Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
It's going to take some time to digest
I think for me the first 10 or 15 minutes of Blade Runner was the only time I didn't feel like I was in a Blade Runner movie... I kind of felt it was going the direction of so many action films.. To my surprise, it quickly moves into hallowed Sci Fi territory with stunning cinematography and sound. The tech and imagination of the future is so gritty, yet felt just right compared to the original.
The reason for my title is that this is a long film. While almost wholly satisfying, it takes a while to get there.. The longer I'm away from the film, the more I appreciate it, because it is setting up everything for the plot. and possibly a sequel. The visuals will stay with me.. and that's a good thing.. If you are looking for a feel good movie, this probably won't be your cup of tea.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Good.. but unsatisfying
Like many other reviewers, I believe we are in this series because of the pedigree surrounding 'Breaking Bad.' While, some of the elements of that show are finally forming...it's taking a long time. Breaking Bad typically had a momentum that would take the series into the next year with breathless anticipation. Better Call Saul is missing that in general. While I think it would be some kind of monumental task to catch lightening in a bottle again, how about a little thunder? Let's move it along. Let's see Jimmy be Jimmy or Saul.. I even found myself missing episodes and catching up, and I don't remember ever doing that with BB.
Bosch (2014)
Great Streamer
Bosch is a really good show. I wasn't so sure about it when I watched the first season. Now, as we are finished with the 3rd season, I can say it's a show I really like. You will see a couple of recognizable faces, but for the most part the cast is fresh..which is nice too. They grow on you. If you haven't checked out Bosch...you have 3 seasons to watch.. Congratulations. Enjoy.
I Love Dick (2016)
Snoozer
Why is it that every writer thinks their lives are so compelling? In reality, they mostly hide behind their desks and computers dreaming of real stories. I Love Dick is a story about a couple of uber liberal writers from NY... should I go on? After seeing some of the positive reviews in different outlets I was going to really hang in there and give this one a go.. and maybe it picks up after two episodes, but I have better things to watch.. Good Luck.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Some sequels shouldn't happen
I know it's a cliché to say I don't often write reviews, but that's the case here. I saw the overwhelmingly positive ratings for this film, and I'm wondering if we live in some kind of altered state or these really are the days of Idiocracy. Without giving anything away, I can tell you I'd rather get a root canal with no anesthetic in Tijuana... Yeah, it's that horrible. I was skeptical about the first film, but it was surprising delight of a film. This version is every worn out, big battle, fake CGI, movie rolled together puked out like a college girl on Spring Break.
Goliath (2016)
Season 3 Please
While I'm not the biggest Amazon Prime fan, they do seem to be a lot more choosy about the TV shows and films they buy for their video members. Goliath, is an example of everything that is right about the online streaming format. It's an interesting and engaging show with EXCELLENT acting. Billy Bob, coming off his last awesome performance in Fargo and hits a home run with a role that he's perfectly suited for.. or he's just that talented and makes it look easy. Great show. Recommend. I've spun through it 3 times.
Patriot (2015)
Almost
This is one of those cool shows that has so much going for it. Like the main character, it's looking for something it can't find. The acting is wholly believable, and some of the bit characters are really excellent. I give kudos to the lady who plays the physical therapist.. truly awesome and annoying all in the same breath. I can recommend this show and even if it doesn't quite deliver for me.. there is always more to come hopefully. In a world of garbage series, this has something and worth a watch or a binge.. Thank you.
