The Surge (2017)
Does making a game hard is considered a success?
I was very excited to start this game as first 30 mins I was really enjoying. However, it all ended there.
To my surprise, I found the enemies will respawn if you die or go back to the Medbay area. When you die, you will respawn far away from the spot to Medbay and will have to either sprint through all respawned enemies or fight all the respawned enemies to the boss. This is very annoying. The boss battles are very unfair. You are supposed to figure out mechanics that do not make sense. For example, in the first boss battle, how a player is supposed to figure out the meaning of orange bar filling up? To me it looked like the boss was gaining life with my weapons strike and I kept on switching weapons with no success. The boss battles are incredibly hard, sometimes with just one or two blows you die. You will also lose your collectibles when you die like the Dark Souls game, but to make it harder than Dark souls, here there is a time limit to collect tech scraps you dropped.
I understand making a game hard makes the game challenging and rewarding. But this game tried to copy Dark Souls, Lord of Fallen and failed. A game can be made hard with meaningful context. But this game has just made it unplayable and annoying in many aspects.
