Moneyboys (2021)
Serious and sad, slow and touching, beautiful cinematography
The film was wonderful to watch. It covers the topic of male prostitution in Taiwan/China, and the trauma that many gay/bisexual/MSM men face in society. A large part of this is due to the familial pressure to marry and have children, which is something many young people in Taiwan and China may relate to.
The film was deliberately slow paced. It relied on body language, situational context and reading between the lines. The story was dark, impactful and meaningful. The film shines light on the greater societal issues of sexualization, homophobia, and poverty. Not an easy topic to explore.
The cinematography was simple and beautiful.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Truly spectactular, a once in a lifetime movie experience.
I have watched the movie 3 times now and have enjoyed every experience. A completely frenzied, chaotic take on comedy, action, sci-fi and drama.
Fantastic acting by all three leads.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
so disappointing
Loved Dr Strange 1 and Wanda as a character. This movie could have been so much better, but was garbage.
It felt like it was put together by high school students, randomly clipping scenes so dialogue felt disjointed and rushed. Wanda was turned into a boring typical villain for no reason. She had so much more potential.
Big disappointment. Everything Everywhere All At Once is how you do a multiverse well.
Baburu (2022)
Fantastic animation, some great ideas, but the plot was lacklustre
Truly fantastic animation, beautiful drawings of characters and interesting view points of characters doing parkour etc. Animation is a 10/10
The story had some interesting characteristics that could have been used better to make the movie fantastic: parkour, dystopian/abandoned Tokyo that is overgrown and flooded, attack of the bubbles, etc. Had the story been properly thought out and explained, while cutting the useless stuff like the mermaid references, the movie could have been much better.
Instead, we have a parkour movie in an abandoned Tokyo that is consumed by gravity altering bubbles, the bubbles seem to have some unknown goal against humanity. We get a bubble mermaid girl who goes from acting like a feral cat to developing a personality all of a sudden. The magically mermaid bubble girl falls in love with the shy cool talented boy, and then the other bubbles get mad and try to destroy whats left of Tokyo. The day is saved when magic bubble mermaid girl embraces shy cool talented boy and then dissolves into foam, again referencing the little mermaid story that was mentioned in the movie multiple times. What did the bubbles want? No clue. Were the bubbles alive? It seems so, but we're not sure. Is magical bubble mermaid girl actually a mermaid? I think not.
Great animation, cool ideas, but the plot and characters were half baked. Was still nice to watch. Decent attempt by Netflix.
Searching (2018)
Predictable plot and gimmicky method of storytelling.
99% of the movie is through a computer screen, which is fine I guess, but I think it limited a lot of what the movie could have done better.
Plot was simple. A bit of a twist at the end. Overall I didn't like it that much.
The acting of the father was good but a little intense/too dramatic in some scenes.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Disappointingly simple. Slow, childish, not much happens throughout the series.
I really looked forward to the Mandalorian. I enjoyed the first two episodes, but quickly realized that the plot evolves at a painfully slow pace. The show's dialogue is very simple and minimal.
He rescues baby Yoda and continues planet hopping while running away from bad guys for three or four episodes. It is not surprising what happens. The side characters are mostly pathetic and comically stupid.
Baby Yoda is a cute bundle of joy though. I always enjoy seeing him do his thing. Other than that, this show has been a big letdown. I hope it will get better.
