Secret in Their Eyes (2015)
Nothing about this story adds up
You always hear that you should only write about what you know. Obviously Billy Ray knows nothing about the criminal justice system. There are federal crimes and there are state crimes. Murder is 100% only a state crime, unless it's some part of a RICO conspiracy. Why would the FBI be doing surveillance on a mosque in order to stop a potential terrorist attack out of a state district attorney's office? Is the FBI L.A. field office so packed that they're renting out space? Why would they even remotely be working together? It doesn't happen. FBI works with the U.S. Attorney's Office, and even then they don't work INSIDE the office. Until the case is ready to be prosecuted, they just work out of their own office. From trying to find the perp at a Dodger's game (and incredibly successfully being able to do so in a sea of 56,000 people), to allowing the FBI agent/Proscecutor played by Julia Roberts to completely contaminate the crime scene, to beating up the perp after he finally gives you a confession. Ugh, the bad writing goes on and on. Please, Mr. Ray, hire a consultant next time so your story will have a remote ring of truth to it.
Pussy Kills (2017)
Just what it advertises to be
If you rented this film and you didn't like it, it's because you obviously seem to just randomly click on films. If you see a poster where there is a shot of the main character's rear and it has a title like "Pussy Kills," you know just what you're getting. It's not Shakespeare, it's just supposed to be fun. This film is just that.
Those crying that there's no actual nudity really need to get a life. First, if you just want to see sex and nudity, there is plenty of websites for that. Second, don't blame the filmmakers when sites like Amazon and iTunes will not play movies that contain "too much" sex and nudity (whatever that means). So blame censorship and not the filmmakers. Third, the main actress is hot in that outfit, and that should suffice for your pre-teen needs.
All Girls Weekend (2016)
A really enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half
I met the director at an event, and she asked me to watch the film on Amazon Prime and write a review to undo so many trolls on here. After reading the reviews on this page, I see exactly what she means. People who enjoy the film just watch it, and people who have nothing better to do with their time, feel the need to trash other people's hard work. For starters, this is a low-budget, independent film and should be compared to other similar projects. I feel sometimes like there should be a separate section for independent films on these film websites so people can know the difference. I watch films for their story. When I saw that it was about 5 women in the woods, I rolled my eyes thinking I've seen this before a million times. But I was pleasantly surprised, that it was a very different film. It's not some guy with a machete, it's something very unique and I really appreciated that. There's very little that hasn't been done in horror. I also really enjoyed the acting, which is not always the case in these lower budget films. It reminded me a little of The Descent, with the all-female cast, but obviously on a much lower budget.
The Promise (2016)
Don't listen to all the bad ratings!
I just saw this movie at the Atlanta Film Festival and can't believe all the negative reviews that the film has on IMDb. Were they watching something else? I found it very moving and very entertaining. Maybe not a 9, but considering all the fake ratings, I feel like I need to bump up the average. When I saw that it was over 2 hours, I rolled my eyes, but I was pleasantly surprised about how much it kept my attention and I was often on the edge of my seat. What was most shocking of all is the fact that I had never heard this genocide had ever happened. It's been buried in history, and I'm glad that the filmmakers decided to bring this to light. I met an Armenian woman at the screening, and she was in tears about how glad she was that the story was finally being told. The film is not perfect, and I have some issues with the love story behind it, but the overall historical perspective makes this movie a must-see. It'll open your eyes, especially in these troubled political times.
The Morningside Monster (2014)
Very enjoyable indie horror/thriller flick
I just saw this film at a local screening in Atlanta and really enjoyed it. I met the director and some of the actors, and the spoke about all the trials and tribulations they had when making the film. Considering the budget, etc., I was highly entertained. And it had a really great twist ending that I really did not see coming at all. The fact that some people don't get what actually happens in the film is laughable. The main actor was really good, like well above the acting of most indie flicks I watch. I guess there's one born every day.
