfying watch and, yep, pair it with Black Sunday for a fun comparison if you got time. Totally worth the double feature.
Deddo sushi (2012)
Baka-ishious fun movie.
You say you like Javanese film? Like monsters and martial arts? Classic lowbrow Nihon game show humor your thing? And sushi? Do you like sushi? THIS is your film! It's cheesy, it's dubbed, awful CGI, it's over the top characters + a manfish. Something for everyone. Yes, it sounds awful but Dead Sushi is so much fun to watch you won't care. Grab a Cup Noodle, sit back and laugh - it's a terrific way to kill 90 minutes and forget a bad day! FYI - expect a bit of comedic full frontal, so not for kids.
Annie Live! (2021)
Thanks Again, NBC!
I love it when NBC delivers a Broadway musical to live TV! Annie was tons of fun and I loved the diverse casting. It amazed me how smoothly these productions go. Broadway is for everyone, folks; please don't get stuck type casting! Enjoy a great show you can share with the family.
My only gripe is too many stinking commercial breaks.
A Demon Within (2017)
Ugh
The only thing that qualifies this as a horror film is just how horrible a film it is! Slow, tropey, awful acting and plot holes galore. Never have I cared less for any of the characters in a film: even the tittular demon was a weiner! I feel bad for the cast and crew who likely hoped they might make money or film cred based on their time involved. Once you read the plot synopsis on line, you're all done and saved yourself 90 minutes or so. Like the review title says, "ugh".
Eloise (2016)
The Only Scary Part is the Lack of a Real Plot
Growing up in the shadow of Eloise I remember being so excited when they shot the film here. The asylum has a rich history and is a magnate for local urban legends and paranormal investigators. Great fodder for a modern ghost story, right? Not in the film Eloise. In spite of terrific things going for the location and history, Eloise manages to go thin on the plot, trots out one dimensional characters, one after the other, and cheats the viewer by presenting spooker tropes we've all seen done before -- and better elsewhere! Eloise gets major points for cinematic technique - the visuals and sound were excellent. But personally, I'd prefer to watch the crew from Ghost Hunters schlep around the remains Eloise Asylum for better "scare".
