Into the Dark: Pilgrim (2019)
Incredibly dumb
By far the worst of any episodes I've seen. Skip this one and literally watch any other Into the Dark episodes. I'm shocked to see any positive ratings. This lacked any substance, while trying to take a moral high ground, while suddenly trying to be darkly funny, then fake gory just a total mess. Its literally one of the worst things I've ever seen.
Blow the Man Down (2019)
"A lot of people underestimate young women. That's why they can get away with a lot"
If you're looking for an original movie, with an unoriginal plot, watch this. The story itself is pretty common; a random event of chance leads the otherwise innocent protagonists into a guiltier and deeper hole as the movie progresses.
Although straightforward, the director does an excellent job of placing the viewer into the heart of the town with beautiful cinematography and sporadic POV camera work. You have a sense that you are a member of this rural Maine community, where everyone knows everyone and the gender roles are seemingly switched. The men perform the menial tasks of every day life (mainly fishing) while the women call the shots, quite literally.
While this could easily be portrayed as a feminist hit piece, there is a whimsical aspect of the score that just makes you smile a bit as a group of 70(ish) year old women walk around the town like Liotta and De Niro. Don't get too wrapped up in the procedural aspect of the 'whodunit' and why plot, as it's more of a story about the roots of the town and the grapple for power rather than a mystery.
Its a quick hitter after the first 10 minutes. Give it a shot. 8/10.
