More times that not, the movie doesn't do the book justice; this is a prime example.
First, I wish they would have followed the format of the book in that Eva is writing letters to Franklin. If they had used a voiceover of some of Eva's letters rather than the minutes long of songs, it would have better development of the characters.
I also hate that they left out Eva's reasonings behind having Celia & didn't show more of the relationship between Eva & Celia as compared to Eva & Kevin.
Finally, I wish the movie would've gone more in-depth into Eva's political views & conversations she had with Franklin & Kevin about them. It would've been a better understanding of Tilda Swinton's character than shown in the film. They also left out how often school shootings were discussed within the family which I believe Kevin purposely chose a bow & arrow not only because he's a skillful archer but mainly because it could destroy Eva's theory behind mass school shootings. Kevin was slapping his mother in the face by showing that school shootings are not only because of weak gun control policies as she so devoutly preached. In the book Kevin expressed his belief that Eva views herself to be better than her fellow Americans because of her politics & exposure to other cultures around the world; with this one Thursday, he was able to make everything his mother knew crumble around her in an instant.
